    Those "locks" do nothing to protect the data, and the drive still spins up when power is applied. You can even retrieve the password if you know what you're doing. Full drive encryption is a much better solution.

    I would have just left after making my purchase, if one of those rent-a-cops would have tackled and detained me I would file charges of false arrest and kidnapping along with a civil suit. After all, they have no legal right to detain you.

    One of the problems people had when Vista came out was that MS dropped a lot of the old legacy APIs, this is why Windows 7 has the "XP Mode".

    Working on a DP rig isn't exactly working at sea. Hell I bet you get to go back to shore just about every day. BTW, comment on the "real knowledge" of seafaring when you've done a bunch of UNREPS and VERTREPS in a storm.

    Internet access at sea is quite slow though, its doubtful that he will be able to upload many photos during this time period. The best thing to do if you'll be near coastal is to have a cellular modem in your laptop. There is also no way that he will have access to the full sat bandwidth since much of that is reserved for ship operations. You'd lucky to get full 56k most of the time. I know this because I am a professional mariner. Internet on ships is usually limited to email and basic web surfing for the crew. Not to worry though, when you're in port there will be many places you can get online at. Sometimes the port itself will even have free wireless.

    Get a G1 without a contract and use it for 3 months. After the 3 months are up get the unlock code from T-Mobile and use it with AT&T.

    If he had done anything worthy of criminal punishment, they would have hit him with something. A suspended sentence means the prosecutor doesn't want to lose his high conviction rating and admit to the press that he did something stupid.
    Yep, he never should have taken the deal. You cannot convict someone for the actions of others.
