And then, around 1998, I stopped. Not because I started "stealing" it. And not because I started listening to streaming music. I stopped because I had enough music. Enough music to fill a 100 GB iPod. If I listened to it continuously I'd be playing music for weeks without hearing a repeat. Why in the world would I buy any more?
As it is now I'll occasionally run across an old song I haven't heard for years. And wonder why. Buying more music, especially music that isn't as compelling to me as the old stuff, would be a waste of money.
You know, you can do both... I picked one to start. And 1% of the US budget is still a lot. A billion here, a billion there, pretty soon we'll be talking about real money...
Anyway, we're drifting from the topic at hand (high speed rail) so I'll just shut up now.
I think the world pretty much got along before the Americans started handing out candy and it will continue to do so if we stop. Just because we can't envision the world running just fine without our influence doesn't mean it wouldn't do so. It might even spur other countries to pick up the slack. It's only the (often irrational) fears of Americans that lead us to think that our "enemies" will act in our absence. For some value of "enemy" as that seems to change every few years...
Not all influence has to be purchased. And not all of it involves direct transfers of money. Why not ask the Egyptians how they feel about US foreign aid, as it was bestowed upon them in the form of tear gas canisters "Made in the USA"?
Eliminating foreign aid for a few years places a premium on diplomacy. Which should always be our first option in any case. Winning friends and influencing people is about more than giving them money. If you have to pay them to get them to like you, were they ever really your friends in the first place?
You are aware that the problem is precisely because the rails are owned by private companies? Specifically the freight companies. If a passenger train has to traverse the same route as a freight train, freight gets priority and the passenger train sits. Any high speed rail system has to come with a new right of way or it's doomed to failure. The President's proposal is also likely doomed because he doesn't specify how it should be paid for--even the most reasonable proposal is doomed without a viable payment plan.
The US is beyond bankrupt. If it wants to do new and useful things it needs to find a way to cull some of the old, outdated things and find new sources of revenue. If I were in the executive branch and responsible for helping to craft the budget one of the things I would propose is a 5 to 10-year moratorium on all foreign aid. Get your own house in order before you incur any more debt on the behalf of others...
Why would Apple want to publish a plan if they have one? The top executives who aren't in line to move up will become dissatisfied and will look for opportunities elsewhere. The executives who are tapped won't have a timetable to move up, and will be sniped at and sabotaged by the executives who aren't in line in the hopes of improving their positions. It's a recipe for internal dissent and distraction.
Apple is right and should resist this call to appoint a successor. If the shareholders don't like it they always have the option of selling their shares.
Wasn't Android the result of Google's purchase of a smaller company? Given that it's unlikely Eric Schmidt had any say in the initial technology choices behind Android.
Perhaps this is why Apple is moving to Qualcomm for future iPhone chips, starting with the CDMA iPhone for Verizon and other carriers. (This has been widely reported; I first saw it on Engadget.) This will almost certainly continue with iPhone 5.
Interesting how this "leak" occurred the same day analysts at Goldman Sachs castigated Microsoft for not having a tablet strategy. The market is starting to awaken to Ballmer's utter lack of vision and it won't be long before Microsoft starts to pay for it. Well, more than they've already paid by having a stagnant stock price for the past 10 years.
Yes, Congress passed a law banning embryonic research. President Bush also issued at least two executive orders limiting research. President Obama still needs to issue an order to rescind the earlier ones, which is what I believed he had done. If the court finds Obama's order in conflict with existing law, whither the Bush orders?
Papermaster left IBM for Apple. In fact, IBM sued to keep him, saying he had trade secrets that shouldn't be shared. Apple had to wait a few months to get him because of this suit. Ironic that after fighting to get him they're dumping him so soon. If he's the head honcho responsible for the antenna problem (assuming it exists) you have to applaud Apple for holding people responsible for their failures. Are you paying attention Microsoft?
Well, this sort of thing is the reason why so many content providers are reluctant to move to HTML5 and away from Flash. When they talk about the additional capabilities that Flash has, this is what they mean. The ability to track your usage and gather information about you. (and the back room deals Adobe cuts along the way to deliver this data) Yet people clamor for Flash on their mobile phones.
Say what you will about Apple, in this case they're absolutely right. Perhaps not for the right reasons, but still. The enemy of my enemy is my friend and all that.
No program necessary to do this. Just remove ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/#SharedObjects. Set up a cron job or an Automator script to do it hourly.
I agree completely, it's a bad mistake. But you have to learn to think like a Congress-person. The money isn't being wasted. It's buying jobs in your constituency just before an election. The good of the organization or the country be damned. It's all about self preservation-- and by self preservation I mean re-election.

No, they will call it Stratos. It predates Bespin, and it's residents are clearly outnumbered by the billions of Troglytes doing all the real work.

Not only that, the tie was purple, not pink. You know, the color you get when you mix red and blue?

Scratch that. The Anonymous Coward following my post needs to be modded up.

Printers... is there nothing they can't do?
Isn't that a synonym for crapper? Where Symbian's market share seems to be headed?
Is that the biggest rat is deserting the sinking ship.
Since when has merit had anything to do with someone lodging a complaint?
Exactly what I was thinking. Expect a lawsuit and/or trade complaint from AMD, TI and SanDisk in 3...2...1...
"I like our strategy. I like it a lot." Funerals aside, how's that working out for you Steve?

I suppose the devil is in the details.

About 11 years too late. But at least we now know what the Mayan hype was all about. Say goodbye to the moon in 2012.
Just in case... :-)
