SAY IT WITH ME: NOT EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO USE LINUX IS A FUCKING DEVELOPER!!!!
Now, now that I have earned my > tag, onward!
There are tons of people who DON'T know how to write programs who want to use a OS that is different then Windows and is NOT Windows and is BETTER then Windows. They have every right to complain when things are not as they should be....they are users. The Non-Technical user needs to have thier needs addressed. Thankfully, there are distros that aren't like you!
Hmmm....you have been working on Linux for 16 years huh? Maybe you have not had a problem BECAUSE YOU'VE BEEN WORKING ON IT FOR 16 years!
No RPM hell? You must either not use it, or work arou d it constantly. If you try todo the best thing (stay within your package mannager be it apt or yum or whatever), EVEN THEN there's been RPM hell. I had to actually remove packages and re-install them with yum because the dependencies were all screwed up. RPM hell happens.
Great....the LSB handles config issues.....Now try to get all distros to use it properly.
Finally, why is there so many dependencies on some things?? I have had some packages with dependencies that don't make a lick of sense.
Next time, take a step back from your leetness and look at it as someone who wants a alternative to Windows but doesn't have a CIS degree. The distro needs ot be easy to use. Ubuntu and Fedora have made great strides. It stillneeds to be better.
Not ony should a 63 year old tech not have to do this....any tech should not have to do this. Call centers are TERRIBLE support.....period when they are managed like this. The idea of support is to support people. If you have to take 2 hours to do it then you do. It should have never boiled down to something like that. Calls by hour is something that a telemarketer or a person dolling out travel info should be able to do.....techs should be able to help people and it should not matter how many calls you take. What should matter is the quality.
Yes but new users don't want to have to go to the stanton finley page just so they can do that. If it's not as functional or MORE functional then Windows from the get go, then they are going to keep buying the Microsoft candy.
No, it does not do anything of the sort. It just stops me from using Data that I have been carrying with me for YEARS. Namely, I don't want to reencode ALL of my CD's into OGG. OGG is nice and I use it when and where I want to, but because MP3 is supported by nearly everything on the planet, it's what I use.
Java is good. Sun's Java is better then any of the open equivalents (by equivalents I am talking about Open Java JVM's....). PHP is good because of what it can do for you and it's also good cuz it's free. Have not looked at Ruby or Python yet but I do use software based on it. Just because I choose to use Sun's Java does not mean I discount the rest of the open stuff.
Microsoft, Apple and other OS's all manage to pay Thompson to use and give away MP3 codecs. Why can't a Linux distro??
Microsoft manages to write the kernel for Windows yet Nvidia and others can write DRIVERS.
I am tired of the OSS zealots telling me what can and cannot be done in a Linux distro. This is why I like my Mac ALMOST as much as Linux and in some case mroe then I like Linux. I just want to get work done....I don't want to have to hunt down packages so I can play my mp3's or dvd's!
This man has balls! I am really surprised the Slashdot drones have not modded this down. You are of course correct. I am TIRED of installing everything including a OS, a browser and a office suite, yet I still have to install a bunch of crap just so I can play a MP3. I am going to be REAL intrested in Freespire.
This is a true statement. Other then EVDO, I have no alternative but Time Warner for high speed. I am too far from the AT&T dc for DSL. I have been too far sicne I can remember.....
If net nutrality starts to slip away, then it's NOT just Google that they will go after. Next will be Microsoft or Yahoo. Next?? Podshow?? It's one of them there slippery slope things....once we start to go down it, we will continue to pay more and more until it's just not feasible to do business on the internet. Net Nutrality is needed....for the good of ALL companies....even AT&T....
This may or may not be true, but personally, I think this may all stem from AT&T being pissed that Google does not buy bandwidth from them.
OK....first off....she's your MOM. You owe her alot. Second, Linux....WTF were you thinking?? I know I can use it and you know you can use it but your Mom?? Sorry.....
Third, the first thing I would have done was purchase some computer classes at the local CompUSA for her. She's your MOM! Be nice to her....
Newbies are going to want to have the most popular thing....regardless of how sucky it is. Look how VHS won over Betamax. Betamax was a better format however VHS was good enough. For 90 percent of the people, Windows IS good enough.
The cores have almost NOTHING to do with the throughput on a mainframe. It's all the channel controllers. Instead of dedicating CPU power to communicate with the outside world it's all handled by the controllers themselves. In a way, channels are paralell processing in 1989....dedicated processors for the I/O, math co and general purpose. Mainframes still rock my world.....wish we had one.
Not all stores are equal, however the store I shop at seems too....my router was tanking big time and I needed a new one. They are remodeling the electronics dept. to make room for that BTO counter....ALL of the frickin routers were in the back. Um....hey....wallyworld manager....I want to give you money tonight not tomorrow am!:P
This is a good thing and I don't know why it has not been done already. I would purchase it in a heartbeat. Tivo's are better then the Scientific Atlanta DVR's. It's ALMOST like the iPod except noone really has a ready made DVR that's better.
Um, GTA:San Andreas was already rated M wasn't it?? My thinking was that they pulled it off the shelves to remove the content so they could retain the M. GTA was never MEANT for teens.
