    So in other words, you don't really know if it is more secure or not. You claimed it took extra work to make Windows more secure. The general problems with Windows security hasn't been because of backdoors put in by Microsoft.

    Now, installing random software and having unpatched software with security flaws, that's a problem that both operating systems have in common.

    That's only one of the reasons I use Linux. Why would I go out of my way to use an OS that takes extra work to secure?

    What distribution do you use? Could you describe, precisely, in what way it is more secure than Windows 7?

    The amusing thing about your post is you just confirmed what he said. You didn't get infected by just hooking up to the Net (as was the case in the old days -- no browsing required), and you fell into the category of an outdated Adobe product. You were even saved by Microsoft Security Essentials.

    What more do you want? By the way, as for Adobe Reader, disable browser integration. Seriously. I'm also pretty sure the latest Reader products check for updates automatically, so if you're running an older product with known and fixed bugs, what's your excuse?

    It's not software patents that are being asserted.

    Yes, it is, and that's why we're having this discussion. IBM listed patents that they said Hercules was in violation of. Nothing you said changes any of that. This is just a fact of the case.

    If, by "neither is it so innocent", you mean the position of the company attempting to distribute IBM software without a valid license, then I'd say you're right.

    I mean IBM is asserting it's patents via saber-rattling. They didn't have to do that. They did. They should be held accountable for it. If they were upset about copyright violation, then that's what they should complain about. By throwing around their patents, either via actual lawsuit or threat of one, then they hurt any software that may be in violation of those patents.

    Last I checked, I bought a PS3 specifically to support Sony for being so open minded on the PS2 and PS3 as to include Linux support at all.

    And they explicitly removed the Linux option, which was one of the reasons you bought the device.

    Also for not restricting which USB devices or hard drives I use with their products and sticking to open standards instead.

    Check your User Agreement for the PlayStation Network. You are only allowed to use Sony approved and licensed devices.

    I switched from a 360 to a PS3 about a year ago, but decided I've had enough. From the Gestapo tactics against Geohot and anybody he may have associated with, to not being able to use the speaker out on my monitor when renting a movie, to stupid User Agreements that run on for pages and pages long just to play a fucking game, I've finally had enough.

    Not one more fucking dime for Sony. Fuck Microsoft and Nintendo, too. They're both dicks in their own ways. I'll hack my PS3 hardware, not to pirate games, but to tinker with. I'm sure the homebrew scene for PS3 is going to blossom.

    Try being at least a little honest.

    I'm being completely honest. I went into this situation knowing nothing, and did a tiny bit of research. I've since read a little more. You are right the situation is not as one-sided as described, but neither is it so innocent.

    They gave their reasons for declining: there is nothing innovative in what you are doing, it provides no benefit to IBM, and IBM is not going to license it's software to run on something that IBM feels infringes their IP.

    That's fine, but now you are completely downplaying the "infringes their IP" part. If IBM doesn't want to be attacked along these lines then they should stop asserting their patents against open source software (and preferably all software in general, as these software patents stink).

    I'm not so sure that's worth money, but I was referring to Technocrat in particular. The upthread comment was:

    Though I suppose if a few hundred or couple of thousand dollars is the amount in question, then yes, that's a fairly cheap price for integrity.

    SCO later down the line chose to pick on IBM, Groklaw pre-dated that particular decision.

    Linux of 2003 was a world away from Android of 2011.

    Not really. Java is one of the world's biggest programming languages. The question is will it be in proprietary control of Oracle, or can it be freely forked? If it can't be forked, it's not open source.

    IBM has not launched any lawsuits against anyone for supporting Hercules, they just declined to SUPPORT or license their software for use on Hercules.

The letter is a brusque half-page, but was sent with nine additional pages that list a "non-exhaustive" selection of patents that IBM believes are infringed by the open source emulator."

    One of the reasons they gave for not supporting Hercules was that they feel Hercules infringes on their patents, but that is far different from suing someone.

    Sending threatening letters with a clear intention to sue is nearly as bad. There's no way somebody who is a friend of open source would defend this action from IBM. You're defending a rotten position.

    As long as its peasant on peasant at least here cops don't give a fuck, and traveling all over the south I have seen nothing to think it is ANY different anywhere else.

