You are quite right, and the reality is that since the global warming has been proven beyond reasonable doubt under current scientific knowledge the proof should be accepted and acted upon. One cannot assume that past theory is any better than current theory, or that future proven theory will be significantly different from current theory. Therefore it is important to acknowledge current facts, research more and find alternative explanations (if any) to the phenomenon.

It is matter of opinion whether current global warming theory is the "truth" that counters the common belief or is the current global warming theory the common belief that should be rethought. For me personally the common belief was/is that humans are not capable in changing the atmosphere dramatically and global warming theory actually shows that human activity has significant impact on our atmosphere.

One thing I can think of is that at least in Finland many home owners associations have taken a role in providing internet capability for everyone, similar to the trash pickup, water, electricity and cable. Of course for electricity and cable you can choose the provider but the infrastructure is already done inside the house. In my current apartment 1/1M connection is "free" (about 10EUR on HOA fee), 10/10M connection is 20 EUR/month extra and 100/10M connection is 30 EUR/month extra. All set up and ready to go, just plug in network cable to the wall. This cuts costs on all sides (no boxes to support) and allows lower maintenance fees as each individual won't be bothering the service provider. This also skews the charts as now everyone in the apartment has 1/1M connection even they might not use it.

The other point about subsidizing the network, I believe in Finland government does not significantly subsidize the network building for consumers. Backbone on the other hand is managed and built by government organizations, although I think that company is profitable as well. Main reason for the price drop and speed increase are the regulations that don't allow localized monopolies.

All the benefits are related to the expenses paid in creating the space station. You cannot pin these agreed expenses on some other country just because you feel the other country is also getting benefits out of the trip, whole reason of the joint venture is that everyone benefits based on their investment in the venture. If NASA really wanted someone to take responsibility of some part of its duties I'm sure it could be arranged, it would just mean that NASA would need to trade in some of the ISS benefits (astronaut time, research time) against that.

Surely this way the cult leader afforded nice living and was able to teach of the virtues and sacrifices in this life to his followers.

I don't think Stallman is evil, he is just a bit narrow and uncompromising in his world view. We just need to let time sort out the business models regarding open source and take reality more into account when making those models. There are several companies that are making their living in utilizing and even contributing in open source movement. Business models don't come around fast and current barriers with technologies (such as DRM) and other industry standards that are forced upon all companies needs to be solved.

I do think Nokia gets it. There is no other mobile phone company that does as much as Nokia does on Open Source platforms. Additionally most of Nokia phones can be purchased directly from Nokia site without SIM locks or operator limitations. Problem is that then current business models (SIM locks, DRM) are widely spread and Nokia cannot work with it's partners without having these technologies implemented.

I'm amazed to see how hostile this reaction was towards a company that does contribute quite a lot to Open Source community and tries to work out a working solution for the conflicts that are currently present. I would imagine other companies won't dare to venture into Open Source realm because of the hostility and uncompromising attitude. Taking reality into account might help sometimes.

Bottom line is that Nokia won't be using Open Source Software as much as it would like to due to these restrictions. In my opinion this is not only loss on Nokia's part but also on OSS community is losing it's breakthrough to wider market and crucial steps towards general openness. The demand to meet every and all OSS requirement is not currently possible now and OSS community alone cannot figure out steps that would bring society as a whole closer to the ultimate openness target. What Nokia (and Ari Jaaksi) in my understanding is trying to suggest here is that OSS would relax a bit on some deal breakers on manufacturers side and allow them to embrace OSS more. Alternatively we will end up completely closed source solutions and this opportunity to change society in large scale is lost for now.

    * Travel light (this is most important)

I did my travel around the world with 17kg package without computer or mobile phone back in 2001, even then backpack was heavy and troublesome in some occasions. Take 2kg + all the accessories more and it will take space from far more important items. In case you go for N810 it has small keyboard (not for great stories, USB keyboard for stories), GPS, WIFI, Skype (installable), webcam, and browser. Weight is about one fifth of what small laptop will be. The price is around 400 USD and best thing is that it runs Linux. Here is link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_N810

What you need to make sure is that your camera/video camera has the USB drivers and you are able to transfer pictures to your N810. I bet your pictures will be much safer if you upload them while in some internet bar or hostel, if unsure there are plenty of places where they can burn DVD for you. Most of the cities these days have working internet connections and transferring several hundred megabytes shouldn't be a problem. That is the key to frustrations, everyone assumed it will be discounted by EU launch or the holidays (I would have guessed by $100), which would give good 4-5 months time. Now the discount happend in 2 month time and it was significantly more than expected. Society has certain unwritten rules on how prices can be dropped without getting backslash, and this price drop was definitely too soon and too big.

To be honest I believe Apple got some sort of revenue share deal with AT&T (similar to what they got from European carriers) and it suddenly made financial sense for AT&T and Apple to discount the phone price. In Europe Apple gets 10% of the revenue iPhone generates, if same was done with AT&T then it would mean about $240 extra income for Apple during the lifetime of the contract, assuming $100 per month spending. Suddenly Apple has incentive to finance the price drop and get huge step closer to that 10 million iPhones sold mark.

Bottom line with the discount is that suddenly the mechanics how iPhone price is calculated got twisted and people before this overhaul were left paying substantially more than what the price should have been. iPhone should have started with $399 price and drop to $349 or $299 by Christmas, thats how the phone prices behave normally.
