FTA:"that ghostlike particles from space could serve as probes to a world beyond our familiar three dimensions, the research team says."
The science freeks should be carefull!!
They just might find GOD in those other dimensions.
"The telephone poll was conducted with 1,229 adults, starting Friday and ending Wednesday."
Is that all the people they could find to reply in 6 days?
1229 people over a 6 day period is hardly noteworthy muchless newsworthy, but, why an i not suprised? This is a NewYork Times poll after all.
Call me whan the poll is nation wide and about 50 to 100 million people. They maybe i'll consider the results as being creditable and as reflecting the general opinion of Americans.
Polls such as this one are nothing but jokes. And the results are used to sway public opinion.
Here is a principle: God does not want FOOLS for sons and daughters. He wants smart folks that know how to protect themselves from the evil that infests this world. Even if that protection comes from using wicked people, their wicked wealth or even their wicked genetic engineering.
You claim to know the principles that are taught in the christian faith when you ask if "they will stand by their principles" or use science to save themselves, yet, you did not know the principle i state above taught by Jesus himself. Why is that?
Have all IT people work from home.:-) No office space to cool or heat. No coffee machine or water cooler. No overhead. Just house the machines and an small maintance staff.
"What is more important, be a showmen technologist like Jobs or an humanitarian missionaire like Gates?
Perceptions can be wrong. And the media can supply plenty of incorrect perceptions.
I thank both men for giving us the computers we all have become so use to. And both men have had a huge influence on the computer market too, imho.
But to answer the question; Gates is a very shrewd business man who is known for creating a market for himself. My experience is these types of people generally are not of the humanitarian type until they are forced to be.(nothing wrong with that and nothing wrong with Gates having a good PR team and wife to making him look humanitarian). Jobs OTOH is a people driven person, even though he may drive them too hard. Because he understands the value of streaching folks to get their best. So he is more likely to be a real humanitarian under non-work conditions.
From the article: "The US military seeks the capability to knock out every telephone, every networked computer, every radar system on the planet."
While i appreciate the leaders of our country protecting Americans, seeking the capability to knock out every telephone, every networked computer, every radar system on the planet is quite extreme and can only be compared to nuclear warfare. Because while the destruction worldwide may not be as quick as nuclear warfare, the destruction worldwide will be quite as total nonetheless.
Exactly where do they think this type of esclation is going to get us? When news of this spreads world wide, even our friends may get concerned and build aliances with bad guys because they have become afraid of our power.
From the article: "The fact that the "Information Operations Roadmap" is approved by the Secretary of Defense suggests that these plans are taken very seriously indeed in the Pentagon."
You obviously have not had to make real-to-life business decisions yet. What you are complaining about is product development, not business decisions as we say in the article.
We have to pick our fights carefully in life as well as in our professional life. Some battles can be won, some can not be won. This one could not be won. For now anyway.
"'inappropriate violence' clause--such as violence exhibited in some of today's popular video games."
If the game makers had used some type of self-restraint and cooperation like we see the movie industry doing with their ratings for vchips maybe there would be no need for stupid laws.
In exchange for a free gaming experience I am willing to suffer the Coke, Pepsi, and other ads, much like I do in "the real world,"
And are you willing to have their ad server placed on your computer? Or maybe a "Sony-type-Root-Kit"? How about some more of tracking devices and spyware that advertisers love so much? Do you actually think all you are going to do is put up with a flashing ad here and there?
We do not have root-kits in "the real world" and you can avoid their advertising should you choose to do so in RL.
I say: "No Thanks" to that crap on my computer which i paid for.
"Electronic Arts, considered product placements and even wrote some into early storylines, the game's ad and design staffs decided against it."
Sim City has to be one of the most outstanding games ever made. Electronic Arts has to be one of the most outsanding game makers ever organized.
AND i knew
that it would be-a matter of time- before the
slim-ball--bottom-feeding--pond-scum--scurage-of-t he-earth advertisers tried to make their way into games and other software that people use for profit. They want people to pay money for a product to view their advertising! What utter GREED! IMHO
I will continue to support Electronic Arts by buying their products. Why? Because they make a good product and they make good business decisions.
But i was thinking more along the lines that fish are further up the food chain. So this could open up many more
possibilities as to life as we know it existing on other planets.
"isn't high on the list of Extreme Life Conditions."
True. But a fish makes it's own oxygen from water to live. So finding a fish in a high PH that still survives/thrives is impressive imho.
My thoughts exactly. A fish is much higher up the evolutionary chain then bacteria. Which proves that life a more complex life form as we know it can live in extreme conditions.
Your country has built the best flood protection system in the world. And i bet they used the same tactics you describe to build it. I say, "Whatever Works".
"the only way you can win consumers over is by offering them the most freedoms with their legally-purchased media."
What good does it do to win a consumer over with a product that has the capability to get them sued when they use one of the features of that product?(an example: The downloading of music)
In the situation where mom's were being sued for their children downloading music, the consumer (mom) bought a product (the computer) in good faith believing they (the kids)could use all of the features in the product. Mom also purchased a service (the ISP) to provide a way for the features of the computer to be used. And that purchase was also made in good faith that all features could be used.
It seems that the fox (record companies) could not get to the chickens (the download providers of music) so it went to the rooster (mom) to stop music downloading.
Consumer rights to own a product seems to be in last place in this on going debate.
"institute new taxes on abortion providers, soft drinks, and violent video games to fund the state's government."
Sin taxes. More sin taxes.
How did we get to a point in America where such a small number of people are allowed to decide for the larger number of people what is and is not a sin?
Some have tried to tax assorted food items as sin. Some have already sin-taxed alcohol and tobacco. What will be next if this is allowed to continue?
How about watching specific television programs, will that be taxed also? Will anything that is controversial to some be taxed? Maybe religion? Will going to church be considered a sin by some and get that taxed too?
It boils down to wanting to curtail the behavior or the activities that they find objectionable with taxes; therby by-passing the legal processes.
Abortion is a privacy issue as current law states.
Video games are a right to speech as current law applies
SoftDrinks Whats next? Will everything we eat and drink that some find questionable be taxed?
"'With their minds made up, brain activity ceased"
Well, this statement seems to sum up the political debate process in the world today quite nicely.
Now if we can just get their reproductive processes to cease activity too.

Frightning.
While i agree with your point of view on the topic, i simply can not go along with: "they ought to be shut out of public discourse."
It is the Britt's attitude on speech that prompted the American Constitution.
These are your 'good business decisions'?
You obviously have not had to make real-to-life business decisions yet. What you are complaining about is product development, not business decisions as we say in the article.
Nuff said.
whats with this troll shit?
As correct as you are, if enough parents compalin about violence in games then we will see more laws like this one.
Simple math really.

We have to pick our fights carefully in life as well as in our professional life. Some battles can be won, some can not be won. This one could not be won. For now anyway.
Good choice imho.

"Jealousy"
It sure ain't penis envy
