apparently "think different" means "buy an iPod like everyone else."
I don't think Apple meant "buy an Apple product so you can become a minority." But since when were advertising slogans really insightful/truthful/accurate/meaningful/etc.? They're just a ploy to get you interested in shit, but usually just annoying for me. Really smart people are a minority, true, but so are really dump people. Ads are probably good for one satire comedy skit but then it gets old quick.
I don't really want to join the "no iPod is better! no Creative is better!" flame war. Whether iPod is good enough or not was a question that I pondered upon when I was looking for a new player. But after I've invested in a new player, I stopped bothering about comparing the latest product lines.
Now, you can get either a 30GB model or a 4GB model. That's a huge hole and forces a lot of people who only need 10GB's or so to jump up to 30. It's amazing marketing, although I'm sure it makes some (myself among them) resentful at being herded like that.
If you put it that way, it sounds like Apple is being very manipulative. However, if you look at the prices, the price difference is relatively not as drastic between the 4GB and 30GB models:
The ultra-small Sony Vaio laptops from 7 ~ 8 yrs ago also had built-in webcams. I played around with the Sony equivalent of Photobooth that Apple ripped off, and they weren't bad... Pretty entertaining for goofing off. I know some people I haven't seen me for years, so I might find video chat useful as well.
Oh yeah, and the vaios had Firewire (Sony called it i.Link) for the longest time as well, just like Macs! Sony's also selling thin, iMac-like home theatre PCs. Somewhat OT: I'm sure if Sony bought Apple, they would've gone nuts with it, as they already like adding esoteric software/hardware into their PCs.
Bookmarks can be sorted from the contextual menu, but now it only sorts one folder at a time. Firefox used to do global + recursive sorting, regardless of which folder the context menu came from. To many, this was an unexpected behaviour and too much of a change for an undoable edit, so the behaviour was modified.
I use ctrl-click a lot on my laptop... why don't they make more laptops with middle buttons?? =/
Better yet, why don't they make more software that don't require a middle button? I have my middle button programmed to do shift-click. Even with only two buttons, you can already get so much:
left click
right click (ctrl-click for macs)
ctrl click (cmd-click for macs)
alt click (alt/option-click for macs)
shift click
... and if you want more, you can always do combos like alt-shift-click, etc.
Maya for OS X was also guilty of *requiring* a middle button. (Comparatively, Firefox's case isn't as bad since their middle click feature is non-essential.)
Mozilla used to have a nice keyboard/mouse shortcut setup:
* shift-click == middle-click. * control-click (windows) == cmd-click (mac) == open link destination in new tab * control-enter (windows) == cmd-enter (mac) == open URL destination in new tab from the address bar * alt-click (windows) == option-click (mac) == download link destination * alt-enter (windows) == option-enter (mac) == download URL destination from the address bar
But the Firefox team f**ucked it all up because they decided that they needed to add some IE imitation, US-centric domain name typing shortcuts, even though you could add quicksearches with URLs that look something like http://www.s.com/ already.
Oh, and they decided that supporting users who don't have a "middle click" configuration for their mouse was out of the question. Gotta remove convenience from the software that previous developers worked to add in. Also, that annoying timed left-click contextual menu pop up is not likely to go away anytime soon in the Mac version. Yeah, I'll stick with Safari. Since I've hacked quicksearch functionality into it, I'm satisfied with it.
There are reporters and then there are scientists. TV news broadcasts may present you with fancy charts, however the scientists are usually not the ones who have time to make them. Just food for thought.
Also, I'll mention this since alot of climate prediction bashers seem to get it mixed up with weather prediction. Climate prediction and weather prediction are like apples and oranges because they use different approximation methods. Climate prediction is desinged to give close estimates of general changes in climate pattern spanning years, while weather prediction aims to be very accurate in the short term. Observing something about short term weather prediction doesn't necessarily mean you've made an intelligent observation about long term climate prediction methods.
Well, NASA was probably going to spend money on supersonic jets anyway, so which is better - NASA developing super sonic jets and not selling any, vs. developing them, then selling it to Japan for profit?
Also, only a few generations ago, air travel was enjoyed by only the richest. But now most people in developed nations can afford to fly at least once in their lifetime. Most technology that's expensive one day eventually drops in price. This is usually the case (people on/. should know this), however with airlines the main cost factor is fuel, which is a problem we are increasingly having trouble dealing with.
