    I never said "its not going to work" "the navy doesnt have skilled technicians" or anything of the sort.
    I simply said that they will need to have support, from Redhat, IBM, or whatever vendor sells support for open source products that they will use.

    I didn't say they were unable to be trained.
    My point is, the software is not the only costs associated. Support contracts from vendors can be huge.

    I dont think the navy will settle for:
    "Man, this thing doesnt work"
    "Uhhh, post a question on the fourm, and hope you hear back"

    Why do you assume that open source projects will make the Navy cost effective?
    Open source != free
    they will have to endure the cost of installation, training, etc. No way can they do that efficiently!

    I would start with figuring out what it would cost to fix broken systems, downtime, etc.

    Then you can at least put a price on not being secure, and let management make a somewhat informed decision.

    Wasn't there a TI 92? I remember a classmate having one in college. It seemed really bulky and not many people were impressed.
    I remember it not being any better than the TI 85, at least for that class.

    The cool thing about MIT is that they own the entire 18.0.0.0/8 Class A address space, so every device on campus has a public IP.
    And all computers (even student machines) are connected directly to the Internet - no NAT, no firewall, no protocol limitations, no bandwidth caps.


    how is that a 'cool' thing?
    I realize most students at MIT can probably secure themselves, but an institution not enforcing a firewall or NATs is asking for trouble.

    what about wired sensors? The infrastructure is already in place. When the sensors stop sending data, the power must be down at that location. It would be easy to map out which sensors arent responding.

    So, If someone was suing my company, I too would probably come up with some "statistics" that showed I was actually helping them. Not that I don't believe in google's "do no evil", but no company really thinks THEY are doing evil, not even Philip Morris, they just provide what the customer wants.
