  1. Re: Finding Holiday Discounts on iPods? on Finding Holiday Discounts on iPods? · · Score: 1

You really are an Apple zealot in the worst sense. Apple does tend to give people the impression that their products have a higher quality when manufactured. However, my power mac 6500 still had fans that died in it equally as often as a standard PC of any brand. And your comment here:

"So MPEG-4 AAC is not proprietary, and neither the AAC format nor the DRM technology is specific to Apple."

Really. I see. So, why is it that I can't play a song I purchased on iTunes on any other device, even if it supported the ACC standard. Oh, that's right, the propietary DRM scheme of iTunes and the iPod.

"Ooooh, battery problems. Oh, no! By the time the battery dies, I'll be ready for a bigger iPod. I'll probably get one of those $50 replacement batteries anyway, just because $50 is good for a FireWire hard drive, but I wouldn't mind buying a new iPod in three years."

Fine, have it your way. Not everybody can afford to buy a new iPod in 18 months just because the battery dies. I don't care who makes a product, it will never last on the market with failure rates of a major component 18 months down the line. Imagine buying a TV every 18 months becuase the picture tube dies that often. People are not cheapskates just because they can't afford to shell out $299, $399, or even $499 because of a damn battery. But ofcourse you always have the option of sending Apple your iPod and $99 just to get a refurbed one. And I don't know where the hell you got the $50 battery - Apple charges $99 and you have to give up your iPod to get a different one. How nice.

Hey, mod this post up. (I don't see how it's off topic people!!) If apple isn't going to cut prices, another competitor will - and sounds like they did. The Zen isn't made by Apple, and all the Apple "loyalists" will ignore it as a result, but for the average consumer, this product competes very nicely. The iPod is built well, very well that is, but with the battery problems it has, the Zen has that advantage of removeable batteries and a lower cost. The only thing the Zen doesn't do is sync up with iTunes and play a propietary Apple format... which doesn't bother me one bit to be honest. I can't speak for the quality of the Zen, but I'm sure it has a warranty.

I'm all for stability, and I do appreciate Red Hat's backporting and all that, sometimes. Other times it makes using other software packages that require specific versions of software a real bitch. Cold Fusion MX is a great example of that. It's *finally* able to support Red Hat 9's latest version of Apache.

Back to my point though.... I do contribute to Red Hat in various ways. One such way is buying boxed versions of almost every release they have shipped for the last 5 or 6 years. I didn't have to do that, but I did. My company also didn't have to do that, but did. Red Hat programmers didn't write a majority of the code that is in their distribution. Open Source programmers did. While I appreciate the fact that Red Hat puts together the code nicely in neat little package, I don't think it completely justifies the price they charge, and the fact that it's an absolute requirement in their eyes.

Granted, I will probably purchase a license or two for my company because the support would be nice in a business setting. However, small businesses will not appreciate this since using Red Hat has been a great solution to help business avoid high server-software costs from Redmond. I don't think any business, large or small, will want to use Fedora in production.

Yeah, the sales people at those stores are horribly clueless. For example, the newer model is the one that does NOT come with the network adapter bundle. Their still pimping out the old 39001 with that deal. If you want the new model, you have to purchase the standalone PS2 for $180. The sales guy at Target was telling people all around him how he doesn't understand why people would want the standalone when for $20 you get so much more. He obviously isn't bothered by the extreme loudness of the fans in that 39001 and before models. The fact of the matter is, those sales people are not educated at all on the products, and really have no business giving advice to people who don't know any better.

Actually... just because your Sony doesn't claim support for DVD+/-RW media doesn't mean it doesn't have it. I know for a fact that with the right brand of discs, you can get every single model of the PS2 sold in the U.S. to read them. I have used every model:

    SCPH-30001
    SCPH-30001 R
    SCPH-35001
    SCPH-39001
    SCPH-50001

You have to usually burn the DVDs at 1x, NO FASTER! And I generally find that Verbatim discs work the best - but other brands do work, you just have to try one to know. The later models obviously do better, the SCPH-30001 is the worst out of the bunch - but it WILL read discs burned at 1x of both the -R and +R formats. If you can't get it to work, you aren't trying hard enough :)
