The problem with your theory about unemployment being good is that people aren't willing to pay others to sit home & monitor the Kardashians on TV.

I agree with the utopia you describe, but civilization is not at that point yet. When we have nearly free energy, cured most diseases, and figured out regenerative medicine. Then I may agree. But today, unemployment is a bad thing .. a VERY bad thing. It's detrimental to society, most unemployed people aren't retraining .. and who can blame them .. what are they to retrain for? Entry level jobs in the USA have been wiped out thanks to unions and the minimum wage. Even the minimum wage retail jobs want experienced people .. and unions are forcing extraordinarily high wages for the select few that have jobs.

I am in favor of unions, but not when they use their power to hold companies hostage especially after they've agreed to a certain wage already.

Instead of being able to hire 3 assembly line workers for $25K, a company is forced to hire one person for $80K. These means that the factory can only produce 1/3rd the amount of cars .. and THAT in turn means the car costs 3 times higher.

Now you will say "but how can a person live on merely 25K? ..that's not a living wage!" .. Here's the problem 25K is not a living wage because companies are forced to higher expensive workers! .. If workers were cheaper across the board.. the cost of production would reduce across the board -- and the price of energy will be the limiting factor.

The high minimum wage and unions, as currently operating, are destroying the country. The minimum wage needs to be reduced, and unions need to adjust their attitude. Second, the price of energy needs to be reduced drastically .. by a factor of 10. America will then see a 3% unemployment rate like South Korea. Or even 2% like Singapore. Furthermore, actual quality of life will be improved.

Why can't more banks be incentivized to give loans to people for their education? Student loans are given out in anticipation of the fact that these students will graduate and pay back the loan (directly or indirectly). Both banks and students have an interest in ensuring that students major in something that's in demand .. instead of losing 13 cents on every dollar given out as student loans. I doubt any private student loan institution is losing money on the student loans they've given out.

  15. Noo! on Ask Slashdot: Physical Input Devices For Developers? · · Score: 0

No, don't use knobs .. what's wrong with using a 2nd display .. with a touch based UI (put them on a second screen .. you can buy cheap QVGA touchscreens and drive it with a $25 raspberry pi computer) ..use the color of the knob or slider to depict its value too (red for low, green for high, with shades in between).. don't make it an ugly 2D bitmap .. just use a nice 3D-looking button. The advantage is that you can easily make the knobs that are unneeded disappear when you are not using them. They are also easy to customize. If you need tactile feedback .. use vibration .. if the user is moving the setting beyond that recommended vibrate the screen and/or show a popup (maybe temporarily depending on what they are doing .. have the popup disappear on its own if they revert or its unnecesary etc.).

If you have a bunch of physical knobs, it's hard to tell by glancing what all the knobs are set too .. whereas if you have a second display unit that shows in colorized sliders/knobs .. it's easier.

An example of this is the fact that there were some patents on HDTV technology that was recently granted though the filing date was 1990something .. the lawyers managed to tack on 10 years to the 20 years from filing patent expiration date.
