Generally, CFCs have been banned shortly after DuPont's patents have run out on them. Then the newly patented refrigerants become 'necessary' until the patents run out on them.
There are plenty of other revenue producing platforms than Apple's scheme. It's ridiculous to buy into the Apple Hype.
There is no reason at all that Apple shouldn't pay 'promotional costs' for using musical artists as their sales inducement. The same royalties should go to the artists before and after the promotion period.
With regard to 'investors'- fuck off. Your 'investment' doesn't entitle you to spoils from Apple's rip-off of content providers. Maybe you should be clamoring for some fucking dividends, not kneeling at the altar of Apple's huge 'war chest' of unpaid dividends. It's almost Stockholm Syndrome. But everything about Apple seems that way sometimes.
And also one year newer, to block the resale of last year's edition on the secondary used market. Because the professor or one of their cronies collects a royalty on each new copy sold.
Plus, they're still pushing their mobile-integrated (and now XBox-integrated) unified platform idea,
I am absolutely certain they are banking on that whole idea succeeding. Personally, I am not at all interested in updating my Windows 7 desktop or laptop, but I can't wait for the Windows 10 update for my Asus Transformer tablet.
All Microsoft really has to do is get users to pick up a modern Windows tablet and use it for a little while, and they'll never go back to an Android Tablet, except for the apps library and what Play Store games they are already sucked into playing. There are very affordable Win 8 tablets from a number of mid-range vendors like Asus and Dell that are going to kill Android tablets and maybe, hopefully, the iPad. Who wants to run a toy OS if there's a real one out there that is even relatively open and will run any x86 app or application?
Well, you could see this as a 'good news' topic on Slashdot. Those points sound positive to me, too.
It will be important to Amazon's credibility, though, to find out more about this 'machine learning' thing. Will it be programmed to maximize sales? There's a fine balance between credibility and salesmanship.
Also, I couldn't help but thing that whole additional boiler-rooms full of online shill commenters are gonna need to be hired when this thing goes into effect. Do you have an English degree and/or good writing skills? Need work?
The weird thing is that Facebook tries to act like they are very mainstream and socially normative, but they don't have a mechanism in place for women to change from their maiden to their married name. It's almost like Facebook is based in a weird reality where they don't even know that a woman would ever do something like that.
That's funny, because my dog had a Facebook Account, specifically to play Farmville. I would never do anything that stupid, nor want a potential employer to know I would waste time that way. Not that my dog played it very long, either.
People have been threatening to abandon Facebook for various minor transgressions every year that it's been around, and it keeps getting bigger. It's not going anywhere for a while.
There are other measures that are important, though. Like, more people have probably quit using Facebook this year than started using it in it's first five years of existence.
It can continue to grow bigger and more stupid. People catch on, and when they get a clue they back away. Facebook is probably as ubiquitous now as the National Enquirer magazine. But we all see that magazine at the checkstands when we're buying groceries. Do we pick it up and read it, much less buy it? Part of our job is to make sure Facebook heads to the same place as the National Enquirer.
It would cost Facebook real money to do all that verification. Lots of it. They aren't really serious about this stuff. They just want to play both sides from the middle. In all ways and forms.
The major extinction event started thousands of years ago with the dawn of humanity. If anything, as a race we have improved over time and are more conscious of the need to care for our environment than ever before. It isn't a new issue and it isn't modernity or 'the western way' that has caused it.
It's the ''we have got to make immediate major changes NOW'' sentiment that some of us are speaking against. That's the Freshman Activist way of seeing things. The 'grown ups' advocating stuff like that are zealots and opportunists. They are lifetime 'organizers' who benefit mostly from the churn of social frenzy. Don't hang around their lit tables too long. You'll end up either joining their cult or burning out.
