I wish everyone would STOP acting like Microsoft owns multi touch technology. Microsoft has just come out with a WORSE implementation of it then Microsoft and others have done. Cameras? Not a MULTI TOUCH screen?? Yeah if you had actually read the Surface announcement, it actually uses a camera technology versus having a actual multi touch surface liek the iPhone uses.
On the other hand, I think this has to be a record with a new technology getting Linux support. It used to be you'd have to wait a while to get new technology on Linux. Not anymore.
pSeries are the same so I would go for those as well. Also, the pSeries can do what VMware wishes it can do in most respects. Don't get me wrong, VMware ESX is a great product as is the workstation, but it's just not the same.
Boy you don't really know do you?? The iSeries is virtually the SAME as the pSeries. In fact, it runs the same processor, a Power5 in the newest machines. Alot of people will claim that the pSeries itself is a mainframe but it is most definitely NOT a mainframe. The pSeries is IBM's part of the PowerPC Triumvirate of Motorola, Apple and IBM. Apple is now done with PowerPC and Motorola still makes them. IBM is the leader now and the pSeries is selling like hotcakes. Power5's work so well that the iSeries uses them. In fact, OS/400 will run on a pSeries and AIX will run on a iSeries. IBM's pSeries even have PCI-X slots and in fact had them before most PC's did.
The only thing is where did you get this information? I am guessing MAYBE that IBM is going to use Power5's in EVERY platform....i, z and p. I did a quick google search and found this. This article goes on to say that it is FALSE and the Power6 isn't going to be used in the zSeries. I DO think myself that this would be a smart way to go. As the pSeries gets more and more powerful, I see it as inevitable. In fact, Power6 plus AIX 5.4 will allow you to move running LPARS between 2 different physical machines (machines similar to the p570 and p590/595). This means the Power platform will gain abilities that VMware's ESX server has now very soon. This may seem late, however a LPAR is different then VMware. LPAR's more like virtualizing the server at a PHYSICAL level. You have to have the physical CPU's in order to run the partition.....BUT you can also do what is similar to what VMware does and do a Micropartition. With Micropartitioning, you can assign as little as.001 of a processor dynamically to a LPAR. When setting it up, you can allocate as little as.1 processor and inrease the processing power as it's running by.001 processor increments. You may ALSO have that LPAR think it's running on a dual processor machine even though it's only running on a percentage of one processor.
IBM's Power platform is definitely not dead and definitely not a mainframe, although it kind of acts like one at times!:D Long live PowerPC!:D
Why did they not have the iPod and other non cellular functions work without activation? Also, why activate through iTunes? I mean these 2 things means you are really leaving the store with something that does not work. Also, the stupid phone is locked to the hilt ot not even accept a AT&T SIM from another phone. It can only use the sim that it comes with and THAT sim CAN be used in other phones. Mornic. Glad I am not buying one.
Aww man get my hopes up! Cepstral voice reading me a Slashdot story?? MEH! I would actually ENJOY listening to a new Geeks in Space. Yeah, that's so last century, but I don't care. Geeks in Space was a podcast but with out the RSS!:D
Um, Treos are 399.99 with a plan on Verizon's website. Without subsidy, it would probably be 600. Oh and they currently have a 150 mail in rebate which would make it 249.99.
Damn.....check before you make outrageous statements!
And in the US, I am afraid that MOST phones are subsidized. Granted, the subsidy might only be 50-100 on a smart phone, it's still there.
I find it really interesting if you look at the Russian mafia angle. Maybe Nina's in Russia?? I think that is where she really is considering that she had obtained Russian citizenship for both of her children. While Reiser is, shall we say, unique, he does not sound much different then alot of geeks. I hope something happens and he's freed. With the Children in Russia, there may never be a straight answer to what happened to Nina.
Unless it has a separate waste container and it likely doesn't, all of that toner that is supposedly in that cart may be waste toner. We have waste containers in our big ones to catch it. I am betting most companies just dump it somewhere in the bottom of the cart. Lasers DO waste alot of toner, but not nearly as bad as inkjets.
NO! Better yet, just send mom a new memory card every month and bam....new pictures of the kiddies! NO network required and it's something MOM might understand!
You are correct. IBM had Power 5 CPU's for their Bladecenter chassis. Although with virtualization, Blades may be come a thing of the past. It's now increasingly common to see pSeries shops running many LPARS on a p570 or 590 chassis. Anyway, there's no reason Apple could not have put one of these blade p5's in a MacBook Pro or MacBook. Actually, if they did that, it would still be a Powerbook. On the other side of the coin, however, the price would be much higher then MacBooks and MacBook pro's currently are.
I hate to say it, but this REALLY.....REALLY sucks. SciFi must care more about wrestling then anything else. I hope that this isn't true.....there's STILL time!
WRONG. AIX was written for IBM's counterpart to PowerPC, the POWER technology. In fact, it runs the same instruction set and more then the old PowerPC based Macs. AIX probably never ran on the mainframe unless you get 32-64 processor pSeries machines a mainframe. IBM's pSeries machines are the largest machines that run UNIX or Linux on PC like systems. You can't buy a Intel box with more then 8 maybe 16 cores now(are there quad CPU boards that will take 4 quad core intel chips??). The top of the pSeries runs 64 processores. You can also fractionate the CPU's as low as.1 CPU per LPAR. I wouldn't go that low, but I would definitely go to.5 or even.25 CPU per LPAR.
The thing AIX definitely is is rock hard stable. I don't remember the last time we had an outage due to AIX. It was always application and possibly hardware (but very rare).
Wih Power 6, LPARS will have some capability to be moved around. I am REALLY looking forward to that!
I am sad to be from Kucinich's state. Luckily, he's not in my district, but he's been a nutter since day one. Even when he comes up with a decent idea, noone will touch it because of that and I personally think if he goes for re-election, he will lose.

Damn straight. I still loved the Y2K Geeks in Space.

Just go to System 76. They build better stuff anyway.
I liked the West End Games version better. Too bad it's probably history since West End Games is gone (bought by Wizards of the Coast).

The foam that broke off was from the old foam....but it was stock piled BX 250. This foam weakens with age.
GEESH! Missed that part! Anyway, Walmart has one of these for about 99 bucks. Been thinking about getting one for my desk at work.

What is this RS/6000 you speak of? IBM hasn't called POWER based servers RS/6000 for years. It's pSeries now.
Good point. I know alot of people who do buy it on iTunes or download it on that thing called a torrent! ;D
Nielsen AND NBC/Universal.....get with the friggin times.
Yep....it flew right under DRADIS and did not get noticed enough.....
Yeah they are right bastards.
Huh? Did you SEE the season 3 finale?? Oh well.
I hate to say it, but this REALLY.....REALLY sucks. SciFi must care more about wrestling then anything else. I hope that this isn't true.....there's STILL time!
Yeah my boss keeps calling us resources. I quite frequently remind him I am not a resource like a server, or a software provider, I am a human being.
Now when's Sysadmin Day??
Yes thank you for your informative post. I hope you continue to post on Slashdot even though you don't have to. ;)
