My bad, my reading comprehension is bad today. You're right, they are talking about subscription of apps.
Welcome to the future, folks. Software companies feel as though they don't generate stable enough revenue through one-time sales. They feel they should share the success you endure with the software you use.
No, it doesn't. It depends on which software you're using. For quite a few people, Linux is anywhere from adequate to awesome because of software support. For quite a few others, including myself, the Linux support either isn't there or it's not as strong. In my case there's a large speed hit because the developers have prioritized Windows over Linux.
First-time-configuration isn't even an issue with Linux adoption.
Hopefully this is a temporary problem/solution because Netflix is effectively shutting off Potential New Customers. "Thanks for joining the modern internet - sorry we can't service you today"
This isn't really Netflix's rule, rather it comes down from the content producers selling their videos to Netflix. So long as they feel the need to geo-locator, Netflix will as well.
Well that and Linux isn't exactly a great Windows alternative. The Windows 10 silliness really would be a grand opportunity for Apple to release a cheaper Mac Mini.
Surely the Invisible Hand(TM) of the Free Market(C) in the only Free(tm) country in the world will solve this problem?
Libertarians don't keep their eyes open during events like this. They screw them shut and go "Oh it's still partially regulated and that's actually the problem". At face value I don't actually hate their philosophy, it's just the blanket denial of the way human beings actually operate. Which is weird because their argument against communism IS that it falls apart because human beings operate they way they do.
Sorry about my semi-off-topic rant, I'm just amazed at the things people say despite being shown stories like this.
Yes, Microsoft is being too aggressive, however I feel this is less important than finding out what is being sent via the telemetry service. I will not use Windows 10 because many of the projects I work on are under NDA. How do I know Windows isn't sending out info to the mothership that, in essence, violates that NDA? What if Windows is sending a list of all the folders on my hard-drive? An employee of theirs might see that and go "Hey, this guy is working on the Nintendo NX*! I'm going to post this to the rumors sites!" That's the sort of thing that could get me, my colleagues, and the companies I work for in trouble.
* I am not working on anything Nintendo related, I just plucked that example out of the air.
I'm semi-self taught. I had an Atari computer as a kid and enjoyed fritting about in BASIC. In high school I took a programming course that taught Pascal. Once I became an office drone I experimented with Visual Basic to do Excel macros, then I moved to PHP to work on my website, then Javascript to automate tasks in Photoshop, now I work in Python quite a bit. I'm not a developer, though, I'm somewhat of a generalist scripter (variables, arrays, if/thens, while loops, etc, are practically universal) who uses that skill to make myself and my coworkers more productive via tools/macros in our tools of the trade.
From that point of view I certainly do understand at least introducing students to programming. (not to an extreme, though). I was forced to take a semester of Latin in high school. I would never ever have taken that willingly, but having gone through it I can see that in another life I might have pursued linguistics. Who knew?
I do agree with your point about skipping stories you aren't interested in. I also agree that Slashdot *should* heavily cover this story so other companies don't get the idea they should follow MS's example.
That said, Slashdot is most certainly *not* free. It is ad-supported. For that reason he does actually have a right to bitch.
We in America are only now really seeing what Islam really is... We will see more crimes like this from Muslims. Look at the UK and Germany, where it's now illegal to call this stuff out or face charges of hate speech.
You do realize there are over 3 million Muslims in the United States, right?
Do you understand how much we Amercians are embarrassing ourselves? I shudder to think of what our reputation will be like overseas (or even at our borders) once we've finished voting.

Shush. That amount is only horrible when Apple does it, even if the developers do end up making more money than with Google for it.
Pretty sure they're talking about Netflix, Hulu, HBO, etc.
Depends on which Linux you're talking about -

Burned by how many right-wing hotheads that don't even run their memes past Snopes.com before posting. Let's do another study on a non-election year.

More bastardization of the word 'censored'.
I would take a hit in productivity.
Gee, it's almost as if their frustration is from not having adequate alternatives.
There are a *lot* of people who would lose important software in that move. Be mindful of that if you're going to be opportunistic.

Seeing as how many ISPs (in the US) are practically monopolies in their area, yes it does matter.
The manufacturers originally wanted to use Linux but were unable to overcome the issue of bad drivers.

I give 0 fucks about whether we're "embarassing ourselves"; it's all about whether we're happy and successful. Reputation barely figures into that.
Ugh. Common American ignorance bites us again.
Today I learned that SJW means 'civility'.

Because Slashdot spins the ad-counter while we debate whether or not Musk is an asshole.
Nearly 1 In 4 People Abandon Mobile Apps After Only One Use...
How do they do that without using up all the space on their phone?
