He reads like a neo-Platonic philosopher on hallucinogens.
Funny you should mention that. I'm in the middle of Pynchon's Against the Day and am thoroughly loving it. Of course, Pynchon isn't exactly intending his writing to be taken too seriously...
Case in point: This person greeted the Cohen by raising his left hand, then spreading the fingers two and two away from the thumb so as to form the Hebrew letter shin, signifying the initial letter of one of the pre-Mosaic (that is, plural) names of God, which may never be spoken.
"Basically wishing long life and prosperity," explained the Cohen, answering with the same gesture.
Seriously. I'm not sure I believe that's what was in his laptop. It almost looks like he rolled up the crap he found under his bed and dropped it onto his computer before taking the picture. I mean, isn't the dust that cakes up inside a computer usually a whole lot less billowy? Especially considering all of that was supposedly in a flat/narrow space.
So he added some memory and doubled his hard drive size (I don't really count replacing the keyboard as an "upgrade"). He made no mention of the battery, which any 5 year old laptop will need a new one of. That in itself will be about 50-75% of his $125 upgrade budget.
Because I wasn't his boss at the time (I became it later). At the time I asked both him and our boss if we had a decent recovery plan in place. I was assured by both that there was. That's really all I could do. If you want to think otherwise, by all means, do. But don't tell me that I'm "being an arrogant jerk and revelling in the mistakes of others." I was one of the ones who got my ass reamed over that mistake even though I had nothing to do with it.
I used to work with a guy who did the "useless backup" thing. He set up an automated backup system that encrypted the files to tape. It ran fine for a long while. But when we had a server failure and needed to recover from the backup tapes, he couldn't remember what the decryption password was. All he could do was sit there saying "I remember that it was a good one." I just wanted to smack him...
yes, I'll just plug my laptop into a USB port to charge it, and...
Think about it this way--with a USB cable plugged into a free USB port and the other end plugged into the USB-styled powerport, you can carry your laptop around forever and never run out of power! I think the Chinese are onto something there...
1) I'd lose my job - The warehouse would start to question why I always had my Jeep full of boxes and barrels to ship out to CA, and would complain about the shipping charges.
Why would you be shipping them out to California? The RIAA is located in DC.
I know someone who does temp music for films. He puts pre-existing music and songs to the rough cuts of the movies to help pad them out for screenings and whatnot. This is to ensure that the correct tension and feeling are created during key scenes. According to him, some of the less-than-honest composer types will simply lift the music that he's chosen for the temp cuts, and then change a few intervals here and there to get around any plagiarism issues.
From this page on Open Firmware passwords, they list the following: Blocks the ability to use the "C" key to start up from an optical disc.
Blocks the ability to use the "N" key to start up from a NetBoot server.
Blocks the ability to use the "T" key to start up in Target Disk Mode (on computers that offer this feature).
I wonder if the missing U has something to do with those... : p
What's funny is reading the posts of some of those richer-than-FSM types that frequent there. Other people instantly defer to them on subjects it's clear they know very little about. I mean, since they can afford to spend way too much money on a hobby, they clearly have intimate knowledge of the tech behind it, right? : p I'm not saying I'm an A/V genius (though I also don't try to present myself as one), but I can easily spot someone who's just rehashing the made up BS that was told to him by the salesguy that just sold him his isotopically pure copper ethernet cable at a 5000% markup...
Increasing the bitrate beyond a certain point brings diminishing returns.
Quite true. But for 1080p video encoded with either H.264 or VC-1, the resulting filesize (for an average length movie) is generally in the 20-25GB range. Taking it above that doesn't yield much better results. Taking it below that begins to compromise the video quality.
Good thing this is only in the UK, otherwise the USPS might start getting worried about the competition.
I have been waiting for a built-in Windows National Threat Advisory widget for so long.
Ooooh! And they can have it automatically change the desktop background color or something, too!
I recently ordered one of these maps for my office. I'm still waiting to get it framed, so it's not hanging yet, but it is a nice projection.

This article applies to those who have the new disorder, multitasking deficit disorder.
Uh oh. I think I might have that. Is there something I can take for it?
I would, but like the other residents of the District of Columbia, we don't get a say in the matter.

I imagine it's generated (DNRTFA), but it sounds a lot like a violin.
I'm guessing you haven't heard too many violins in your life if that's what you think they sound like...

Anybody know the reason for this?

Anyone know how many times launch pad 39A has been used for previous shuttle/rocket launches?
