How am I supposed to know what a forked version should be like if I don't discuss the matter with others? And if enough people agree and there's some sort of community agreement, then there is no noeed to fork it - change it from within. But I agree, sometimes some people have only stupid things to say, and they are the ones who should exercise some self control over what they have to say. Thanks for the vague advice.
Isn't this sort of thing illegal here in the states?
You can ride a hangglider, paraglider, or ultra light aircraft (basically, anything small/light enough), or go skydiving without any license whatsoever. If this thing gets popullar, though, there are going to be deaths. Flying isn't the same as riding a rollercoaster.
The amount of money spent is not so incromprehensible. People have been saying that, if done right, a country can reduce global warming gasses in a way that promotes economic growth. Currently, China, India, and others are consuming greater and greater "incomprehensible" amounts of fossil fuel, causing a very unusual situation in the atmosphere, unprecedented in recent history. Some optimists are forecasting that fossil fuel prices will be going down again soon -- we all hope this comes true, I'm not holding my breath. Generally, cleaning the air and reducing cases of asthma, for example, has obvious immediate benefits, as well as cutting our addiction to oil as much as possible so that our car-based economy does not take such a heavy blow with the latest continual rise in oil prices.
This is how spam works. Someone mass-sends an ad for something that 99.9% of the audience thinks is lame, but for some reason some idiot buys the product, making the whole scheme profitable. I actually have the external HD enclosure pictured in TFA (sans the fan, of course) which I bought more than 2 years ago - and it sucks. The enclosure doesn't allow the harddrive to go to sleep the entire time it power is turned on, and the case also rattles like crazy. I've seen the same external enclosure marketed under a zillion different names. They must be trying to avoid a bad rep, kind of like how Gator changed its name to Claria.
Hmm, that's rather interesting. The Ginza Apple Store elevator has zero buttons to push. It just continuously stops at every floor in a loop. I just assumed it would be the same for other stores as well..
What's up with the obsession with basements lately? Is every IT-related guy hosting Wayne's World? But anyway, I think the reason why social networking is more interesting is that since you have a cluster of users providing content, you're more entertained and more likely to find talented people. It's partly about easier navigability, which means that content you have taken the effort to create are is likely to be seen by more people. It's also partly about ease of content creation. This is what I experienced at everything2.com. People who wanted to simply write and not have to worry about the server backend or web design could easily just chug along.
I think what's safest is to either start with no anonymity, or assume that your anonymity will eventually be lost, and not put stuff or do stuff on the Internet that you would like to be identified with in the first place.
I don't think Web 2.0 has just one criteria. Slashdot did fit part of the trend in Web 2.0, but that doesn't mean Web 2.0 isn't more than what Slashdot has already covered.
They even list Grendel (last released in 1999) but they don't list SeaMonkey. Asses.

Well... that's very true! But the iPod accessory industry already produces software for converting video to something playable.
That being said, the iPod is not the end-all and be-all consumer product, because people have different needs. That's what the remaining 30% of the market is for.

What percentage of people actually use their consoles as a primary movie player?
My point exactly - I don't know either. It could be high, or it could be low. But one thing's for certain, which is that during my college years, two roommates of mine and two guests that frequented out flat didn't own a stand-alone DVD player for a time spanning at least three years. We all watched DVD out of the same PS2 player.
Oh, I get it. China has draconian law enforcement, except when said enforcement would make them look good in western eyes, because China is always evil, whenever they enforce or not enforce a law.
I don't mean to make absolute statements like all games are good and all TV shows are bad, those don't make sense. An example given to me was children playing board games -- It probably applies to MMORPGs as well. I wanted to point out that the interactive nature helps the brain develop in a benefitial way, according to the research.
Reading fiction or watching TV can actually be enriching and mentally stimulating, if you pick challenging things to read or watch. No MMORPGs can really say the same thing.
Actually, recent studies show that gaming gives the brain more mental stimulus than reading or watching TV because it requires a level of human interation. This is because the gamer has to try to figure out what the opponent's thinking. This type of stimulus helps prevent people from developing a short tempered personality.
'"Please, stop pointing out that while we brag about how much we love open source software, most of our exciting free applications are only available for Windows!"'
I'm not sure who says you're evil if your open source projects aren't exciting to you, but most of their OSS projects work OS neutral or for POSIX systems only, not Windows-only. (http://code.google.com/projects.html) They make most of their server stuff for server OSes, and most of their desktop stuff for desktop OSes. Oh no, they're making sense! Even Red Hat CEO claimed that Linux wasn't ready for the desktop.
Google folks don't understand why the rest of us have a problem with this
Who? Wha..? Who are these "the rest of us" that this guy speaks of? A similar phenomenon happens with Apple fandom sites. Basically, when a news site or reporter decides to focus only on one or two companies, s/he ends up not having enough news, and this causes a lot of frustration. And they usually end up going down the path of speculative reporting (which is usually really boring, long, and incorrect).

LOL! In China, it's 6-4. But I'm not even sure who you mean by "they" and "the rest of the world."
You know what's sad? Aeronautics majors in the States have to use non-metric for their calculations, which requires extra work.
well, wouldn't it? if ice floating in salt water melted, I think it would cause water levels to rise, since the ice has lower salinity.
