The original form? Were you there? Have you seen people making up shit all the time and claiming divine knowledge? Why did people believe in gods of lightning, war, human sacrafice, etc., but some "chosen" people were given the "true" message? What makes you think that particular message is true, but not others?
Too bad they can't just ask God for a clarification.

followed by space Outer space? "a space" is correct, since you can have things like "two spaces", which makes "an" correct in the way it was used. The "is" vs "are" has nothing to do with it.
So, while I agree on XML being way to heavy-wheight, I don't see JSON to be the solution, still being built on text. You make some good points. Do you have an alternative in mind?
Using ti to transfer data between systems is abuse, its a waste of bandwidth and storage space. You're mistaken. XML is designed for data transfer. Read The Annotated XML Specification. In particular:
1. XML shall be straightforwardly usable over the Internet.
This was not taken to mean that you could feed XML to the browsers of the day, but that the design would have regard at all times to the needs of distributed applications working on large-scale networks.
If a human isn't in on the loop, a more efficient protocol should be used to avoid the waste. The point is that even when humans normally aren't in the loop, they typically have to be when designing, implementing, and debugging when something goes wrong. If you've ever implemented binary specs or fixed width data formats vs XML, you can appreciate the difference.
Also from the annotated spec:
"6. XML documents should be human-legible and reasonably clear.
This goal was motivated simply by the perception that textual formats are more open, more useful, and more pleasant to work with than binary formats. One of the substantial benefits of XML is that no matter how bad a day your tools are having, you can always pull an XML document into Emacs or Notepad or whatever your favorite editor is, and get useful work done."
And finally:
"10. Terseness in XML markup is of minimal importance.
The historical reason for this goal is that the complexity and difficulty of SGML was greatly increased by its use of minimization, i.e. the omission of pieces of markup, in the interest of terseness. In the case of XML, whenever there was a conflict between conciseness and clarity, clarity won."
Umm, it's free speech to be critical of what others are saying, and to ask others to boycott because of the message. It's free speech to make fair use of what somebody has said to explain your criticism.
But the question you leave unanswered is, should we modify our foreign policies due to the views and actions of extremists? That's a question I'd like to see debated on the national stage, and one that most politicians don't even seem to be aware of. That's an Inconvenient Debate. Maybe Ron Paul should make a movie?
Well you said "tapped", you didn't say "filtered". Public key encryption still helps in this regard, because you can publically broadcast your key in as many ways as possible. You can put it on a web page, call everybody you know on the phone, print advertisements in newspapers, etc. The man in the middle would have to be in the middle everywhere. You can also build up a "web of trust".
but does it really or is that just a mathematical abstraction that lets us model its effects? Same question goes for all models of physics. Why do you pick on gravity and not quantum mechanics?
Only physicists can get away with crap like this. In any other field of science, this sort of voodoo bullshit would not be tolerated. What field of science doesn't have some voodoo bullshit? This kind of idle speculation exists in all fields.
ahahaha... Watching too much crappy anime?
I've always seen Yahoo as a bit of a "joke" search engine. There were always engines with better results like Altavista and HotBot in the early WWW days. I still can't understand how Yahoo has managed to succeed and thrive. Yahoo succeeded by being one of the first. HotBot came after Yahoo. When I started searching the web, I used AltaVista and Yahoo exclusively. Alta for finding specific information, and Yahoo for directory info. Then Google came along made both obsolete. But there still is that first mover advantage, explaining why Yahoo got so big.
I just want to reiterate that I think the zoo is ultimately responsible, since there's a reasonable expectation of containment. My "personal responsibility" wasn't aimed at the alleged taunting, but doing stupid shit like drowning yourself in somebody else's pool. Plus I'm really curious how all these kids are drowning -- they can't swim and jump in the pool??
I did stare back. It was fun to get the attention from my putty cat. But then after a while I would just walk over and give him a tap on the head. He never hissed, twitched his tail, or anything. Anyways, that was some time ago, and the cat has since died, so I can't do any experiments.
If you have a 6 foot fence around your pool, but your pool isn't covered, and kids climb the fence, get into the pool, and die (I believe this is the 2nd leading cause of teenage deaths after car accidents) -- Guess what. You're liable. I actually agree that the zoo was at fault for not having the fence at the recommended height, but your example of somebody intruding on your property and killing themselves in your pool is pretty ridiculous. Does personal responsibility mean nothing any more?
Tigers are like all other cats that way, a stare is a dominance challenge. My cat used to stare at me, but it didn't otherwise display behavior of trying to dominate -- like getting aggressive. I don't know what it was thinking, but dominance wasn't it.
Python isn't about "flavors", it's about "There should be one -- and preferably only one -- obvious way to do it." That means breaking the old way when it's decided that the new way is better.
So narrow your browser window. It really annoys me when sites decide in advance how much text I should see on a line. The web should be viewable on a wide range of devices, from old 14" monitors with 800x600 resultion and large fonts, to 24" monitors with amazing resolution, to people browsing on their iPhones.
Deciding to uselessly throw away horizontal space in advance is wrong.
They could deal with an actual problem instead... Domain tasting is an actual problem, a very big one, and it's good they are doing something about it. Give credit where credit is due.
"There is an exceptionally expedient way for society to deal with this. It is unfortunate that it is necessary, but we must reconcile ourselves to fact that societal institutions have been corrupted."
"Vigilantism is not only necessary, it is justified."
"the names of their family members, the schools their children attend. Everything. This is War, ladies and gentlemen."
"We must destroy not just his willingness, but his ability to fight."
"We, the greater whole of society, are everywhere. We surround them. We can destroy them."
Exactly what he's trying to do to the blogger. As I've said, you are assuming a lot from little, and I gave you valid reasons why, which you have not disputed. Would you support the original post if it had been directed at the people fighting Intelligent Design, when they uncovered who was behind the Intelligent Design movement?
I'm powerful, look at me, I'll know all about you and will make you miserable unless you do what I want. You're assuming a lot from little. It's very natural to want to know who is saying bad things about you; that doesn't mean you are going to do them harm.
I ran a service once for a small community, and some people didn't like the way I was running it. There were some open and public complaints, which was fine, but then somebody decided to ask the person providing the host machine to shut me down. My natural reaction was to ask who, and it really bothered me when I didn't get a response. I wasn't going to attack this person. I just felt like I had the right to face my detractors, and not have to deal with shadows.
When somebody puts up a site praising some product and we are skeptical, we want to know who's behind it. When somebdoy puts forward an argument for teaching intelligent design in the schools, we want to know who is behind it. Now imagine you're running a legal business, and somebody starts anonymously calling you out by name, saying how rotten you are. Would you want to know who's behind it?
And the response? Death threats to you and your family?

How can I get the old slashdot back?
Have you tried Preferences -> Comments -> Discussion Style -> Classic Discussion System?

Following conventions makes text easier to read. By not following conventions, you are being inconsiderate and rude.
