Java and C# are so similar it should no teven matter. Sure, somethings are no tthe same, but in a recent class I took regarding Object Oriented programming, there's not much of difference. We took the SAME code, first written in Java and moved it into Visual C#, made a couple of SMALL tweaks and it compiled AND ran.
With that said, IT is always changing. When I came into it 10 years ago, there was a mainframe, a operations department, programers, a systems programmer and PC/Network support. Much of the same support structure is still there, except now the Systems Programer position is now a System Administrator. Now, operations doesn't exist anymore. IT changed. It will change in the future. IT will always be there because there will always be technical things that the people running the show don't want to do.
I applaud them for this and this is soemthing that's been needed. Look I want to work on my program, my server, my web server or some other thing. I don't want to have to dick with things like getting the frickin hardware to work. Ubuntu has made great strides in this arena. Also, they are absolutley correct in saying the IRC help channel should be absolutely helpful. Telling someone to RTFM or to just google it isn't a solution.
There's a few things where Nokia missed the boat on this one. First:
MEMORY
64 MB is a paltry set of memory for Linux. Would have been much better with 128 MB of ram. There's also not enough rootfs space either. Notice ye hackers doing things like Swap on the RS-MMC....I don't have to do that on my Pocket PC!
RS-MMC
RS-MMC??? I can't really bitch that it's not standard because it is (follows MMC) but SD or even transflash would have been a way better choice. IN fact, here's what to do in the next iteration....integrate a MicroDrive or make SD the standard.
NO PIM APPS! Ok, I know, it's NOT supposed to be a PDA yet it looks very much like a PDA....so what is it?? They say it's a internet tablet. People want a PDA or a Pocket PC that has these screen specs! If they had PIM apps, it could replace a PDA for most people. The open source ones are coming, but I need to sync my calendar TODAY.....not in a year!
ANEMIC CPU! You could have tried the Xscale PXA270. It's about twice as fast.
That said, I still would love to have one of these to hack around with. I have been think about it for a LONG time. Since CompUSA didn't do what I thought they were going to do (Thought they were going to give me a gift card, they instead upgraded me to a HP iPAQ hx2495), I will have to wait a while.
Not ready for the market? Nokia must have thought it was and Linux geeks are not the only ones buying these things. For light websurfing, the current configuration DOES work, but it get's slow really quick.
Thinkpads before and after the Lenovo purchase are every bit as good as the one when they were called IBM ThinkPads. In fact, they have bene made by Lenovo for many years now. Only way they may be loosing market share is fear of loosing support.
We have a similar issue here. Technically, since I work for a state school, this post on Slashdot can be asked for under FOIA just because the packets went over thier network. This is a extreme lack of understanding on how things on a network works. It's not so simple. The college can't keep every bit that flys into the school via the internet....it would be impossible. I post on Slashdot from work because Slashdot covers IT and sometimes I get good info (ok probably 10 percent content 90 percent junk....but I digress). Why would anyone ask for this under FOIA is beyond me, but technically they CAN ask for it! Anyone can also ask for MY address in phone number as well....in my opinion, that's crap!
They have had this for sometime now on mainframes. The biggest reason this is is alot of mainframes for a long time did not even have floating point processors! They had a separate chip to do any encryption. The application of it in this case IS new and it looks like, to me, that the OS has to have a driver for the chip and will have to be written such that it can decrypt the data on the fly. No easy task.
I already predicted this 2 seconds after Intel macs were announced. Apple will continue to make Macs but they will be similar to what Alienware was....a boutique hardware vendor who happens to also make great software.
Mine is a Motorola e815 and it definitely won't last as long a smost people would want. I will admit, I probably exagerated, but if listening to music and taking the occasional phone call it would probably only last a few hours at best. Add a Hard Disk or a memory card....it will last less time......
For apple to make a true iPod Phone, the battery would have to last at least as long as a regular iPod.
I can't believe that they'd even have a system capable of doing this. The kind of system they need would have to be massivce and working for a government entity myself I can't even believe that they'd get this kind of deal through congress.....on the otherhand most of congress are imbeciles so i gues sit could be possible.
