Another good book you might want to look at is the ARRL Handbook - the beginning has a good rundown on various electronics subjects and it's chock full of schematics, diagrams, and writeups on various projects. True, it's mostly radio gear in there - but that also leads to another thing - Amateur radio is a -really- good way to get into electronics and learn a lot, and you can build stuff you can use right away.
If you can find a local amateur radio club, it's usually cheap or free to take the license exam, and with the dropping of the morse code requirment you get HF priveleges right away with the Technician license.
Almost everything I know about electronics I learned through amateur radio, I've been licensed since I was 11, if i recall, 19 now and just picked up my General class license recently.
It's a very interesting hobby and it can go either way for you - you can be an expensive appliance operator, or you can be one of the interesting folk and build and design your own radios and other gear (such as amplifiers, filters, etc).

To a point - but because of the pidgin project I have an *awsome* IM program for OS X that uses the backend library - Linux development makes life better for all of us.;)
(And throws projects like trillian back to where they deserve to be - no where on my systems.:) )
I would love to know how he did that, i've been programming TI calculators for YEARS, doing work with the 84+ and it's USB as of recent, and i'd love to hear about this z80 port of linux that runs in 1MB ram,:)
Careful there! You'll catch windows cancer if you keep on using that!
Keep the cigs, far safer.

OS X install by default has no network services running external and is firewalled. you have to manually turn on network sharing and services from a preference pane
Replying to an AC isn't the brightest thing to do but....
ATT/Cingular and T-Mobile are the only two major GSM carriers in the United States.
The others are usually all CDMA carriers and the phones are completely incompatable on the network technology level.
and re those vzw phones with sim cards, it was either RIMM cards or sim cards for overseas usage of the phone, they serve no use on the continental US side of the pond
For example: why does iTunes run the iPod service even when iTunes isn't running and even though I've never used an iPod?...
Does the same thing on OS X, don't you know?
It just seems that, oh heck, out of sight is apparently out of mind or something and/or it just really dosn't affect performance at all and is nothing to bitch about?
Indeed, all of this is true, and when I read it it seemed like google wants to swap their engine with windows's transparently, and I thought 'Why don't they make the same complaint about OS X?'
So I poked around a bit with spotlight, and, from what it seems, it's a simple matter of swaping the executables spotlight toolbars make calls to to put your own engine in there, for whatever purpose you want... don't know how well it'd survive updates, but there it is. Perhaps a watchdog daemon?
If those are your needs, why the hell wouldn't you just buy a cheap used ibook?
Heck, I've got an early '05 ibook that i've retired to server duty with OS X Server for file sharing and all that, and that ran WoW wonderfuly.
Even now, i'd still be using it if i didn't kill the backlight trying to do case mods =] heh
You know what! Your last point is right.... and a few of the others - except!
Linux is a *clone* of UNIX
Not a flavor.
Flavor would indicate direct AT&T descent. which there is not.

TOO MANY FEATURES! Do I *look* like I want an easy time? *mutters something profane and returns to optimizing his microwave's OS*
Take a look at Adium X - it's an IM app written for OS X using libpurple with a -very- sane UI

erasing a fucked up mod i did to a post above... goddamnit
I actually wasn't sure if it was a troll post or not, hence why I prefixed my post

Starcraft never had a macbook patch for it, check, it's running in rosetta, heh.
GSM carriers in america use SIM cards too, you know. Unless that card in my phone isn't, then... well, what is it? :)
Okay, So you have a problem with it.....
I don't have a problem with you having a problem with it, just don't legislate away things just because you have a problem with something....
I can understand if it's seriously detrimental (Like theft and such), but other than that...
Don't legislate my freedoms away because of your opinions.

what will you do with the $19K left over after buying all two games?!
this is blatantly insightful
Us USA-ians can experiance it too, you insensitive clod! ... us intelligent ones, anyway.
