Wow. You can really see the bias inherent in slashdot when a post calling conservatives Nazis gets modded +5 Insightful.
(National Socialist = Nazi)
You should probably have made it clearer you were eluding to the party, as a socialist can still be nationalist and not be a Nazi (if you see what I am saying). Although this can be depend on the type of extreme-nationalism present in the country. For instance Welsh extreme-nationalism would be to have complete freedom from the UK, and be a completely seperate state. English extreme-nationalism seems to be represented by the BNP and UKIP - xenophobic, homophobic, Europhobic and racist "political parties". Many believe that the left-right, linear model of political ideology should be more of a ring - although this could mean people could become so far to the left in their ideology they suddenly become totalitarian dictators; a point some may have drawn from your comment. Personally the whole liberal-conservative thing in America seems to be a little off, as most "liberals" are social democrats and most "conservatives" are neo-conservatives, more market-driven than caring about traditions.
I think this strain of the comments has struck upon a problem with the IT industry as a whole. When I had to do work experience in the IT helpdesk of our local council I had to go around with someone who would try to fix user's problems. 99.9% of the time these computers were mid-range PCs running like a 286. Just completely filled with spy/ad/malware. No firewall, no malware scanner and most of the time no Anti-viurs. These people just did not know anything about computers.
*sigh* OK give me a while and I'll post a short list. I just need to gather some of the notes I've got somewhere. You'll have to wait a while for me to post my messy, disorganised notes from a while back. In the meantime you can always just go watch Antiques Roadshow or something.
That's why Steve gave a strange answer to the question "You know how to write regular expressions, right?" The idea I was trying to project was that Steve, in fact, did not know regular expressions. In fact he barely knew how to use a computer.
Will these machines have some kind of programming environments on them? If people can learn languages that the computer industry value they can become useful workers. Companies could employ programmers from these poorer areas and the promise of a better life could push students to work as hard as they can in these subjects.
[Team Leader]: So Steve is new here so, Bob, why don't you show him a simple virus definition for one of these low-priority viruses?
[Bob]: Sure. This virus is low-threat but can masquarade as numerous file names so why don't you just look for a common pattern and write a REGEXP function?
[Steve]: Sure.
[Bob]: You know how to write regular expressions, right?
[Steve]: Yeah, sure, the one's with the asterisks.
[Bob]: Erm, yeah. I'll leave you to it. Just send it to the database so it can get filed in the next update.
[Steve]: OK, see you later.
*Looks around nervously. Briefly glances at long list of file names then timidly enters:*
Luckily people have pointed out the inaccuracy in your statement. Unluckily for me I no longer have anything intelligent to contribute. I should probably say that travelling around London on the trains isn't that bad, people make out like it is living hell. I've often had to wait longer for a bus to come along than I would have to wait for a train to the same place. They don't look very nice (the older ones, I mean) and the tracks are a bit dodgy but apart from that it's a decent service. Would rather it wasn't privatised but that's what you get if you let a nutjob like Thatcher alienate her party and the public. On an even more off-topic note you can blame Mrs. Thatcher for pretty much every problem facing British politics today, if you can be bothered to do the research.
I agree, people shouldn't throw around accusation of corruption without getting their facts straight first. It will only lead to comparisons that many will feel are too close to home or unjustified. Anyway, on-topic, I think there may have just been a misunderstanding. There is quite a lot of piracy distribution among the younger generation in the UK, might have thought it was some criminals trying to cash in.
Government enforcement never really works in any country. The reasons for this have been thrashed out on Slashdot thousands of times. Can't we all just go home and not worry about this kind of stuff? Governments do stuff we cannot do anything about but whinging won't get you anywhere.
Oh and in the UK we have ratings U, PG, 12A, 12B, 15, 18 and the extremely-uncommon R. That covers the age gap you talked about pretty well, or so I think so. The enforcement of these ratings becomes more strict with the higher ratings. I think Japan have the right idea really, I'd probably be in favour of such a system in Britain.
Also I don't think game developers will alter game content that much for younger audiences, they could just include a content lock ala Half Life. As long as the rating system used is descriptive enough consumers (and parents) should know what to expect from a game.
You seem misinformed as to what jihad actually is. Your assumption that jihad means death shows you ignorance of plain facts. The meaning jihad that Hollywood and the media put across is "death to non-Muslims" but it actually means a great self sacrifice. It can be used to describe long periods of fasting but extreme forms of Islam have corrupted its meaning in the same way extreme Christians manage to corrupt the meaning of the Bible to mean "kill all the black people". Sorry to go off topic a bit but it bugs me when people make false remarks and get it modded up to "insightful".
Is it me or are we ignoring the people of China? China was #1 on the list of highest amount of executions last year (or so I have been told) so maybe it is in Google's best interests to protect Chinese users from accidently going on a potentially unacceptable website and getting their head chopped off. If Chinese users want to browse an unrestricted web I am sure they can find a way of doing it illegally, just like Western users can find ways of watching potentially offensive entertainment.
I totally agree that is the craziest thing I have heard in a very long time. He won't even help out his grandmother? Somebody should have told her to switch to Linux (to go off-topic ever-so-slightly:D).
I agree totally. Remember the John Carmack quote: "Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important."
With hardware read-only switch. That would be a true safeguard against OS hacking - and yes I am aware of the difficulties of patching with new users who wouldn't know how to use the switch or would leave it off. On another note people have already made chips with Windows embedded.
Although if you want a cheap, good DVD player Ebuyer is the place to go. Don't think I'm pushing a product because I am a Ebuyer spy but they have a DVD player for 20 quid. Multiregion-capable (ie needs a simple button combination), 5.1 surround sound capable and has every single type of connector you can think of.

Don't you mean: worst...law...ever!
If only they would make a sequel to Outlaws...that would be great.

He could have been trying to get Solitaire to the top of the "Xfire most played" list. In which case he was rightfully fired.

"MagCap"? Is it April 1st already?
Warning! Windows is dangerous to your health! It is extremely advisable to move away from the Windows box and switch to a Linux machine.
I guess some people have got waaaaay to much time on their hands.
