Looked at ALL of these and many are not what I am asking for. I am asking for a batch job scheduler. Quartz only works for Java programs is what I gather. Most of the others are for cluster scheduling. Thanks for doing what I already DID.
There are MANY close source schedulers that do exactly as I laid out but they cost mega bucks. CA makes one as do many others. I guess my Ask Slashdot was totally worthless because no one obviously works in a production environment that has a operator watching things. I guess schedulers are not sexy enough.
While this is a great and doable idea, I need something operator proof. This ain't it. Also, scripts do not have the abilities I ask for. It has to WORK and it has to be EASY to setup. This is non of that. I COULD manage it, but a Operations person who has little programming experience would not be able to decipher what's going on.
S.R. Hadden: First rule in government spending: why build one when you can have two at twice the price?
To explain why it seems it only took the empire a few years to build the second Death Star when it appeared to take them 18-19 years to build Death Star I...The simply built them in paralell. Once the frame of the first was finished, the started building the second. Also, there's time between each movie. It seems that there's about 10 years between each movie, so it's not suprising that they had enough time to build a second death star.
I don't see how Windows can be cheaper from a compute cycle standpoint. You lose compute cycles during patches on all systems, it's just with Linux, you lose WAY less. You don't have to reboot. All you have to do is bounce services and your up and going. Microsoft just tells you to reboot because of the nutso way they run things. Even on Windows, you can do things to make reboots unnecessary.
Not might....will, but for what I do, it performs just fine. It's a little like the guys who insist that 100 fps on a 3d shooter isn't good enough. The drive I have captures video from my firewire with out a lick of frame drops or stuttering. My next drive may be a combo USB 2/Firewire drive. As for FW800, well, I don't have a good machine for editing HD on yet so I really don't need the performance.
Curious...did you cart the thing from place to place? I know some people who do this and that is a sure way to kill one of these. The Simpletech I have is not a bad drive. Also, most hard drives of the external variety I have been looking at for a while are priced similarly. LaCie's were even as cheap as the Simpletech.
This goes to show you that it's always a good idea to have backups. My back up for my stuff is the tape I originally recorded the stuff on. I almost never reuse a tape unless it's just something I am playing around with. In variably, I will end up recapturing the video anyway so I can get things just right when I start a new project including historical video (video from year to year of my son growing up).
Glory? I know of NO ham who wants this specificaly. Most of the hams I know want to honestly help. Only glory any ham I see is the glory of achieving a WAS award or a DXCC award. Ham radio is a fun hobby, but most hams realize that they are not world changers....they just help pick up the pieces. I have NEVER seen this puffery you speak of.
This is not news. It was GOING to happen. Period. That said, I saw it. It was a work of are visually. I personally did not mind the acting too much because one thing that we need to remember is they are doing a tremendous amount of the job with green screens. That has GOT to put an actor into a situation where it's just HARD to perform 100 percent. How can you, with a straight face, sword fight with a invisible green dude? ANYWAY....I actually did tear up a bit when Anakin made the final turn. I was a little disappointed that he turned just because of the dream he had of Padme dying during childbirth which ended up being true, but I guess it stands that he lost his mother and he did not want to lose Padme. And palpatine contnues is treacherous ways. He even lied to his apprentice by telling him he killed her in his fit of anger. I guess the Death Star takes roughly 20 years to build, so Palpy must build 2 at nearly the same time...maybe staggered by about 10 years. One thing is for certain..I am whipping out a new hope tonight to watch it.
Why don't you check out http://www.arrl.org/ and see. We do provide a service that many others asre not willing to do (FRS, CB and and to a lesser extent, GMRS are bands coming to mind here). Emergency Service is actually PART of the rules that give us our priviledges.
GOOD ham groups are great volunteers and eyes and ears for law enforcement, American Red Cross and other agencies. Emergecny Communcations provided by hams is NOT just a PR illusion. It's real.
8,000 homes do not a proper trial make. While I will agree with the section chief (I am a league member) with the experience with this ONE trial, wait until it's launched to 8,000,000 homes. I can easily find a area where 8,000 people live where there's no hams. Granted, one can always ask ARES or other league memebers to help check it out, but again, this is a VERY small trial for a city as large as Cinncinnati.. I have heard the recordings of BPL interference and it's not good. BPL iis an excuse for the telcos and cable operators to NOT wire the rural. If they would just do that, then we would not need BPL and the FCC would not have been so gung ho about a STUPID idea.
Because GFLOPS only matter to us geeks thats why. They are a meaningless metric. GFLOPS are horrible at measuring true performance. Benchmarks are better, but still not good. The only thing that matters is does the game play at an acceptable rate and most games will do just that.
Yeah my non techie brother loves em too. I am so sick of Microsoft acting like they are top dog still. Microsoft, mediocre is what gave you the market....now that people are seeing better stuff out there and your trying to tell them we don't need it. Sounds like Palm when they were being raked over the coals for NOT having a color screen.
