Who says Gator won't take their IPO cash and then write a version for Mac OS and Linux distros? Supporting this kind of garbage in any way is sick and wrong, no matter what OS you use. Sound business model? According to your logic, extorionists, organized crime, and bank robbers also have a sound "business model", so that makes what they do ok I guess, whether we like it or not.

I haven't tried to play any games on this system - I simply use it to do video editing, listen to mp3s while I code, and watch DVD movies on it. It works great for all that. I especially like the NVIDIA SoundStorm with real-time Dolby Digital 5.1 encoder. I'm sure you're right about the fixed clock and all that, but the average person, including me, doesn't notice a difference. I have nice speakers hooked up to my computer, and as far as sound goes, I don't hear a difference.

I also used to hate onboard audio... but all motherboards that use the Nforce/Nforce2 chipsets quickly changed my mind, enough so that I sold my creative soundblaster live because I didn't need it anymore. I like having a freed up pci slot and less clutter in the case. Not to mention the onboard audio on my Abit board using Nforce2 had one hell of a gui to control all the features. Nvidia does a great job with drivers, and their onboard sound is no different. I did have another Abit board using the nforce1 chipset, and the onboard nic started acting up so I had to turn it off in the bios. I knew 3 other people with the same board that eventually had the same thing happen. Eventually, the whole board started acting up... so having things onboard isn't always a great idea, especially if one of those things goes bad.

while that sounds good, there are ISPs out there that lease routers to customers... on site. So, the customer would have physical access to the router even though they don't own it. Without padlocking the router shut, this would be very insecure. I'm taking the stance that there shouldn't be a back door at all.... Sure, maybe a way to reset the admin password, along with the entire flash rom, from the physical box... but backdoor? No way.

You're forgetting one important thing M$ would lose on: revenue from games because they can now be pirated and played... without a modchipped console. People can just copy them from a friend and play them on a computer that contains no piracy check. Expect M$ to come down on this product like a 10 ton sledge hammer.... I'm not saying it's right, but that's what they will do.

I agree with you - I have no interest in unencrypting my iTunes files. However, some people would argue that by burning a CD and then creating an mp3 from it, you are losing a lot of quality. My ears aren't the greatest, but I sometimes think I can tell a difference between an mp3 created in that fashion vs the original iTunes download. But then again, maybe it's just my imagination - either way, that's how I convert my music - by burning it to CD first.

    1) Hotmail. It sucks more now that ever before - if you want more space, it'll cost you. Also, it requires you to have a passport account to use.

    2) WebTV. My grandma has one. It used to be nice, and it appeared that it would keep adding features over time. M$ has all but killed off that part of their business.

    3) IE. Absolutely no new features in years. Full of holes, no pop up blocker, and it basically functions the same as it did when 5.0 shipped with Win2k.

I've always thought about that as well, being in Colorado/Iowa most of my life. It seems dumb to waste energy running the fridge/freezer when the weather outside is much colder than the fridge settings. During the summer you would obviously need to use the energy - but during the winter you could save a ton of power. You'd pretty much just need a thermometer, fan, and a vent running outside. It could have a door that closes the vent up when the temp reaches your preset level. It's definitely not rocket science, it would just require some duct work through your house.

It's slightly high priced right now - so I think the only company that would be able to beat it is one that can compare in size and quality, yet undercut the price.

Yeah, that would be a cool idea... but thinking like a hacker, I can see the following "work-arounds":

    1) If the ROM allows a program, such as explorer.exe to run because it's trusted... then a hacker would simply have to buffer overflow IE in some form and create an "add in" for explorer that can now run trusted.

    2) Or you could buffer overflow the actual part of the OS that decides based on the ROM disc if a program is trusted or not. If you can comprise the actual authenticating part of the OS, all is lost.

I think in theory is a good idea, and probably an extra step to make things safer, but I'm pretty sure there will always be a work around for anything.

I agree that most users are dumb, and shouldn't have full access to their machines. But at the same time, when you take away access and give it to a select few companies, that's even worse.