No room for enthusiast driven enterprises?? Hmm....Alienware and Voodoo are that way. Yes, Alienware got bought, but I can still get one. Gaming oriented PC's ARE enthusiast based and lots of companies sell them. 99 percent of the PC's out there are ok for alot of games except the newest of the new games.
SGI could have done some great things (release the source of IRIX??)but didn't.
I know plenty of people who work for Walmart who have NO complaints. The "stories" I have seen I have not seen PROOF! It may be ONE store that has an issue. You CAN'T paint the whole company as bad just because one store manager is an asshole.
I have bought plenty of stuff from walmart and sams and had it last and last. What in heck are you doing to your printers to kill them in a year?? I have a Simpletech USB drive I bought many years ago that still works fine. I have many other things I have bought there: clothes, a graphics card, a camera and many other things that are still going strong long after I thought they would. If you take care of your things, then they will last. If you just beat em around, well...to each his own.
Only thing I really do have a problem with Walmart and it's NOT just Walmart....other stores have this too...many stores have merchandise that's only available there and I am not talking about store brands. I bought a luggage set at Walmart. It's American Tourister. It's good stuff. However, one of my pieces was stolen. I called up American Tourister and asked if I could purchase a replacement and they said it wasn't possible as that set was made ONLY for Walmart. So what am I to do? Buy a whole nother set I guess....luckily they ain't expensive.
And it's very negative too. Walmart is just A STORE! It happens to be the biggest store, but its no worse then when Kmart was much bigger then it is now. Hey...by the way....MOST stuff here in the states,,,,sold in Walmart or Target or wherever was probably made in China. Walmart did not pioneer that process.:P
I noticed some odd behavior after this update. Some pages had missing images. Clearing my cache fixed it. Not sure if it's the browser or a actual problem with the web sites. I only noticed a problem AFTER the update installed in the background AND went to the page. After restarting, I cleared cache and it's updated. One thing I wish would happen is that Linux distros would give us the choice of updating via the Firefox way or the Linux way (apt, yum or whatever).
I think you already said it, but Linux does not support everything out of the box. People should not have to download firmware from Intel to get their wireless to work. They should not have to tweak Xorg.conf files to get 3d acceleration. Now I KNOW the problems and WHY it is the way it is....but I don't have to agree with it. What is really needed for Linux to be come more popular is Open hardware specs....ones that leave wiggle room for custom chips, but require the interface to these chips to be the same. Anyone ever heard of using REAL hardware? SO much of today's hardware is entirely dependent on the driver for hardware operation. Back in the day, one could easily build a device that could communicate serially very easily and without having to have a OS driver. Sure, you may have had to have to code directly to the serial port but it was easy. Try making something at home that runs on USB today. Not nearly as easy.
Apple would never do this because of all of the BAD uses for it and by bad I mean illegal. Think what you want, but Bit Torrent gets labels a tool of pirates....regardless of the fact that you can use it for:
1. Legal downloads of content. 2. Legal downloads of Linux/BSD CD's.
I don't care how many good uses there are, Bit Torrent will always be labeled as a piracy tool.
This is simply not true. Oh sure, in some cases this happened, but you will find in alot of these cases that the area was ALREADY depressed. I have just as many times seen small stores flourish around Wal-Mart prvoding something taht Wal-Mart could not....high quality. In somie cases, I have sen Wal-Mart build a store out in the boondocks and all of a sudden there was a McDonalds, a Burger King, a Blockbuster and other stores and restaurants all popping up around the Supercenter. In places I have seen the town "decimated" by Wal-Mart it was the very owners who did the decimation. Sure, sometimes it was that they could not compete against Wal-Mart, but in some cases it was very poor business decisions made after Wal-Mart moved in. Wal-Mart just made it possible for that business that barely survived year after year because they were the only deal in town to fail. The reason that business failed is because it made the wrong decisions. Once a big store moves in (doesn't matter if it's Wal-Mart, Target, K-mart or Meijer), the econmic environment changed. Either teh local business has to change or they die. It's that Simple. If I was in a similar situation, I would have started to provide things Wal-Mart couldn't. How about taking a Organic Stance? Provide things Wal-Mart can't....how about a free delivery service? How about higher quality goods rather then the cheap stuff you've been buying? Ever heard of advertsing? Wal-Mart sure has. It IS possible to survive Wal-Mart moving into town. Many others have done so....it's just not what's talked about on the news because that kind of new IS positive and not Negative. "Evil" Wal-Mart moving in and taking over a town is news because it's negative.....you never hear of Wal-Mart moving in and things flourishing around it which HAS happened.
Useless bits of Junk?
Picard's 1st season uniform
Klingon Captain's chair
Desktop Computer from Voyager
Maybe useless bits, but still all good stuff....and the best piece:
The Enterprise NCC-1701-A from Star Trek 5 and 6.
I would love to have any of these.
There's a worker bee and the model of the NCC-1701-A (Enterprise A from the Undiscovered Countyr). I would qualify that as TOS(except it's the Movies not the TV show). They also have Kirk's outfit from the Search for Spock and the go climb a rock shirt he wore in Star Trek 5.

You chose the wrong language......
C, C++, Java and heck even C# would have been a better choice. Kylix?? WTF is that?? I have heard of it, but it's really really obscure.
