    Speaking of broken analogies... you do realize that NASA doesn't walk up and down the space shuttle lot just outside of town and say "hmmm... can you have that one ready by next week?"... right?

    If a relationship is to the point of a person needing to track their significant other's movements with a GPS device, why do people even bother continuing the relationship?

    Because proof of guilt is important.

    Well, generally when I start bitching that my car is too old, I replace it. I don't get rid of the car and then sit around at home for at least 5 years figuring out what my next car will be.

    You would if you were commissioning for it to be built for a pricetag in the millions.

    You mean besides the hordes of contrarian Slashdotters looking for the word Insightful to appear next to their posts? Heh.

    Well, I wouldn't bother trying to argue with that. I know that I'm more apt to design and implement my scripts a little more thoughtfully when I know somebody else is likely to pick them up and work on them. Unless you suffer from 'code fright' it's difficult to picture a scenario where this wouldn't be preferred.

    Take your own advice. My questions were specifically about what you said. Now, here are the questions you still haven't satisfactorily answered:

    - Why would any non-established artist think they could suddenly market themselves?

    - Why would anybody give them a loan?

    - Why would this be more appealing than a contract with the RIAA that says "We'll handle that for you, you focus on being good at what you do"?

    So could you please read my questions in their entirety instead of picking out the soundbites that you want to rip apart?

    With the ability to distribute online so easily these days, I don't know why artists even bother with major labels anymore.

    Publishing != Marketing.

    On this point we don't disagree. The way the gov't handled post-911 was terrible.

    The big thing is I don't think we should suddenly funnel that money into just one other project. Split it up. Space program, cancer research, quit cutting medicare and social security, etc. But that's a discussion about better uses for badly spent money. An effective anti-terrorism department would be worthwhile. We don't need another attack like that and I'm sure our Allies would have liked to have had their attacks prevented.

    Used game shops make money on each sale. But they didn't make the game. Game authors get nothing. That is why it's bad. Keep that up, and soon nobody will create anything anymore.

    Heh. I just have this image in my head of an insanely popular game only selling 1,000 copies, and lots and lots of people spend years patiently waiting for one of those copies to become available at a used game store.

    Games are spread amongst an incredibly diverse range of tastes (unless you're a PC gamer, then your taste is just shoot-em-ups... ;) ), there is no 'only on smartphones' in the future of the video game market. The concept of it even becoming a majority of the marketshare is far-fetched. It's like predicting the death of pizza because cheeseburgers became available cheaply on every city block.

    If the company simply folds, they are more likely to carry their promises.

    Eh I don't think they will. Not because I'm a know-it-all jerk, but because I want to make sure that when I buy a game from them, I have to feel the price is what I consider to be a six-month rental. In other words, I won't pay $60 for a game there, but I don't mind paying something like $20 for Portal if I know I'll play and probably beat it in the short term.

    Don't treat the DRM promise as anything but marketing.

    Steam may be DRM, but they're incredibly smart in that they've made getting and playing content easier than BitTorrent and cracking. Time and time again, people have pointed out that this is the only way to compete with copyright violation, and the success of Steam is proof in the pudding.

    If you ever run across the headline "Steam shutting its doors", make a point to read the comments then.

    Pity that was modded down, there's a point hiding in there. Every story that even lightly touches on Facebook raises a complaint about people hate social networking and justify it by whining about how they assume others misuse it.

    Given the flimsy rationale and the ... erm... Slashdottian stereotype, I'm inclined to think that the real problem is that you don't like having it rubbed in your face that somebody else has friends and a social life. Understandable, but seriously, this "I'm your superior" attitude ain't helpin.
