All life ends on earth by age or disease, so if enough air/water/food for a lifetime then the Mars trip is no different to living on Earth. Cleric has no fundamental logic to life's period on Earth never mind elsewhere. So not suicide unless all life is a suicide trip.
A play on freedom, what to do to get it and maintain it. The actions of greed, advancement and lust in some persons and the cruelty of those in power (power corrupts) to keep it The play by New Zealander Sydney Goodsir Smith, published by Oliver & Boyd of Edinburgh, Scotland, 1960, is in the "Lallans" (Scottish) dialect of English. Once read , it changes how you look at the persons 'seeking' financial/social advancement in any polulation. I am biased, as a Scot living in England, but it made great sense to my Russian colleagues.
1. Crowdsourcing does not give a valid "share certificate' or 'vote' in a company/organisation. SEC etc only relevant to 'saleable/buyable transferable' certificate of value/vote. 2. Crowdsource funders are 'adventurers in trade'. All can be lost (idea fails) or they may get a tangeable reward ( a magazine or T-shirt or software) which is not a 'security' or even remotely fall near ' 'security' meaning. 3. Seems to try to get at "IPO equivalent without securites on a registered exchnage", but even voting shares in a club, say a chess club, are irrelevant to SEC; I think. 4. Key lies in both USA and EU/UK that sale of a share in a 'public company'/'public incorporation' are subject to regulation. In UK at least Private Companies are not subject to share regulation but only to tax law and companies tax and companies law, and must keep a register of shareholders which is public knowledge via application to register by any interested party.
History. Farm labourers and others were on quarterly contracts since mid 1450s. "Hiring Fairs " on Quarter Days (Christmas day was one quarter day, when debts etc were due for payment hiring new staff etc , so system pre-dates the Modern Europeans in America.
1.BBC in UK has for many years 'employed' many 'staff' on 13 week contracts. Renews if necessary , one person worked out 36 years that way. Always 'shedable' at end of 13 weeks , Actor carries his own insurance for health illness and Professional Liability to main company. Its a way of life. 2 As a (non-IT) engineer I am now into seventh year of short term contracts for one UK company. Suits me, I work only the hours I want to work. Life Ok for reward. However I base all things on Salary in year to myself through the MY Limited Company (a private Incorporation) billing the UK Client Company. This allows me to get insurance as easy to get insurance for company employees via company, but maybe no so as 'persons'. Tax saving is little, depends on how much you leave in company, but taking out say 80% billing as salary is OK in UK. There are up front yearly charges as insurance / IT stuff etc to buy before you can enter into a reasonable contract , so you need to cover that in a 'minimum expected hours' or retainer clause. P.S. I do IT as well , but that is not what they pay for.
I often wondered why USA constitution did not follow the established and known formulae of most European states/kingdoms/dictatorships origin in that "treason" has two grades "High Treason" and "Petty Treason",or big and little treason. It avoids conflicts of jury disagreements on grade.
similar corporate story. 4000+machines, 30% desktops circa 2000/2002 XP Pentium 4s, adequate for word documentation and spreadsheets, old corporate programs need to be upgraded/re-written from 1998 libraries; 60% 2004 laptops with XP Office 2010, new employees & machine failures put onto laptops win 7, MS office 2010, as basis of a slow upgrading. Change scheduled, funds allowing, to go all Win 7 in 2014 onwards with new laptops but company heavily indebted, so that is not a small beans rounding error in total even when compared to employee remuneration plus costs, it is real cash spend from borrowed money.
Sometimes you do in a job that which is immoral (like kill random people as a soldier or whatever) but you do it in the name of a 'higher good'. From my point of view, with some of above experience, you remember them in your dreams and nightmares for the rest of your life. You are excused legally, but your conscience does not let it go.
Correct. This fits with my work life balance. I prefered to be the Vizier not the Sultan. This allows life without the problem of other folk wanting to kill you to get the job.
