  1. Freedom for people with disabilities and elderly on Google Secretly Tests Autonomous Cars In Traffic · · Score: 1

Don't forget the elderly and people with severe disabilities. Someone I care about has a disability and after a LONG LONG time, she is finally about to get a $127,000 car that she can drive herself. Cars for people with more severe disabilities are extremely expensive, but obviously necessary for jobs, and just to enjoy life in general. This is a real problem for the most vulnerable in our society that can be solved with autonomous vehicles.

I am no expert on the matter, but I was under the impression that chess is a problem that would benefit tremendously from quantum computer computations. I've read many sources online that claim this is the case, though none are academic papers. The staggering number of computations does not necessarily phase me because of how quantum computers work. Such staggering computations are more of a problem for classical computers.

  5. Completely Solve Chess on Separating Hope From Hype In Quantum Computing · · Score: 0

Quantum computers will bring an end to the competitiveness of AI vs Human chess games. They will be able to completely solve the game, meaning that they can produce a series of moves that will guarantee a win (or tie if the human player plays perfectly) from any position on the board. On the other hand, we will leap frog centuries of moore's law in bioinformatics algorithms. Goodbye protein folding problem!

150K is just way too high for people to afford. People who use wheelchairs don't represent a significant market force. Traditional capitalism will burn these people (see iBot). There needs to be a huge government investment in technology similar to this. Applying Laissez-Faire to this community is fucking cruel. Also, how much of the 150k is for parts? How many hours go into making one of these devices? What you're going to end up with is a lot of people who use wheelchairs are going to want one of these devices but are going to be SOL. We need one of these devices to cost no more than the typical car. Also, something about the video didn't makes sense. I suspect some not-so-clever marketing. People who use wheelchairs move the towels down to where they can reach them. If he uses this thing to fetch a towel, he has to get up in the morning and get into his wheelchair, transfer to REX, fetch the towel, transfer back into his wheelchair, and transfer into the shower. Why not just move the towels low enough to reach and save yourself a lot of time?

  9. Time to market on Robotic Audi To Brave Pikes Peak Without a Driver · · Score: 1

Something I find extremely frustrating when I read articles like this is why the delay in bringing products like this to market? If this car makes it up the peek and it is reproducible with a better chance of success than a human driver, and the same can be shown for regular driving conditions, then why isn't it being sold to people? Many older individuals who can no longer drive, or those with severe disabilities would benefit TREMENDOUSLY from this technology. Not to mention people like me who just want to reduce the probability of accidents on the road. I trust a highly optimized computer to be much more accurate at doing repetitive tasks like driving than I would a human in the same way that I trust the average computer to crunch numbers more than the average human.

  10. military vs helping people with disabilities on Military's Robotic Pack Mule Gets $32M Boost · · Score: 2

Something this technology can eventually do is help people with disabilities eventually get around without having to use a wheelchair. It would give people with disabilities the freedom to use robotic legs to be more self-reliant. I'm talking climbing stairs, getting in and out of cars without $25,000 modifications, and traversing airports independently. If you think going through TSA is bad now, imagine what they do to you if you need to go through with a metal chair. The problem that many people don't realize is that people with disabilities don't earn enough money to create a market for these things because of widespread discrimination in the job market for people with disabilities. This is one case where capitalism severely fails. We have the technology to very significantly improve the lives of many people with disabilities. In particular, there is a car that people without appropriate upper body strength can drive, but the damned thing costs $127,000. Combine that price tag with widespread job discrimination in even extremely qualified people with disabilities, and we are simply just teasing an already disadvantaged minority of people.

  11. Reason why ther is no MS cult on Why Doesn't Microsoft Have A Cult Religion? · · Score: 1

I have a different idea. There is no cult because Microsoft hasn't done anything new that is pervasive for the average computer user in how many years? Making new and unexciting changes to its movie player, office suite, and slowing down the Operating System for us doesn't elicit fanboyism. Look at Google, Google Earth, Google e-mail, google news, being able to IM without downloading a client. Not to mention they brought a new more consumer friendly philosophy to the mainstream. MS is trying to play catch-up but it stopped coming up with new ideas of its own. Apple gave us the iPod, iTunes, a beautiful and stylish OS and computers. What has MS done recently that is innovative?

Why don't we have a checklist available so that we can cross something out on the checklist every time progress is made. This way we can see exactly how much closer we are to getting QC to the market.

When a game is made EVERYTHING must be created by the game designers over and over again for each new game and prices soar. What we need is an open source project that gives game designers access to a world and characters they could use free of charge. They could then design the actual game and not waste time placing a tree here and a lake there. Someone should start an open source world, sort of like Wikipedia but instead of an encyclopedia it'll be an online world.

There are so many of us here, I was thinking that maybe someone can think of a way that all of us, as a group, can make more of a difference than just express our outrage to each other. It doesn't necessarily need to be about money (but it can).

It can be as simple as all of us going to another website and posting the highest rated opinions from slashdot onto their website so we wouldn't just be preaching to the quire. The money route can also be taken, every time a story is printed about an attack on the constitution, we all donate $5 to EFF. I don't know, what do you guys think? I guess it shouldn't surprise me that the media is ignoring this issue. They try hard to appear to look neutral. This means they have to ignore like 10 times more negative coverage about this administration than the opposition.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. People died for these rights. Human beings had to say goodbye to their girlfriends, wives, parents, and children forever in order to go die a likely horribly painful death. They did this because they believed there was some value in these rights. They sacrificed themselves so that the majority of us would, in privlige, enjoy the benefits of their sacrifice. Today, in this day and age and by not caring, we as a people are telling those TRUE patriots "You can take your sacrifice and shove it up your ass." Ironically, liberty and freedom are being attacked by the same people claiming to be inspired by it.
