I never said "its not going to work" "the navy doesnt have skilled technicians" or anything of the sort.
I simply said that they will need to have support, from Redhat, IBM, or whatever vendor sells support for open source products that they will use.
Why do you assume that open source projects will make the Navy cost effective?
Open source != free
they will have to endure the cost of installation, training, etc. No way can they do that efficiently!
Wasn't there a TI 92? I remember a classmate having one in college. It seemed really bulky and not many people were impressed.
I remember it not being any better than the TI 85, at least for that class.
The cool thing about MIT is that they own the entire 18.0.0.0/8 Class A address space, so every device on campus has a public IP.
And all computers (even student machines) are connected directly to the Internet - no NAT, no firewall, no protocol limitations, no bandwidth caps.
how is that a 'cool' thing? I realize most students at MIT can probably secure themselves, but an institution not enforcing a firewall or NATs is asking for trouble.
When you say "eskimo", you're just as clueful as any stupid redneck who says "nigger". And you deserve as well to be beaten-up.
So you are saying Eskimo Pie is like a nigger pie?
Me:"Mmm, Eskimo Pie!!"
Native Alaskan-American: "Lets get him!!!"
Most of these are rated "Low" for short term impact. So why do I need to know about them next year?
So when they finally do get well known and publicized, we can all say its a dupe, and post links to this story!
what about wired sensors? The infrastructure is already in place. When the sensors stop sending data, the power must be down at that location. It would be easy to map out which sensors arent responding.
So, If someone was suing my company, I too would probably come up with some "statistics" that showed I was actually helping them.
Not that I don't believe in google's "do no evil", but no company really thinks THEY are doing evil, not even Philip Morris, they just provide what the customer wants.

I didn't say they were unable to be trained.
My point is, the software is not the only costs associated. Support contracts from vendors can be huge.
I dont think the navy will settle for:
"Man, this thing doesnt work"
"Uhhh, post a question on the fourm, and hope you hear back"

That would be true, if /.'ers actually read TFA.
I would start with figuring out what it would cost to fix broken systems, downtime, etc.
Then you can at least put a price on not being secure, and let management make a somewhat informed decision.
Wow, they have future documentation on research. Did that research include time travel?!?!
The DEA will crush this new threat of drug carriers!!!

What is "online population"? people online at a given time, people who have ever been "online"? Active ISP subscriptions?
I am "sorry" for all of the quotes
I'm sure if that happens, we can just use Indian or Chinese molecules.
I bet they would be happy to do it, and they wont even slow down!

You guys are behind, I've been downloading since Windows 95 by a variety of methods:
IRC, ftp, http, and torrents.

Cartoons + Star Trek? Man, this is going to be the nerdiest show ever.
With this knowledge, no one will be able to touch my son's boat at the next Boy Scout's boat race!!!
Layer of Bubbles? How can Michael Jackson decrease fuel consumption.
At least we're not identified as SPAM and just tossed away.

I've always thought, why dont they give AIDS to people with Leukemia.
Too many white blood cells + weak immune system = balance?