Instead, go out into the world and make the many small real changes you can, which includes raising the awareness of others but does not mean needing to join the cult, chant the chants, or feeding the power base of the opportunists running 'campaigns.' Slogans are feel-good mantras. Real change involves more.
With the ongoing convergence of Xbox and Windows 10, it is only going to get worse for Linux gamers. Better download Virtual Box. In fact, right now would be a great time to download Virtual Box, because you can install the Widows 10 preview and get it 'validated' when you install it as a VM on your Linux box. Then you're set, and you've not had to pay the Microsoft Tax.
Believe it or not, some people run a computer for other than cosmetic reasons. It wouldn't be enough to make the desktop 'look' like Windows.
So while you might enjoy running whatever Window Manager is in vogue at the coffeehouse, the rest of us are loading other stuff on our computers like word processors, spreadsheets, and browsers.
If you're running X11 isn't the Tab Windows Manager good enough? It wasn't for me, so I've upgraded to FVWM2 but twm is a decent and usable Window Manager, too. It's installed as part of the base X11 install on NetBSD. Your results may vary if you run a clone like Linux.
For some reason, it doesn't look any different to me than it did a year or a month or week ago. But I bitchslapped Slashdot's configuration so long ago that the last time I looked, I couldn't even find any configuration controls to do whatever I did. My goal at the time was 'simple' and they offered some 'simple' options if I recall. I haven't seen any share buttons.
But I am also hesitant to change ANYTHING in the settings for my account. This site is fragile in strange ways. That's been my experience in the past.
CPUs don't 'have' power. They consume power. A powerful CPU is one that has the potential to consume a lot of power doing some form of calculation. The point in IoT embedded controllers is to consume as little power as possible. If they are loaded up with tasks that have nothing to do with their embedded purpose, they will consume more power (watt) and since they're not optimized for the task, they will do so inefficiently.
I have 20 year old Windows VMs. It isn't a remote or obscure thing. And since Windows 20 years ago came on 7 floppy diskettes (including video and printer drivers) it's not very complex.
That "toy" operating system operates a lot cash registers these days.
Embedded applications like a POS/cash register are ideal to host on 'toy' operating systems. You just want a base to put one big heavy 'app' on and for the OS to stay outta the way. That's very different from a general purpose Operating System.
A good benchmark would be this Asus Transformer I am typing this on compared to the Mac and the Google tablet. It came with Windows 8.1 and a full Office 2013 Home and Student license for under $300. It's x86 but one of the new 'Atom family' processors which are MUCH more than the old netbook atoms but less than a full iSeries x86. Battery life is good enough that the only times it's been a problem is when I've forgotten to plug in the charger for extended periods of time. Being easy to forget to plug in is a sign of good battery life, IMO.
Price wise, it just plain kicks the Apple tablet out of the court, and it includes a physical keyboard. It's so nice to have a tablet that runs real Windows. I don't intend to ever upgrade my Windows 7 desktop to Windows 8, but 8 and the metro interface are great for a tablet. I really wish Mozilla hadn't decided to abandon Metro, but IE is decent. Better than the stunted 'mobile' browsers in the App stores for Android and IOS.
I replaced two earlier Android tablets with this Asus win tablet, and haven't looked back.
All kinds of people say they are iPad fans, but many of the people stuck with them are kids in schools that assign them an iPad. And believe me, anything a school assigns to kids is the opposite of 'cool' and few of the kids will be 'fans.'

Sister Mary Elephant was a nun.

Old Olsonic hasn't used anything from Microsoft since Windows 3.1. That's a very bitter slashbotter.
"Not only that, but here's the stuff I want us ALL to do to fix the problem.. If we all work together to do exactly what I say...." etc. etc. etc.
I bought The White Album at Half-Price books. It was only six or seven dollars.
Now I have 'the dongle' that ensures my permanent rights to the MP3s that I rip off the CDs.
You can't buy anything streamed at a used media store. I like buying books, music, and movies at Half-Price books. I like going there in general.

What could possibly go wrong with that?
Obviously the only requirement for a good data center is scalability.
Is this a mis-placed April Fools post?

Harpooned!
You could even hunker on down to the Apple Store to buy their OEM drive. They love this kind of thing at the Apple store.