Azureus BitTorrent client has a plugin called SafePeer that blocks IP ranges based on a blacklist that is automatically downloaded. However, they can sometimes block around something like 60% of the Internet or more, plus some of the IP ranges that they block are pretty lame/dumb/inaccurate. Also it doesn't prevent the RIAA from logging in from any old broadband connection to access trackers w/o SafePeer or any other bozos of the ilk ever knowing. My suggestion: forget about IP address blocking. Go for an encryption solution or just go unencrypted and hope that you won't get hit by a lawsuit - the probability of that happening is negligable, maybe about the probability of getting hit by a lightning or less.
You can see the PR wordsmith at work here. By saying that they took into consideration the violence AND toplessness, they are satisfying both the people who want it banned because of the boobies incident and people who don't want it banned solely based on the boobies incident.
In either case, the gamemaker could have left some content off the disc, even if it were "locked out."
What the parent post and grand-parent post is missing in their comments is mention of whether they are using Macs with Intel Dual Core for Azureus. SWT (a component used by Azureus + Eclipse) haven't been ported to the Mac-Intel Architecture yet, and thus either requires Rosetta emulation or it just doesn"t properly work. It's been four months already, and still Adobe, SWT, all open source video players and Office suites haven't been ported yet to that platform. As you can see, this isn't a problem about Java, but a problem about applications switching to a new platform. If the Azureus team kept a 100% pure Java version of Azureus that used something like Swing, they wouldn't have to suffer the tradeoff that came with using JNI.
My old Sony VAIO never got as hot as my MacBook Pro does, and it is something that should be considered.
A MacBook Pro refers to a very specific PC, while VAIO can refer to several different kinds of PCs spanning years. For example, I doubt the MacBook Pro can be much hotter than the VAIO laptop I purchased way back in 1998.
Even if they are popular in India (they're certainly not in S Korea and Japan), the popularity of a player still doesn't explain the popularity of the website, unless -- and as stated elsewhere in other comments -- RealPlayer has something built-in that causes it to contact real.com each time a computer boots, etc.
I wonder which has been more of a shock for people - MySpace.com or Real.com making top 10.
Judging from the GP poster's command of English, maybe s/he really didn't know....but that still doesn't explain why Slashdot at work is OK but viewing a nude image somehow means automatically getting fired.
Unlike cars, East JR trains already run on electricity, not gasoline, so I'm not sure how much the old electricity/hydrogen vs. fossil fuel argument is valid in this case. These battery powered trains can reduce daytime stress on the overall electrical system by charging their batteries during the night time, when electricity from the grid is cheaper. The company has done experiments with Li-Ion batteries before.
I recall WinAmp didn't have as nice a support for multiple playlists. Although there were performance issues with iTunes, I'm not sure what the current states of WinAmp and iTunes are nowadays. However, I'd say WinAmp's Internet TV feature and WInAmp visualizations are worth checking out for new Windows users. I'm wondering if the Mac and Windows versions of iTunes could point to a Library folder located on a third shared FAT32 partition. I know both versions use non-esoteric file names and the same XML format, I just don't know if the non-human-readable binary file that accompanies the XML file is compatible.
For videos, VLC is good, but also one might want to get Windows Media Player. If one needs to play (or stream, for that matter) DRM-ed WIndows Media, they pretty much have to use a Microsoft OS. Also, MPlayer and Media Player Classic with CCCP are worth installing. If some players don't play some files smoothly or at all, just use another player. That's pretty much how it goes. Macs have traditionally been week in supporting WM* files. Now with the switch to Intel, most of the media players don't work on the new Intel Macs. So if you want to play anything without Rosetta emulation, with the exception of a small percentage of media files that can play on QuickTime/iTunes, you'll have to install Windows.
Of course, since probably over 600 comments have been made to this article, I'm sure my comment wil go unnoticed...

Basically, Apple can buy a larger harddrive per $$$ now. Why not offer this benefit when competing w/ others?
There are utilities out there (can't remember the name) that let you control-click for right click just like OS X on Windows.
I use control click to open links in new tabz in Firefox on Windows.

Thankfully they still haven't evolved opposable thumbs.
If Sci-Fi anime is any indication of what's to come, apparently they won't need to evolve opposable thumbs.
(That's Poipoider from Kenran Butohsai: The Mars Daybreak.)
Okay, let's do a comparison:
* Swing: cross platform
* SWT: cross platform
* Cocoa: not crossplatform
Hmm, this is a hard choice...

The iPod's sole purpose in life is to play music. So it plays music. Why should I need to know any more than that?
Because there's more to life than playing your music. Like caring about Earth, and your wallet.

Safari's considerably worse than Firefox or IE7 since it doesn't allow you to change the search engine without hacking the binary.
