true, I'm no longer a die-hard FPS hack and slash fan, but back in the good ol' days of Golden Eye they were my favorite. I still enjoy Halo and Halo 2. I played a lot of Unreal Tournament when I was in college too. I think that the fact that if I died I'd re-spawn in a few seconds is what kept me from getting angry at the game, it wasn't as if I was going to have to start all over again, or at least from my last save point, if I died. With other games if I didn't remember to save after I got that last item, I'd have to go in and do it all over again, and that's whats frustrating.

And I totally agree, these games heighten aggressive tendencies momentarily. I'm not still angry in half an hour, and by the next day I barely remember I was upset at all. I'm not saying that violent games or even the games that get me all frustrated and angry cause any kind of long term anger/violence problems. I believe one must be predisposed to that kind of behavior for video games to have any kind of effect in the long term.

I did notice that on the way home I was driving faster than I normally would have. And the Italian Job isn't even really about driving fast!

When I play Zelda or Paper Mario and and I get stuck on a level because my timing is just a little off I get pissed around the 4th time I try and fail and I start cussing and throwing the controller down But I don't go and punch my Husband or kick the cat! I get more aggravated by games like Zelda than games like Counter Strike. I'm more likely to be violent towards others when I'm frustrated than if I've been playing a FPS or a Hack and Slash.

The problem of having so few women in CS is not a problem that should be solved at a college level, it should start in Jr. High and High School, even before. By college you've pretty much made up your mind if you are going into CS or not, you may switch to IT if you find the programing too difficult and that's probably for the best for both men and women who can't fully grasp programing.

and may I say I'm totally jealous that you got to have programing class in Jr. High. Our High school didn't even offer it.

girls in my high school were always discouraged from taking computer classes in favor of takeing psychology or business. I asked if I could take classes at the local college for computer science (not an uncommon practice amongst my male friends) I was told that I could not, despite the fact that I had enough credits to graduate a semester early. I was repeatedly told to take a business class because that would be more "useful". I had one ally in the whole faculty and she couldn't help me because she wasn't my assigned counselor.

In a society where everyone is encouraged to go in to a tech field and (surprise surprise) there are more equal numbers entering the field, doesn't it strike you that if we encouraged people to follow their passions they would follow them? In the US people are encouraged to go into business, hence, a fairly equal number of male and female business majors. I was discouraged from going into CS, there were other girls interested and they all bailed and became teachers and nurses(noble professions to be sure), but they had originally wanted to go into CS and if they had been encouraged to follow through with that, there would be a few more women in CS instead of a few more women who are nurses and teachers because that was what they were told good little girls became.

Try working in an environment that's all women! Dear God it's terrible. Everyone is catty to each other calling other women Cunts behind their backs, it's just as bad with all women as it is with all men!! that's why it's good to mix it up, we are all on better behavior when the other sex is present. Why do you think that's a bad thing????

I agree that women who pull the layer card give all of us a bad name. I can see by your response that you are in favor of government censorship. That's your right and I am happy to agree to disagree on this point. Censorship shouldn't be totally abolished, I understand that a certain amount of censorship is necessary. I know many gamers who are appalled that some states don't want to sell M rated games to just anyone (ie kids under the recommended age). I wouldn't be opposed to having to show an ID to buy an M rated game, I remember having to show my ID to get in to an R rated movie, and I'm still carded when I go to the Bar, it's not THAT big of a hassle. But I don't think that Banning things outright is the way to go about this. I grew up in the South side of Chicago, I saw a lot of violence, and I'm not a violent person. My husband grew up in Detroit. He saw a lot of violence too, also, not a violent person. He does, however, have an addictive personality, not because of his environment, but because of genetics. He was addicted to video games when he was younger, not sleeping for days just to play games. He played a lot of violent games, lived in a violent environment, had an alcoholic father and a distant mother. He's got problems, who doesn't? But one problem he doesn't have is a problem with violence.

I personally believe that it is wrong for the government to "Ban" a whole genre of tv, movie, theater, games, and books just because a few people have a problem. They don't ban porn, cigarettes, or alcohol and they cause much greater problems. There are limits set, and I can understand wanting those limits to be enforced more fervently, but banning is not an answer.

Given your logic, we should also ban all violent TV, Movies, and Theater. kids watch violent TV all the time, and if mirror neuron responses are shown when we watch TV.... you get the idea.

The trick is to not let kids who are too young to play Mature games play Mature games. Same thing with TV, don't let your kid watch M rated TV, don't let your kid go to R rated films. Your 7 year old should be playing Mario Kart not Grand Theft Auto.

And honestly, it wouldn't matter how many times I watched some one dance or ice skate or do gymnastics, I would never be able to imitate it. It's just not who I am. Same with Violence, it doesn't matter how many times I see some one shoot another person, I could never imitate it. I'm sure I could figure out how to shoot a gun, but knowing the mechanics of something is different than doing it. I understand the mechanics of driving a stick shift but I still can't drive one.

It comes right down to, are the ones playing the video games able to distinguish fantasy from reality. When in reality the place I felt the least judged or discriminated against was in the computer lab. everyone was just CS/IS in there, in fact, we would all gather together and stare at the math majors who HAD to take one programming class and we would whisper about how they didn't belong. Guys would ask to see my code if they were stuck, I would ask to see theirs.

I was discriminated against in other places; in the Library I'd offer to help some one with their power point and I'd be given the "don't worry honey, I'll figure it out" *pity smile*. I volunteered to do slides for a church and the pastor actually said to me "It's ok sweetheart, we want someone who knows what they are doing, there are plenty of boys in the church who can do it" I was so taken aback by the comment I didn't even know what to say.

The place I felt the most accepted and the most appreciated was in the CS/IS department. And I'm sure that with solid game mechanics if she had normal sized bosoms, people would still play the game.

I'm more inclined to blame the designers than the guys who play it. The guys who play the game may be ogling her but the designers are the ones that made her the way she is, they could have given her A cups but they decided to go with double J's instead. (And it's TOTALLY unrealistic for her to do ANYTHING she does with those hooters)

It's nice to have a female character to play as. As a girl gamer I've gotten kind of tired of always having to be a guy, I like to see my sex represented in games but I think I'd prefer it if the girls were a little more realistic. Before anyone freaks out, I understand that men are not realistically represented in games all the time. But they don't have a bulge the size of their fore arm in their pants either.