    Move out of the South. My experience with the police in the Northeast hasn't been anything like you've described. I'm sure there are bad cops out there, but generally the ones I've had personal experience with have been honest cops doing their jobs.

    Race is a social construct. This is junior high school level stuff. Should have stayed in school, man.

    You shouldn't believe everything your teachers tell you. Race goes far beyond just "social construct". For example, doctors will often take race into account when practicing medicine.

    There is no perfect classification system for biological diversity, even when you aren't talking about the human species (and "species" is another word that is hard to pin down). Categorization is messy.

    Not sure about you but I get mod points at 15 points a whack, sometimes twice a week.

    This is entirely the problem, it varies extremely. Some users never get mod points. Some users get them all the time and far too many of them. Lately I've been getting 5 mod points now and then. I've had 10 and occasionally 15 before.

    There's just no consistency. It'd be nice if every established user got 3 every day that expired that day. I hate it when I don't feel like moderating and have mod points, and vice versa. I hate the enormous inequity in the system.

    You've got a convicted sex offender who has a laptop with encrypted files on it. Yeah..BIG red flags.

    I believe in personal liberty and freedom. Part of that belief is that I can try and keep stuff private. The idea that an encrypted file should be evidence of anything is preposterous in a country that supposedly stands for liberty.

    Want to keep your personal diary secret? Your sensitive financial info? In the modern world the best way to do that is to encrypt it.

    YouTube shows the top two comments. Yeah, those top two are often informative, but YouTube comments don't come anywhere close to a serious discussion site.

    What's cool about Slashdot is that when I browse at 3 or above, I'll usually get some nice back and forth views on the current topic. On sites like YouTube or Reddit, even if somebody has a good argument they'll get modded to oblivion (and sometimes even marked as spam).

    Of course, if all you want is comic relief or to read the prevailing groupthink, then the above doesn't matter to you.

    Slashdot has the worst rating system ever devised on the internet.

    It's actually one of the better ones.

    The "word" choices are extremely limited.

    The only category I really care about is "funny", because those I subtract 6 from.

    You can only rate when Slashcode allows you to.

    Look at sites like Reddit, where anybody can thumbs up or down on any comment. It's completely groupthink, and you don't get well stated, insightful, differing opinions both being modded up. There's also the problem of sockpuppet accounts and rigging to the voting.

    I do wish Slashdot was more liberal in it's vote allocation. Something like allowing 3 mod points per day for any established user would be nice. I'd also like for a downvote to cost 3 mod points, to help reduce groupthink.

    That's a good point, but there are alternatives. You can spread the message to all your contacts on the PS3. You can talk about it in game over voice. You can talk about it on PS3 forums.

    This denial of service isn't going to generate any sympathy to the case. It's just going to paint the opposition as a bunch of petty vandals.

    You could always make the argument to try something better in hopes of improvement. You have to make the case, though.

    The productivity difference between a horse and car is night and day. There isn't that much room to squeeze more productivity out of basic windowing functionality, and introducing drastic changes such as getting rid of basic buttons like minimize need a compelling argument. From what I've seen there isn't, and "try it for a week" ... no.

    I'll tell you what *I* really want fixed, and maybe my information is out of date, but the last time I tried to set my fonts and color preferences it was just a nightmare compared to the simplicity under any Windows before Vista (which I haven't used).

    I wish there was a Cancel button in the dialog windows in case I make a mistake.

    I wish I was able to right-click on a menu item and have Properties as an option.

    That's about all I can think of right now. I like Gnome 2 for it's subdued and pleasant icons, and basic functionality like the task bar and application launcher. The new approach is just too experimental and of unproven benefit to be foisting on the established userbase.

    That's a lot of bullshit. You can speak out against Sony on the Internet. You can urge people not to buy their products. You can not buy their products yourself.

    I own a PS3 and I wanted to play online today but I could not because of the DoS.

    I own a PS3 too. This past week, if you wanted to continue using their online network, you had to agree to a new Terms of Service with SNEA. I refuse to, and will never spend another dime on my PS3 again. I emailed support asking them to cancel my account. They owe me some funds from my "wallet" that is left over from renting movies -- I will make sure to get this money back.
