  1. Easy solution on Cisco Sues Apple Over iPhone Trademark · · Score: 1

Like the tiff between Columbia pictures and Filmation over the use of the term "Ghostbusters" in their animated properties.

    "The REAL iPhone".

And everyone else can go back to calling Cisco's "the other iPhone", "the wanna-be iPhone", "the iPhone in name only".

Well, I'd seriously doubt Apple would have waited to enter into negotiations till after Cisco released their phone. On the other hand, they were so secretive on the whole product development side, they well could have waited to the last minute. Again - will be fun to find out. Dirty laundry here we come!

Perhaps they figured it'd be cheaper to invalidate the trademark in court than fork over a ton of money forever like they did with the Beatles. It's worked once, and if it bleeds Cisco a few million for fun before they end up changing it to "Apple Phone" - all the better.

  8. Re:Trademark info on Cisco Sues Apple Over iPhone Trademark · · Score: 2, Insightful

Not sure. You don't have to have the same name to be slapped with Trade Dress issues regarding trademarks. The fact that iMac preceeded the Cisco art obtained in 2000 could have merit (note I said could). Another angle is the fact that it was over 6 years before Cisco used the name. Are there any non-usage restrictions in this area?

It's gonna be a fun show. Previous reports were that negotiations were going fine. A pissed Steve Jobs makes a wonderful fireworks display as public embarassment after a long project debut. Can't wait.

There was a lot made of the early specs of the PS3, one of them being it was capable of driving not one - but two 1080p displays in tandem. The potential of this being used in real-life led to it being dropped (so the story goes). If the PS3 was truely capable of driving two 1080p's wouldn't it be possible to drive a single 2160?

I recall that many early 30 inch progessive display cards used two cards in tandem to spit the screen into two vertical halves. If the PS3 video system has the omph, could it be similarly done?

Don't know how BIG the display would have to be to be ideal either. I recall that 1080p is barely perceptible with anything under 37-40 inches. I can only imagine the optimal size you'd need to see the advantages of Quad HDTV.

Curious how long it'll take for Apple to be in the same camp (hope hope). In the meantime, I'd keep that bluetooth headset handy when on the sidewalks.

Well actually, the secondary function are robust. So I can ditch my 2 megapixel camera (yes it's old) for one that can email from itself on standard wifi (not an overpriced cellpackage), a decent iPod with video (the screen puts the current video ipod to shame, and I don't like to manage 20 gigs of tunes - but that's just me (seriously - I'm too anal retentive to manage a best-list more than 4 gigs), and it's a decent phone with real web functionality. So, I can upgrade from my shuffle, ditch the canon, and have a swank phone. If any of the functions were crippled like my current phone (or expensive or unusable - thank YOU Verizon) then I'd balk at the price. The combo makes for less crap to pack on my person, so it's "ok". Sure I'd love it for 400 - but at this point it's got more features than a mere widescreen ipod video which I was expecting to pay 400 for.

  18. Re:Contracts on iPhone, Apple TV Headline MacWorld Keynote · · Score: 2, Interesting

Verizon cripples their phones by turning off any OBEX capability. Basically the bluetooth can only synch with address lists. That's it. Photos, tunes, anything else basically is locked out. You can hack it - but trust me - this isn't a simple task. I work with a cell-phone software company, but not everyone else does. Having an open-phone that has as much functionality as an ipod as a phone - and a camera that matches the pixels of my current cannon mini is very - very tempting indeed. I'd probably keep the Verizon just for the family calling plan it's attached to until it expires, and use Apple's as my main-phone.
