Having lost 3 drives (two of which were seagate 7200.11's surprise surprise) over the last 5 years which were part of my RAID1 array (first 200GB of four different disks in RAID1 arrays for / and/home) I can definitely say that RAID1 was far far less headache than losing all my stuff - pictures, documents, thesis - and website & database, and having to reinstall.
RAID1 is so unbelievably "worth it" that I would never consider anything less.
As for raid controllers, I can't speak to that, I've always just used mdadm
Agreed; and engineering? Good luck doing that on your own as a hobby. Half of the point (or more?) of an engineering degree is to teach you a process and how to work in teams.
Agreed, as a fellow Canadian (and Albertan) I can say that a good set of winter tyres and some caution are about all you need; typically on my commutes after bad snowstorms you see more SUV's and trucks in the ditch than anybody else, as those guys are the ones who figure "oh I have a truck, I can just keep driving like normal!" and then end up in the ditch.
In many cases having a truck/SUV is more likely to put you in the ditch due to overconfidence than it is to help you.
Actually I disagree with this; I'm still driving a 1986 Mercury Grand Marquis (almost as old as I am!), an old gas guzzler to be sure -- but it's more fuel efficient than *many* SUV's out there; I'm getting about 21 mpg average, yet this is *much* better than my parents 2002 escalade (the internet says a combined total of 12 mpg) or many other SUV's on the road.
Anyway the point is, even those old gas guzzlers are better than most SUV's these days..
Corrosion can either be designed for or water can be filtered or distilled, if it really comes down to a "we can't do nuclear because of a lack of fresh water" problem.
I'm not sure if you noticed, but our planet's surface is 70% water.
Would it be more of a concern if we said "Also the huge amounts of dirt required to run a nuclear plant"?
Fresh water may be an issue in the future, but who says you have to use fresh water? Most of the population of the planet lives pretty close to the ocean.
I've also switched to XFCE, and agree it's much cleaner; i can even use the few gnome applets that i really liked better than xfce's with the gnome-applet menu item; (gnome's clock and it's system monitor are both superior to any of XFCE's imho - especially the ability to have a unix-time clock). But it's just a little more light weight and feels 'cleaner'.
This; when you've worked on an article over a month or so with a dozen people to make it better, and then random editors delete it for notability, it really turns you off from doing anything more...
Well, the current definition of being spherical and clearing its local neighbourhood (and being in orbit of the star, not another planet), is a pretty good one I think anyway.

Legally Expedited Government Intervention Satisfying Lobbyists And Their Interests Ostensibly Nationalistically ?

Those of us discouraged from going into IT went into engineering instead.

inflation is a % per year; that makes it an exponential function
Except Adblock Plus in Chrome doesn't block YouTube ads which is insanely annoying.
This is why you go to a library or university or other public terminal, create a new hotmail | gmail | whatever address and send it from there.

Dissolve the metal off the platters in concentrated sulphuric acid.
You could measure his capacitance...
We should shorten the copyright term to around 14 years...

Or.... make more good music? Wasn't that the purpose of copyright in the first place?

Who uses a window manager when you have the CLI! :)
Probably to shoot down any trees that try flying at his house...

Heck I'd go on that if it went to 300+ feet...

Maybe they should say they "orientatificationized" it!
// $gets_green_card = ( rand()/rand_max() < $green_cards_to_give_away / $total_applicants ? true : false); //randomly choose applicant //choose from an array!
$gets_green_card = ( in_array($applicant_name, $array_of_my_friends_to_give_green_cards) ? true : false);
That sort of programming error? what sort of error are we talking about here?
I believe you're mistaken; the world was created Last Thursday, with all the apparent trappings of a world much older!
Last Thursdayism
Maybe slashdot can put an XP EOL Countdown Clock in the top bar? :)
