or their HR dept is rewording something (wouldn't be the first time). These guys are actually called RF engineers. At least they are in Telecom circles. It's like calling a software engineer a "Cobol" engineer.
Okay, I have to change my password every 10 days. But wait, I only have 2 eyes. Retinal scans are out. Hmm, 10 fingers. That works for now until some other security know it all comes along and says it needs to be 20. Ok, now I have to take my shoes off to meet the requirement. Please. And I can't remember was it the left foot or right foot and third toe. At some point, this is all unmanageable. It already is. Lets please stop it now. I have NEVER in 20 years had any of my passwords hacked. Why? I am likely too under the radar for most hackers and maybe that's what security experts need to teach. Until then, just turn off the password checking.
Likely, the DSi will out sell the iPhone 3g. Easily. The price point is just much better and I'd give my kid a DSi long before an iPhone. So, apps have a much wider audience than the 2 for one you are looking at. I for one, am replacing my DS with one.
Highly threaded multicore processors ala T2000/T5220. These are a godsend to us in Telecom and I can only imagine IBM killing it. Sun is finally innovating again and has some really great technology in their OS. I have recently moved to a multicore processor project using embedded MIPS chips and been told in no uncertain terms not to count on Linux to share the load among the 12+ cores they have. After coming off T2000/T5220s I was shocked. Ugh, give me Solaris back.
These issues came about after the 8 years of Republican control. Starting with Barney Frank assuming control of the Banking Committee. Since he is a Democrat, it is obvious who was in control of Congress. And lest we forget, Congress has a lower approval rating now than Bush does.
I run Linux at work and do gaming at home. Macros are a life saver no matter wither I am doing perl/Python/C++, managing servers or running around in LOTRO. The G15 status is great at work for monitoring ram and processor taxing (I tend to have way too many windows open) so I know when I need to shut a few things down. Basically, these keyboards have the best touch and macros to boot. I own three of the old style including one that is still in the box (just in case). Plus, I have a G11 on my second office machine (running Open Solaris).
Sun is innovating again and I like it. Not only ZFS but I like the packaging system all around. I have found that both Opensolaris and Linux work well and I simply use both but here is the real kicker for me, I can also get Studio 12. Now gcc is OK but that is about it. I really like having a real compiler and IDE. BTW, gcc is included in the release and Studio 12 is an extra package but it is well worth it. Also, for you Linux fans (includes me as I like both), Studio 12 is available for Linux.
Well, Ill say I have been running Solaris since the 3/80. Sun support has never sucked and I have worked several problems with them. We also use Red Hat and the unfortunate thing is that Red Hat refuses to make changes to Red Hat 5 when the kernel is fixed in Red Hat 6 (unreleased). They simply will not back port. No, I have made a significant amount of use of Sun support over the years and have yet to find problems that I "stump" them on. Do I end up in back line support talking directly to engineers who wrote the stuff. Yes. But I have yet to get a Linux Kernel engineer on the phone at 3AM. Oh, and I was extremely impressed over the 4th of July weekend when a lot of us (System Admins) were upgrading our servers and Sun was there. In fact, I know I got the A team as far as support goes. That is just the way Sun rolls. At least that has been my experience since 1987.
and it doesn't make it any more real. (I work at a major telecom equipement vendor.) This is a marketing guy trying to make carrier's feel good about charging for something that everyone gets now for free. If they can just figure out a way to get a piece of every free technology they'd do it. This is just the same BS different day. WiFi will be replaced when the next FREE thing comes along. Not before. T-Mobile still is trying to get UMA off the ground. Wifi is not in danger no matter how many Telecom marketing guru's think it is.
This is absolutely the first thing I thought of. Come on. after all the Geek Squad porn stories, we are gonna believe that this "contractor" is just gonna delete this information. Yeah, right
Yes, the lockout was a stupid thing. I still own two scanners that were sold pre-lock. The analog spectrum now only sends out digital data now so it is hardly worth listening too. And what I always found interesting was that the 49Mhz spectrum was never locked out and at the time, most cordless phones and baby monitors were using this frequency. As such, a decent high placed antenna would pick up stuff for miles around. I believe baby monitors still sit there. Its time to unlock scanners.
Um, Sun was working and is working with Apple today. A friend of mine who works at Sun is looking for a new laptop. There are 3 offered. 1 Toshiba, and 2 Apple Macs. My friends and I were trying to convince him to go for the Mac. Problem is he has a lot of Solaris Demo's to give and the Mac is not quite as Solaris friendly.
Sorry, but I still believe in B-Trees, ISAM files, fseek(), ftell() and text configuration files. Every time something new comes out somebody calls the old thing dead. I think a huge # of uses of databases could be handled by the techniques previously mentioned but we hit up Mysql causes its easiest to get going. Will this ever end? This is one of the main reasons I see for people getting that shiny new 3.2Ghz system and seeing that it isn't really that much faster than the 200Mhz Pentium. Lemmings use the newest ideas which are actually take more computing power to use but less brain power to implement. Not actually sure on this technique but I bet if I dig I'll find it.
I think the author of the article needs to reread what he wrote. He is the one thinking that Solaris is set to take on Linux. I believe that is not correct nor do I believe that it is Sun's direction. In several key places in the article, they are offering Solaris as an "alternative" to Linux. Sun offers Linux and Windows on their servers. I did not read anywhere that they are setting up to take on Linux directly and I am betting they hope to do things as well as Linux has done them. They are way too late to take on Linux.
Like anonymity, no record retention, agreement not to tap or packet inspect ever? At least a guarantee to work with the EFF before ever working with the government. Why can't it be the whole package? I might see it then.
And I would do RAID why? I only use JBODs with ZFS. I find it very strange to use RAID5 arrays with ZFS. We have basically replaced all our RAID5's with ZFS or left them entirely UFS. For most uses, a partition on the disk (usaully just one for the entire drive) is used as the vdev. Thus adding drives is the way to expand a pool.
A couple.
1) ZFS does not require a format. It takes me around 2 seconds to create a pool on a raid disk. Also true on a 500G hard drive.
2) ZFS pools (or directories/partitions if you will) can span multiple drives.
3) ZFS pools can have volumes (or drives) added to them at will. This means that if I run out of space in my music folder, I can add storage to it by adding another drive and adding it to the pool where my music folder is.
Hope that helps

Oh man, can I run the original Apple II version of Castle Wolfenstien?

Duke Nukem Forever will release on Dec 21, 2012. Look up the date. I am sure you will agree with me.

Ah, but lets not forget about NFS.

So that's why Sun created ZFS. Doesn't even begin to fill up a Zetabyte file system.

Except they are likely to move, as even Linus has hinted at and one of the reasons he may reconsider, GPL3.
Actually, Sun is working on the Linux port. I would not worry about it

ZFS came out in Solaris 10 Update 2. (Sun is days away from releasing update 4.) It is currently bootable in OpenSolaris.