The problem is that battery's won't keep up with both devices. My Cellphone can last 3-4 days with moderate usage (although if I do mobile web on it, the battery usage goes up). If I used it as a MP3 Player which I can already do, the battery would crap out in an hour...
To truely integrate a iPod and a cellphone, it would have to be as large as my last analog only cell phone which was quite large (I lived for a while without a phone). The reason is for the battery. The biggest thing holding a converged mp3 player and cell phone back is the battery. Only fuel cell tech or an advancement in bettery technology will drive this.
The problem isn't the DVD's. It's a few things....
Hollywood has been turning crap movie after crap movie out every year. What they don't realize is we can sometimes get equivalent stuff that may even be better. Examples are the very well done Star Wars and Star Trek fan flics we've been able to download for free. Hllywood wants to make easy movies and they are not challenging themselves or the screenwriters any more. Considering that of all the summer block busters in the last few years we have seen a tonne of sequals or rehashings....oneexample is Peter Jackson's stinker King Kong.
Why why WHY do you have to charge us 6 bucks for about 80 cents worth of pop? I can easily pay almost as much as a amusement park ticket if I get each person in the group outfitted with a popcorn and a drink. It's GOD awful expensive to go to a full price theater. I remember seeing FIRST run movies for a buck back in the day. I also remember theaters not charging 5 bucks for a box of Snocaps. They want more people to come to the theater, then they shoul dlower thier prices. Maybe we need to go back to only have 1 or 2 theaters. Maybe the movie megaplex wasn't such a good idea....
I may be wrong, but I thought the U2 iPod was blank like any iPod is when shipped. I thought you just got a card in the box that you plugged in and got to download the whole shebang from iTMS??
The regulation is so that these frequencies and services stay usable. Anyone has free access to airwaves that they arelicensed for. Get a ham license and you have more frequencies then about 90 precent of people out there. The FCC is doign a great job in my opinion. The FCC's regs are the reason my cell and my wifi are workign as well as they are.
Hmm...I have never heard a blackberry make clicky click noises unless I was right beside or in front of the user. Same thing goes with the vibe of a crackberry. I have heard the cliky clik of a laptop keybaord, but honestly if that bothers you when your presenting or being presented to, then go lock yourself in a dark room. People are just too damn sensative today.
Because you THOUGHT the subject would be intresting and then the presenter drones on and on about this inane thing or another inane thing that may or may not be relevant to the subject at hand. Another reason is that you are required to be there....
I think that many presenters have forgotten that if they WANT our attention, they must earn it. Keep speeches and presentations SHORT! Anything over 20 minutes is overkill in my opinion unless your doing a demonstration. Ultimately, one can only be bothered by what others do if the let themselves be bothered. Too many times in this day and age people don't simply learn how to mind thier own business. If my PDA or phone is silent while I work with it, then why is it a distraction? Same goes with a laptop. If you want to avoid the picket fenc deal, then I would suggest a change....either get rid of tables at the presentation or design them such that the laptops can be used with out distracting the presenter.
Whoops....I cut my finger with my knife....now knives should be made so they can't cut through my skin therefore making all knives useless....and now you see the fallacy in this.....
This is not product liability....it's just people being stupid.

"It works exactly like dual-booting your PC"
Which I don't like either. Thanks but no thanks.
I don't want to play Doom or any other game on my MP3 player. I just want to listen to music. If it's OGG or MP3 I don't care.
I woudl be crippling my iPod by using rockbox. It would take away video from my 5th gen. Listening to OGGS ain't with that!

Beavis and Butthead jumped the shark WELL before the movie. In fact, the movie largely SUCKED.
The web will be useless tomorrow. Maybe that's a good thing? Pulling the trigger a little early eh Taco??
The problem isn't the DVD's. It's a few things....

This sounds great....except when your connection drops....

There's going to be a 700p running Palm....care to try again??
How about the same reason we can blame Microsoft for breaking legacy apps between upgrades?? Palm's no different.
