I love it when I come across someone who actually shows enough interest in a subject to learn something about it. Congrats to your old guy at work. I hope he enjoys his retirement. : )
I useta screw with our old TV by playing with a slinky. Every now and then the channel would change or it would turn off. I'm sure the volume would change from time to time, too, but it would only do it by a notch or two, and this was the days before onscreen volume indicators...
Which wouldn't be an issue if "artists" didn't think blindly that louder is better, period.
It's often not the artist that makes this decision. Rather, it's whoever does the mastering that decides this. Sure, the label and artist sign off on it, but remember that the artist's ears are usually pretty shot from playing live music day in and day out. And the label doesn't want to have to pay to have it done again.
I know I've seen various rekkids put out by Merge and Matador Records that had stickers on the front offering exactly this sort of thing. The thing is that I saw those albums about 1-2 years ago. This isn't exactly new...
I'm in WA, and I have Comcast's Motorola DVR boxes with the MS Interface. All the symptoms with the UI that you described are familiar to me with the MS interface. I bet it's just as much the Motorola hardware to blame.
Not surprisingly, I sometimes encounter similar issues with Windows MCE. Thankfully I only use that for watching TV in HD or for watching the occasional downloaded video, so it's not like I deal with it on a daily basis. My TiVo doesn't do this, though...
Sure, he probably googled most of it, but he actually felt the need to learn more instead of just scratching his head and offering me beer to fix his problem. I do miss the beer though:(
Ahhh, yes, when "free as in beer" means the end of free beer...
I haven't watched BSG, but by all accounts it's an excellent show. I'm sure I will get around to watching it one of these days. That said, I'm in the very small camp of people that believes that good shows should end their run early. Yeah, it sucks that the show is over, but at least it'll end while the writing was still good and well before it jumped the shark. One thing that I can't stand seeing is a show that just keeps on going and going until it simply can't gasp for breath anymore. Good shows should die young, imho.
So according to him it wasn't the 102 documented instances of misbehavior that were presented to him before the Googling that did him in. It was the Googling that confirmed his pattern of behavior that did him in...Give me a break, guy. Not to mention, with a resume like that, he's bound to be hired as CEO for some major pharmaceutical company or something...

website: noun: a doorway to a series of tubes
So these "websites" are sort of like the lid to my toilet?
So what do we buy if we want to kill babies?
I saw a hot deal on the Bay-B Shred-O-Matic the other day...
Is your Windows Update not infected yet? Click here to infect it!
I burn plenty of calories in front of my PC every day...
No, you're talking about someone who pays 60 bucks a year for AV software--the original calculation stands... ;)

We must outlaw candles immediately, since pirates can use the wax contained in them to make copies of these vinyls. Only a pirate would own a candle!
With CDs? What, you buy the CD and they'll let you download mp3s? If I have the CD, I'll encode it myself...

The game's been opensourced for awhile, so a Mario mod shouldn't be that hard to do...
Interesting comments from Bungie, considering one of their early projects was porting the side-scrolling platform game Abuse to the Mac...
I take it you support giving nuclear weapons to all nations on the planet, too? The exact same argument can be made there.
Gotta start teaching them to be scared at an early age, y'know...
What, you've never seen an owl before?
You're assuming that someone out there will run around and put up lots of outdoor webcams so that we can watch from our flooded basements...

Dead people being sued for not living.
I hope those pesky dead people get sentenced to a bunch of community service.
They also want control over your "digital hole". Where do I sign up?
They can have as much control of my digi. hole as they want, just as long as they don't go after my anal. hole.

What platform did you play it on? Neither my PC nor my GameCube had anything like what you describe...
My thoughts, too. Hit and Run was a pretty decent game.
