  2. Web Programming on How To Encourage a Young Teen To Learn Programming? · · Score: 1

I would suggest starting with web programming, specifically html, css and php. This gives a wide skill set, php is based off C so it makes the skill set easy to transfer, he'll learn some basic server administration and it gives an instant gratification that you don't always get with other programming languages.

There have been coders in recent years that appear to be able to switch languages with relative ease but studies on these coders have not been conducted and it is suspected that they could go off in a fit of rage at any moment and should be approached with extreme trepidation.

These would be web developers and should be approached with extreme caution becaause they could snap at any moment

My parents problem is they are trying to get $10,000 loan from some dude named Frank Petti in Nigeria. They don't believe that it's a scam despite me showing them the evidence and they are already out $500+. But he even sent "credentials" which were the worst photoshop job I've ever seen. No kidding, I did better the first time I used it.

IMO it's still not fast enough for those of us that must have the latest, greatest stable version of Ubuntu. However, the shipit disks are a great way to prove that Linux and Ubuntu is professional quality. A burned CD looks illegal, a printed CD in a nice case looks like something worth whatever the cost, then when you tell them it's free, their sold.

What Wikipedia needs to do is figure out if it wants to be the Encyclopedia Britannica of the 21st Century, or the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I can see an argument for both. On the one hand Wikipedia could be the easiest to use, most readily available, reliable source on the internet. However, as it currently stands anyone can edit it anytime, anywhere, which makes for a library of information even if it is biased and sometimes inaccurate, but very interesting and unique.

From what you've said, it further proves my point. My internship uses Windows, yours used OS. In the job market, if you were working for the DoE and applied for a new job in a different division and didn't know both OS and Windows you could be screwed. I'm not trying to stick up for Windows, but we don't live in a perfect world and limiting yourself to only OS tools can have the same effect as only limiting yourself to Windows, a lack of employability. Since, in this case, we are looking at students, who will probably be looking to increase employability, responsible use of Windows will be good for them.

  15. Re:Just another sign of the Microsoft apocalypse on Microsoft to Give Away Developer Tools to Students · · Score: 1

I'm interning for a national lab and I have to agree. They have a microsoft site license and having only used OS tools, it took time to learn the microsoft tools. With this program many students can have both the OS and Microsoft tools under their belts and increase their employability by increasing their skill set. The thing to remember though is that you need to know both. Knowing one and not the other, either way, will limit your possibility.

I'm glad we are doing such a nice job of giving the poster a good mostly unified answer Reading through it though I think the main answer is, "depends on what you plan to teach" If your teaching design then OSS or the old programs are both OK, but if your teaching program specific, using the old programs would be the best solution, but try to get the newest programs by any means necessary. And concepts do go a long way. I'm working on a VoTech degree in web design and management and our classes all use Adobe CS2. When I got CS3 it only took me about an hour to find all my tools in the new program, and since I had the concepts I was able to get right back to what I was doing. 20. About da money on No Same Sex Marriage In World of Warcraft? · · Score: 1

I've been following this story across several forums and newsites and I hope to shed some light on why this is the case.

As the subject suggests, it's about the money. While using words like fag and homo may be offesnsive to homosexual people, the same level of offense could be felt by non-tollerant hetrosexual people so BLizzard, to keep as many customers as possible, takes a neutral stance. They don't allow non-tollerants to make durogatory remarks to and/or about homosexuals and they keep homosexual appearances in game (such as GLBT guild ads and same sex marriages) banned.

This is one of those "squeaky wheel gets the oil" situations. I play Guild Wars with a couple ex-WoW players whose accounts were banned because they called other people fags when they saw them do something stupid. But as we've seen in the past the homosexual community is less secure in modern society so they scream or "squeak" louder when they are offended then hetrosexuals so that they can draw attention to the discrimination against them and support for homosexual society changes.
