The people employing illegal immigrants are the bigger problem. By living in the US we agree to abide by US law which is in created for the betterment of US citizens. If you are giving less than minimum wage jobs out to illegal immigrants you are doing more damage to the US than the immigrants by entering the country. I think the anti-illegal immigrant sentiment is silly. Illegal immigrants are impoverished and trying to make a reasonable life. The people employing them are trying to improve their profit margins and screwing over other Americans. What do you think is more reprimandable, breaking the law to seek out a moderate standard of living or breaking the law by taking advantage of impoverished people to improve your profit margin?

One of the problems with the older strains of stem cells in US research is that they often caused cancer in experimental mice. Going from undifferentiated to rapidly differentiating. When you think about those results this finding makes intuitive sense but I am also not a biologist, at least not full time.

Certainly some sort of behavioral test. Blind mice and mice with vision behave differently since they respond to different stimuli. It's just another part of their line of work. That said, we really need to see the primary journal article to know what sort of test they used and if it was adequate.

  9. Re:Silly Punishment on BitTorrent Site Admin Sent To Prison · · Score: 1

Why should white collar criminals be imprisoned? Once again it depends on what you think the purpose of encarceration is. I think prison sentences serve two purposes, to punish and to offer rehabilitation. I think white collar criminals need to be punished and rehabilitated just as much as a guy who mugs joggers late at night. Take Kenneth Lay as a great example. He damaged many more lives than virtually anyone currently in prison for violent crimes. I think it would be helpful to punish Lay and have him undergo some sort of rehabilitation classes focused on why what he did was wrong. I think the sentiment to not punish white collar criminals the same way we punish criminals commiting violent crimes is classist. There are more ways to harm people than shoving them. There are more ways to be a detriment to society than being a known threat to commit violent crime on a regular basis. Also if we fail to properly punish white collar criminals it reinforces the idea that white collar crime is acceptable. Do you really want to live in a society where people feel like it is okay to embezzle tons of money and the worst thing that will happen is dealing with a civil lawsuit? I cannot think of a reason not to punish white collar criminals with jail time. I think the root of the sentiment is that it is easier for most /. readers to identify with white collar criminals than criminals who commit violent crimes. Yet that does not get around the fact that even white collar criminals are hurting others and are not only detrimental to society but can often have much greater effects than violent criminals. I think a white collar criminal is much more deserving of jail time than a guy who is caught in possession of mairjuana or even in possession of cocaine. Especially small amounts of drugs that are likely for personal use.

Pure conjecture. It is not inconceivable that despite Einstein's vast contributions to science that he worried about interpersonal issues as the end of his life was emminent. However I think the most important questions are: what are our individual priorities in life (we do all vary in ambition levels)? Will we actually look back on our lives with regret? And perhaps most importantly if we enjoy our lives at the moment will it matter that in our last moments we may somehow forget that joy and "accidently" regret?

That sounds like cultural relativism and cultural relativism does not work. The world community should not respect large scale, atrocious violations of human rights like slavery in the antebellum south. For example if the international community takes a stance of cultural relativism the international community should take no action when Country X engages in a process of genocide against an ethnic minority. Is the right thing to do say the majority has a right to massacre the minority in Country X because it is their country and no one else should step in? I think the answer is a clear no.

I have a lot friends, it is fun to play video games but they do not strike me as the type of activity it is worth ditching my friends for. Reading a book is worthwhile as an alternative to hanging out with my friends. If I am playing a video game I am prone to ask myself why I am not doing something social. Playing games with other people is fun even if it is a single player game like God of War where you have to sacrifice some time at the controller for hanging out with a buddy. Also you are an alcoholic when you drink alone while playing games versus having awesome fun when you drink with your friends while playing games.

Here's why I am completely uninterested in your movie: As another poster stated, many people make similar trips on bikes. In fact one of my friends at school once biked across America. Typically no one makes a movie about these journeys and/or no one markets a movie about these journeys. It seems kind of less than genuine that these two guys on break from their corporate lives are travelling across the US on vehicles with a corporate vibe, with corporate sponsorship and their movie is getting corporate marketing. Even if their intent began very genuine it is hard to feel like these two are adventurous and interesting. Especially when know people who have made a similar trip, put in more effort by doing it on a bike and were not celebrated. It's like the peak of these guys getting away from a spoiled upper middle class life is in actuality not getting away from it at all. Not that I'm not spoiled and upper middle class as well but at least I can be honest about it. Whereas these guys don't appear to be honest with themselves. The worst offense is the cut in the trailer where one man perilously states they may not make it all the way. What exactly is their obstacle? Running out of money? If so it's because of their own poor planning.
