I am a mac user, so i only saw the silverlight version. But the video quality is way better than youtube. It is not DVD quality, but it is close. I haven't used it in a few weeks. It is totally possible that the increased popularity of the service has choked their bandwidth.
I just logged in to check, and the quality is fine. About as good as standard TV.
I think it is sort of funny that netflix gave this service to existing customers for free. and now people are bitching about the quality of this service that i see as basically icing on my dvd subscription cake.
While most people are wage slaves, if you choose to reject consumerism you can live on almost nothing, and not be a slave. In the US, if you want to be part of mainstream culture, yes you are a kind of slave, but i hope that the current economic crisis will help people open their eyes to the folly of materialism. Really the only oppressive laws in the US are those against personal freedom , like the war on drugs and laws that tell people how consenting adults how to behave in private.
anyone who believes that americans don't have more freedom than people living in saudi arabia need to educate themselves.
To make the long story short, in order for the Muslim world to overtake the West, they will have to liberalize, and once they liberalize they are unlikely to see our culture as abhorrent.
Actually, they just have to immigrate to europe and america and have lots of babies until they can institute shariah law.
All wars are not equal.
But the # of fatalities is a only a proxy to the psychological devastation that war can cause. Leaving people alive but traumatized can be worse in the long run.
Japan is an interesting case of this. One could argue that the fetishistic nature of their current culture is a coping mechanism for communal post-traumatic stress disorder.
I know this is off-topic, but this discussion begs a comment on the current israel-gaza situation. Israel killed over a thousand gazans (many civilian) in the recent conflict. There are 1.4 million people in gaza and another 2.5 million in the west bank. How can people be calling this genocide? More americans were killed in 9/11 and i don't think anyone called that genocide.
That said, the policies of israel (and the PA) have made life in gaza suffocating. The international community for the most part doesn't care about people living in pain (physical or psychological) but kill some and suddenly everyone cares.
If people focused more on the living instead of counting fatalities the world would be a better place.
Wow. Usually the mainstream media gets it wrong.
But the telegraph got it right:
"The new study also showed that people who had a high caffeine intake were not more likely to think that others were out to get them, a so-called "persecution complex"."
and the./ poster got it wrong.
PearsSoap for the FAIL.
wrong.
"These device" has never been used for lie detection.
The OP is misleading. functional MRI (fMRI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Functional_magnetic_resonance_imaging)has been used (badly) for lie detection. This technology has nothing to do with fMRI. Mainstream scientists (i am a neuroscientist) do not believe that brain scanning technology has been properly vetted as a lie detection device. It may be as good, or slightly better than a traditional lie detector, but probably should not be used as evidence in court.
Note, other researchers are trying to improve the spatial and temporal resolution of fMRI, but we are talking baby steps - doubling the resolution would be impressive.
It isn't clear whether the quantum uncertainty of the particles is relevant for reconstructing a biological organism.
It's true that the precise location of individual ions would be slightly misplaced. However, as long as the wiring of neurons was accurately recreated it might work.
So while the 'recreated' organism would not be 'exactly' the same as the scanned organism, it might be good enough.
If an author has a deep understanding of human behavior he can easily write 'prophecy'. In fact, plenty of good science fiction writers could be viewed as prophets. But as parent says, the point of prophecy is not that we are supposed to be awed that it predicts the future. But we are supposed to think about it and prepare for the future. amen to that.
Which reminds me of GWB's infamously stupid Katrina comment "I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees" in his interview with Diane Sawyer. Let's hope the next admin does a bit more reading.
I agree with your insight. Too much stability in DNA could be disadvantageous. In fact, it is well known that bacteria increase their rate of mutation when they are stressed (due to toxins or lack of food) in a desperate attempt to 'find a solution'.
Perhaps in the post-apocalyptic radioactive earth, when the rate of mutation will skyrocket, PNA, or another stable genetic molecule, will emerge as the dominant genetic molecule.
Of course, it would first emerge in bacteria, but perhaps over millions of years complex life based on PNA could come to rule over earth and tell stories about the old days when the strange 'humans' ruled the earth. And the religious PNAers will say that the earth is a few thousand years old and that god put human bones in the earth to test their faith
Apple is definitely keeping an eye on android.
i think that android will be good for iPhone users because it will force apple to open the app store up a bit more.
note: it has already eliminated the oppressive NDA
If the current success of apple has taught us anything, it is that people don't care about control, monopolies or being locked in. The reason for most of the M$ hating was because it was broke.
In the 80's mac os was not very good. there was no protected memory, it would crash frequently, and the whole resource fork thing was a pain in the ass. windows 95, for all its faults, and especially NT , with NTFS, made windows a better OS than mac at that time.
if android can provide a better experience than WinMo and the iPhone, it will take over. It is becomes the linux of the mobile world, with many different flavors it will find a niche, like linux has, but it won't kill the iPhone.
i don't know if you meant that as a joke, but this technique is part of the spec for TMDS (used in DVI & HDMI video)
the first eight bits are optionally inverted to even out the balance of ones and zeros and therefore the sustained average DC level. The tenth bit is added to indicate whether this inversion took place.
True, but the guys at Nagasaki and Hiroshima were enemies of the USA at the time the bomb was tested, so, it wasn't like it was a loss of -any- life.
i'm not sure the point you are trying to make here. Are you saying that it is a bad example, because the deaths due to the atom bomb were not accidents? That makes it even more fucked up. Scientists have been fucking people up since the dawn of time.
But if you are looking for an accident , I'll have to go with Chernobyl.
I'm no bioscientist, but could this project be modified to something which harvests energy from the sun and then can discharge it in a was in which electrical or bio-mechanical energy could be generated?
Who gets the -1 duh?
You didn't specify "other than as petroleum-type fuels" in your original post.
However, it might be more efficient if bacteria just used the sun's energy to make hydrogen gas, and then we used the hydrogen for fuel cells or to burn as clean energy.

Every ./er should write Peter King (the jackass introducing the bill) and explain to him why he is a moron.

you can return a function from a function in matlab. and pass a function to a function.
% in your path
function y=powfn(n)
y=@(z)(z^n);
>> pow2=powfn(2);
>>pow2(2)
ans =
4
etc....
When i read the title, i actually thought they wanted to prevent people from using the internet while drunk.

On the other hand, if there was a significant drop if female fertility we would see a drop in population.
If they make woman that look like Milla Jovovich, I'm all for it.

If you want to see some poll meta-analysis that is pretty rigorous check out election.princeton.edu.
are you joking?
either you are joking or a moron.

You didn't specify "other than as petroleum-type fuels" in your original post.
The non-sarcastic answer to your question is that in theory, yes, you could make a biological equivalent of a photovoltaic solar panel.
However, it might be more efficient if bacteria just used the sun's energy to make hydrogen gas, and then we used the hydrogen for fuel cells or to burn as clean energy.
but, you said "significant loss of life", not "destruction of earth"
Not sure if you have heard of them. they are called plants.
Phytoplankton in particular have been pretty handy at self-replicating in the oceans and being responsible for about 1/2 of all oxygen production.
antibiotics, vaccines, surgical techniques, etc.
but wouldn't you say the atom bomb was an experiment that caused significant loss of life?
