The other option, now that most folk now have halfdecent connections is to set up an rsync to a buddies machine, (and reciprocate) , using encryption, you now have an automatic off site back up.

And @ to be on the right. just above shift. (where " is on US keyboards).

It took me years before I realised that 'tilde' (~) was the key to the left of 1 and Quake referred to that for the console, when on a UK board, tilde is immediately to the left of Return....

Where are these inexpensive USB caddies?

I have been looking for a while as I have 6x 160GB IDE drives here from my old file server, after I realised that spending £75 on a 1TB drive would save me and be a whole lot quieter and easier than a noisy file server running 24/7 eating ~180W. I think I calculated about 6 months or so to break even in costs.

Anyway, I was interested in the idea of reusing the drives in usb enclosures for back up, but basically once I factor in the cost of 6x enclosures, I'm better off buying a single new drive which are even cheaper now than they were back then (end of last year).

I'm thinking £5 or less per enclosure would be suitable, I think the best I could find was somewhere between £10 and £15 (x 6 = £60-£90!) I can get a 1.5TB drive for that these days.

If I were to do that I'd probably then have to move my 2x 500GB sata drives outs, and then I'd be faced with the same situation again. For the cost of £40-£50 can get a brand new 500GB external drive...

don't want to start a holy war here, but what is the deal with you Windows 7 fanatics? I've been sitting here at my freelance gig in front of a Windows 7 box (a C2D6400 w/2048 Megs of RAM) for about 20 minutes now while it attempts to copy a 17 Meg file from one folder on the hard drive to another folder. 20 minutes. At home, on my Pentium 3 Tualitin running Win2k, which by all standards should be a lot slower than this Windows 7 box, the same operation would take about 2 minutes. If that.

In addition, during this file transfer, Firefox will not work. And everything else has ground to a halt. Even Notepad++ is straining to keep up as I type this.

I won't bore you with the laundry list of other problems that I've encountered while working on various Windows 7 boxes, but suffice it to say there have been many, not the least of which is I've never seen a Windows 7 box that has run faster than its older counterparts, despite the Windows' 7 faster architecture. My Pentium 3 with 80 megs of ram runs faster than this 2.13 Ghz machine at times. From a productivity standpoint, I don't get how people can claim that the Windows 7 box is a superior machine.

Win7 addicts, flame me if you'd like, but I'd rather hear some intelligent reasons why anyone would choose to use a Win7 over other faster, cheaper, more stable systems.
