    I prefer SmootchY songs:
"My Stepdad's Not Mean (He's Just Adjusting.)"
    KIDS:
    'Stepdads are people too/ They
have bad days, like we all do/
Be patient and help them through/
    Stepdads are people too...'

    SMOOCHY:
(singing) ... 'So three cheers for the man
that I proudly call Stan... He's
not quite a dad or a brother...
Yes, he gets cross, but still he's
the boss... And besides he takes
    care of my mother!'

    SMOOCHY:
    Remember, kids. First
impressions, good or bad, are not
always what they seem. Just like
a new puppy, new dads need to
    adjust to their surroundings. So
    give 'em time! But always
    remember... if he becomes abusive
to you or Mommy... what are the
    magic numbers?

KIDS IN BLEACHERS(shouting in unison: Nine-One-One!
    SMOOCHY: Right-o-riffic!

  4. Re:Isn't one of the biggest barriers... on iPod Owners Not As Loyal To Brand As Mac Owners · · Score: 1

iTunes has gotten so evil and DRM'y that I can't stand to use it anymore. The fact that I can't play my music where I want it is the iPod killer, not the Zune. I've almost completely gone back to just buying CDs and when I do download, it's not from iTunes.

The whole thing turns me off, and many of the iPod owners that I know are frustrated by this as well.

  7. Re:DRM is a hassle on iPod Users Buy CDs, Shun iTunes · · Score: 1

You may not be able to tell the difference between DRM'd music and non, but you can certainly hear the difference between a regular downloaded track - MP3, AAC, whatever - and CD quality.

Music from iTMS sounds flattened. The quality is certainly lower; any time there is an album that I really want, I buy the CD, but if I'm just fishing around for something new or if it's a band that I like but not a fanatic about, I'll just download (though I use emusic these days...I dislike DRM for other reasons).

Every time I leave my gmail, I make sure that I log out before searching...or more usually, search for something random and embarrassing, see my account name in the top right hand corner, and then log out as quickly as possible.

  9. Re:Other way around? on New Kind of Spam 'Un-Training' Filters? · · Score: 1

Same here - hotmail has been crammed with spam lately - everyday at least a dozen...I've already switched to another email service, but check my hotmail account periodically for stragglers.

  10. I dislike apple, but... on French Lawmakers Approve 'iTunes Law' · · Score: 1

I dislike Apple a lot lately - ever since switching to Linux, trying to get the music that I've purchased from iTMS has been an obstacle. I've overcome the obstacle, but the fact that it was an obstacle at all is really galling.

But at the same time, I don't really believe that what Apple is doing with it's music store is illegal, nor should it be illegal. I think that it may be a little bit evil, and I kick myself for having bought so much music there, but it was my own fault.

I really hope that a good alternative will surface soon. I don't want to steal music; I want to pay for it, but I want to get quality and I want to be able to do what I want to with it once I've purchased it.

For now, I've gone back to trips to the "record" store

  11. Re:Hand holding. on What Do Geek Squad Technicians Actually Do? · · Score: 1

Agreed. My (only) experience with Geek Squad... Windows crashed during an update, and I wanted to find out if recovering my data was possible, or if I should just give it up. Geek Squad wanted to come over, charge me a lot, and just reinstall Windows, i.e. not save my data. I told them, I can reinstall Windows on my own, thanks...(though in actuality I ended up installing Debian instead). My sense of it was essentially that they didn't want to help me with my problem, they just wanted to sell me their service and do things their own way.

  12. Re:My #1 annoyance: on Linux Annoyances For Geeks · · Score: 1

For me, Ubuntu has been the only distro that I've tried that I've been able to get everything that I want to work to work. I suppose that this singles me out as a n00b, but I've tried several distros (debian, slackware, zenwalk, as well as FreeBSD) and Ubuntu just works the best for me. To each his own I suppose.

  13. What I'd really like to see... on Future(?) Design of Mobile Phones · · Score: 1

What I'd really like to see is flexible phones - something soft, flat and jelly like that you could put in your back pocket and sit on without breaking. (and I concur with others - I just want my phone to call people, not anything else...that is unless it does everything else) Most of the designs here look a little silly to me, though I do like the odd bracelet one.

  14. Re:Linux sNOBs on Linux Snobs, The Real Barriers to Entry · · Score: 1

That sounds totally accurate... I'm new to Linux as well, and I've been trying to get just basic things to work and running into walls. My biggest obstacle so far is trying to get my crappy Dell a920 printer to work with Debian. I've read dozen's of walkthroughs, but to no avail. I have questions to ask, but in virtually every discussion board that I've come across, newbie questions are regularly ridiculed or just not answered. So far, I love Linux...except for when I have issues, because I know that when I have issues, chances are I won't be able to find help anywhere.

One thing that I have always found interesting is the unadmitted believe that the development of human intelligence is something special. It is just an adaptation that has helped us survive - and do a lot more besides obviously, but people seem to very often want to imbue intelligence with a fated quality - like this is where evolution is supposed to lead - when it is no more meaningful than a giraffe neck.
