  1. how common is this "abnormality"? on Bigger Brains Make Smarter People Study Says · · Score: 1

I thought cephalization was disproved ages ago.

I am not buying this bird brained theory at all, without proof. How do we know small brained people aren't mistreated or not encouraged to learn in society? For example, I'm really tall and people always tried to make me play basketball. Frankly all of this "intelligence" studies are not scientific at all. There are lies, damn lies, and statistics.

I believe gravity exists. Why? Because every time I try dropping an apple, it falls. That's scietific. Maybe not as rigorous as a mathematical proof, but it's pretty close to one.

Now, if you prove there is an equation that nobody with a small brain can solve. Or a memory test that nobody with a small brain can pass (and 100% pass rate for big brains, mind you).
I'm willing to even allow combinations of the test. If there is one failure, then then please all you have is some statistics without a cause. That is, the large brain can be ruled out as being a cause of high intelligence. Maybe you can look at something else? Neuron count? I dont know.

Personally, I have tried to look into the whole this stuff and never found anything remotely scientific proving any genetic correlation to intelligence.

Find me an equation or memory test that a person with XYZ trait cannot solve. Even better, isolate the gene or group of genes that define or enhance a specific quality (creativity, memory ability, info processing etc). Also, you have to define a "math" or "intelligence" test for these genes or physical traits will assuredly (100+%) pass. Otherwise don't tell me you have proof.

I remember a white guy in high school told a black kid "You're a n****r and n*****rs are stupid" ... the kid's (who had a 4.0 btw) reply back was "I don't know about that, but I sure as hell know one thing .. I'm black and I'm way smarter than you!"

  4. Re:We need the Fair Tax on CA State Offers To Prepare Simple Tax Returns · · Score: 1

Simply put, the FairTax replaces the way we're currently taxed - based on our annual income - with a tax on goods and services. The FairTax is a voluntary "consumption" tax: the more you buy, the more you pay in taxes, the less you buy, the less you pay in taxes.

That might sound simple, but what do you mean by buy? If I employ you ,, Am I buying your service? Which means I will have to deduct tax from your paycheck (isnt that what happens today?). So maybe ultimately it works out to the same thing.

  5. Re:We need the Fair Tax on CA State Offers To Prepare Simple Tax Returns · · Score: 1

Maybe by some definitions the "fairest" tax is one that asks the people to pay a fixed cash amount.

    Regardless of income.

That is, rather than a percentage of income, each person should have the responsibility of paying a fixed amount (dont panic, the amount will probably be the same or less than you pay now anyway).

This way the government doesnt have to know about and sit in between every transaction between humans.

How will the poor pay etc? Well, if you are poor through no fault of your own (ie, you aren't lazy .. there just arent any jobs). Then you will have to justify not paying the full amount somehow, or get on some payment plan.

That's how it works for credit and loan repayments right?

  8. won't beat ipod for now on Review of iRiver iFP-899 · · Score: 3, Insightful

Music players won't beat ipod until two things happen:

    1) they are priced dramatically lower than iPod (think 25% of the cost of one).

    2) Songs can be purchased easily from places other than iTunes. Think Google (type in a song or artist name and it says "buy this song") or Microsoft (with their "Plays For Sure" thing). Microsoft is now entering this space so it'll be interesting to see what happens.

Of course ideally DRM would just be a couple of bits set in an id3 tag. Players would just comply with it. With Open DRM, independt folks can sell their music without going through a third party like iTunes who wants a cut. Yes, it can Open DRM can easily be haxx0red or editted out, but honestly I dont think a vast majority will bother. At least not for songs where they appreciate the artists work. I mean, itunes has sold nearly 200 million songs, in spite of the existence of P2P networks. Clearly not everyone will pirate good songs they like and appreciate.

Well, supposedly people need to be held "in communicado" or whatever cause it will undermine the war on terror.

That's all fine and dandy .. i never really fought a war on terror and maybe that's what needs to be done to terrorists.

But it is undermining freedom to hold innocent people and also it undermines peace to have a reputation as a big bully who runs around abusing people ..sort of how Stalin killed a bunch of people for the common good .. we don't need to go killing humans for freedom .. so here is what the Bush administration needs to do.

    1) Publish a list of criteria that gets someone thrown into Guantanamo. (Are people put in there because someone (just anybody) files a complaint against them? Are people put there for breaking curfew even if they are not carrying weapons? Right now nobody has any idea of how someone ends up in Guantanamo .. A good first step would be to publish an inambiguous list as to why people are put in there. Cause quite frankly it isn't clear at all.

    2) .. if the military is keeping people in prison without being sure if they are guilty or innocent .. at least they shouldn't torture or abuse or traumatize them ..cause it may be being done to an innocent person ..which is plain wrong any way you slice it .. if you are OK with innocent being tortured .. how would u feel if it was someone you really cared about?

Well ok .. these two steps will go a LONG way to resolve the situation seriously .. I was going to write a step 3 .. I mean it would be great to give 'em trials etc. but this debate is being had already and the people who believe in trials are losing.

So that means with 220 million teraflop CPU (or collection of cpu's?) a whole brain can be simulated. One would imagine that the software and architecture matters as well ..if a monster computer with 220 million teraflops is built .. is human processing entirely parallellizable? If not can it be partially parallelized to work on such a large system?

I remember looking at a page on a website (mit?) that attempted to figure ou t the maximum amount of compuitation a brain does (based on the physical limits of interaction and heat). Our brain does mad computation at just 25 to 50 watts. I forget the number the arrived at .. somebody google it. Mind you it didnt take into effect quantum theory and the fact that you can do entire calculations in one interaction (ie, if todays system of logic gates needs 10 cycles to do a fourier transform it's possible a neuron only needs one etc).

How much computation can one neuron do ..Surely it's more than just a gate. Can a neuron be constructed out of silicon? if so .. how much die area is needed? It seems if we can shrink down to the molecular transistor level we may be able to put 100 billion "silicon neurons" on a large silicon die. The whole CPU may end up being the size of the entire silicon wafer. So basically .. we need to understand a) are all neurons made equally? b) What the hell does the damn thing do exactly and how do we make logic gates that do the same thing and communicate it across digitally instead of analog like a neuron might?

Also, by forcing developing nations to reduce their energy usage .. they are preventing affordable irrigation technology from being utilized. Even desert land can be irrigated by desalinated sea water. This method can result in a lush green Sahara (instead of the desert of today). This is technology we have today .. Israel supplies 30% of the Negev's agricultrual water from salty sources.

Africa needs to be allowed to industrialize. And yes, this includes allowing African countries to have fusion power plants.