1. I calculate my personal and corporation tax using four digit decimals (with a two digit Pound/Penny (or Dollar/Cent)system this seems ok) 2 Her Majesties Revenue & Customs sometimes calculates to two decimals and sometimes does not in the same tax calculation. 3. Hence having paid my estimate of due tax, I have got demands for one penny to four pennies sent by post (cost say 15 pound to Revenue to issue pay or punishment warning letter) or face punishment and fines. I duly pay one penny at local Post Office in cash, who charge HMRC 4 pounds or so to transmit the penny due. They (the Post Office staffers) laugh and say this is a very regular occurrence. Thus penny rounding error costs HMRC say 19 or 20 pounds of spend to collect. It would appear they cannot just 'not balance the books and not collect' [computer instruction in calculation to disregard sums due of less than xx pennies] due to stringency of reporting to parliament they have done all possible to collect due tax. (A tick box syndrome on HMRC officials reporting to government)
1. I act for a UK organization which has similar restrictions for handling Export Controlled matters & 'Classified' matters. These are not the same. The users and any intermediaries need to be known and locked down. 2. if "Cloud" storage for access from remote computer, then the store for both of above had better be within your own location and control and under your own domain, never under a 'third party external service' on remote servers to which you have no physical access. 3. ITAR and its equivalent UK Export Control restrict some things, 'Classified' by any government restricts other things. However the penalties are very severe for bad practice. 4. You have a problem if any person would access your servers from outside the USA, as internet access passes through non USA systems. If you and all your staff ONLY work within the USA then this is possible, but note, ITAR does allow staff to take laptops home, Classified (depending on level) does not allow staff to leave the locked building with any laptop or copy (USBs anyone?). The nationality or birth of any person outside the USA may forbid you having them in any chain that allows corporate computer access. Example: The company I advise has some senior USA staff, I have to control that they have no access whatsoever or knowledge of certain UK EYES ONLY level matters. Keep 'cloud' internal to USA (i.e. refuse and block all foreign incoming and outgoing signals). Check parentage of all staff. You have your work cut out!
"This type of scanning key cutting machine has been around for ages - the storing of the key biting is new." A bar of soft soap, or hard soap partly softened. This record of keys has been done for years.
My question.
Part1 history. While developing many other facets of Gnu/Linux so that most small companies can use FOSS to totally run their business, the lack of a FOSS UK or EU VAT system of bookkeeping keeps small start ups 'locked' into Windows as there they have the relevant accounting/bookkeeping programs. (GnuCash is OK for personal accounts, useless for UK or EU VAT systems). Part 2 Question: Is any effort being made to solve this as it would allow start ups to be independent of Windows. There are some paid Linux bookkeeping systems but that is off putting to start ups.
1. I worked as a 'wage slave' for a few companies until formal retirement age. One of these then had troubles doing a job I had done (they hired a multi degree person who had 'book learning' but no real work skills). 2. Phone call to me. I resisted, as they wanted too long a work week, then gave in after forming a Limited Company (private limited company UK = Delaware private Inc) to separate my assets from work risks. Did first short contract at their 'long week'. 3.Next contract offer I said only if a short work week. They accepted. Now on my 28th contract and 8 years later well into my seventies hired again. 4. Get the skill set right for the company and you are then 'proven worth'.
1 this was routine in all secure embargo-ed documents issued in UK by certain government departments and other organizations (e.g with Politicians on distribution list) so that tracing a 'leaked document' was possible. 2. Sometimes we changed complete paragraphs ( without changing the sense). 3. It caught a few folks. so very 'prior art' no patent possible.
Offer to all academic folk and city folk, be open to all, remember academic folk will fade away every 4 years or so.
Try to teach and show first of all:
1, Use of a Live Linux (puppy, Knoppix, OpenSuse, Mint) It will save a lot of things including those who do not back up their thesis work, as recovery from a dead MS Windows machine by Knoppix use is al ive saver.
2. Then discuss show how to dual boot machines
Then folk will take to Linux
3. The saving stuff from non booting MS Windows machines is a very good introduction to Linux for students, staff and others as it gives great confidence in use of Linux systems, even if unable to code or develop for systems.
Best wishes for your group, keep it happy and both physical and also by email or blog.
We still use *286 cpu machines in production. Do job, why change? If they fail, then we will switch control functions to a Raspbery Pi. Regret modern MS Windows notin running for any change of machines
The big problem in Ph D studies is your own review a few weeks before submittal time when you realize the things you should have done, at this point your own 'cluster' and always available is a "beyond price" jewel asset' to you. Awaiting priority on faculty assets could cost you your degree.
Good luck to you. Good thinking out of your priorities.
Some UK cards require Chip (on card) PIN entry on card machine and signature as well into machine. It detects after the fact false records, originally for use inside banks so elderly (memory loss etc for PIN numbers) can get teller to enter PIN from a record in bank, the signature verified the request to enter PIN.
Referring to the post from idle tank/septic tank cleaner this job cleaning the night privies and disposal was the highest paid job in UK circa 200AD to 1750AD outside 'politics' (Crown/diplomats court layers etc). The families concerned laid off cash as loans to aspiring politicians. Muck pays. Just make sure you have an other 'job' for status e.g. church lay officer / treasurer etc