Yes but what if you want to have two or more unrelated, but relevant spreadsheets open?? Tabs in spreadsheets are for creating multiple month summaries or department break downs or what have you. Sure, you can have 5 different tabs that all do different functions, but, besides being confusing(all sheets in your xls file should be related), how is that even like what they are proposing here??
Me thinks you mean Windows Messenger. MSN Messenger uninstalls just fine. I have done so in the past. Windows Messenger is a PITA! Windows Messenger is like MSN messenger and it even works with it and looks the same as a older version, but it's there mainly for corporate use....one can set up their own messenger server. There is a hack that removes it for good and I have had to use it.
I use a 120 GB Simpletech USB 2.0 drive as my capture/video editing repository and it works smashingly well. One time I forgot about saving the project to the Powerbook drive and was wondering why in heck iMovie HD was dropping frames and discovered I was using the internal drive. The USB 2.0 drive performs WAY better.
WHat if I use a Mac and only have one button?;) I agree with you though, copying and pasting the URL isn't hard.
Personally, spam has ruind e-mail as a marketing tool for me and I would never use a glitzy HTML mail at this point now anyway. Why? Because another goal of advertsiing is to be noticed....that glitzy HTML mail can likely be lost in the spam. The text only e-mails stick out now.
I use it, but only cause I have to. HTML is meant for the WEB and not for E-mail. Many readers have issues with it and also since it is a e-mail noone takes the time to make sure screen readers for the blind can read these e-mails. Marketing needs to KNOW this stuff. They can't just do up a slick HTML E-mail and send it out and assume everyone will be able to read it. While it's likely most corporate users will sue a client capable of it, not everyone will. I know some people who still swear by Pine and Elm for mail readers. I also tend to think that HTML screws up mail digests from listserv's as I can never read the digets, but I can always see the web archive.
And that would be a bad thing?? It's called prioritization. If our Congress can't push the really important bigger bill to the front because of a bunch of smaller bills, then that tells me that they need to learn a little time management. This is WHY I am FOR changing the Filibuster rules. Filibusters WASTE time.
Real-ID is a BAD thing. No two ways about it. It will cost the states untold amounts of money. If the National Governors Association brings forth a suit, then I bet that if this goes to the Supreme's that they will shoot it down as it stomps on the rights of the states.
This whole subterfuge around CherryOS never was needed. If MXS understood the GPL, they CAN sell the code along with some NON-GPL'd code. That's perfectly legal. What isn't is what they did. They DID not distribute the code. They completely did where they got it from (and not that well) and never acknowledged the PearPC project at all. The fact that he's closing down proves he just doesn't understand. All he had to do was release source. THAT'S IT! End of story. He had to release the PearPC code and any modifications he made to the GPL'd parts. He could have still had his front end be closed.
Where the hell have you been? There are at LEAST 10 different models available everyday at Walmart. Every NON-Geek friend I know wants to have one and now that they are CHEAPER then alot of laptops, they are selling decently. When our Walmart had a special during the Christmas shopping season, they flew off the shelf. No I don't work there nor would I ever, but I did try to get one or at least look at one and I never made it in time to look at the model I wanted. Also, one of the hottest toys of the last Christmas season was the VideoNow Player. Granted, I would never buy one for my son in a million years because they suck, but, my non-geek neighbors bought them up in droves. Also, you must not have kids. If I did not give my son a video or something else to keep him occupied when on a long car trip, he'd drive me stir crazy. If the demand for portable video isn't there, then why are there at least 2-3 different models of media players, portable dvd players and other media type devices being announced every other moneth? Obviously it MUST be popular or they would nto keep bringing them out.
As for the recoding the iMovie component, if Apple made one, they could make it support DV or HDV (not likely right now), but I don;t hav ethe hard disk space to store every single iMovie I made in DV format. Besides, if I need something from my old project, I could always recapture it from my cam corderif I absolutely have to. If Apple made a portable video player, then I could just move the quicktime files to it straight away and it would work. Right now, there's NO portable anything (not even a version of quicktime for Pocket PC) that supports ANY Quicktime format except ones I don't really call Quicktime at all, DIVX. I guess I can save it to DIVX and move it? That would work I guess, but if they made a portable player, they could just have a hotlink within iMovieHD to say share to the iVid player and it would save everything in the proper format and it would look great.
SO far, ASOT has been telling it like it is, but not providing us with anything beyond just his post that should prove, to me, that I should trust him which is probably why he marked him as a foe. WHO exactly is he? Is he a actual Developer working for Apple? Is he Steve Jobs? Is he someone else that is high up in Apple? Or is he just some fan boy sputing off the party line and making it look like he knows all. All I know is if he acutally works for Apple, he should listen a little to what is being said here rather then saying we're wrong. I seem to remember about 5 years ago someone coming out with something that Creative Labs and others had already made and alot of us NICHE folks thought it sucked. How many of us "niche" folks as well as non-geeks now own a iPod?? An awful lot of is I would say! Sometimes you have to make something that mainstream America doesn't even know it wants until they see it. If everyone relied on what the mainstream wanted, we would not even have computers now would we??

launchd is too new for me to dedicate to a production scheduler. It's also exactly like.....cron. Not what I am looking for.
