Because the FBI didn't exist before 9/11? The FBI hunts down criminals that break federal law or are high priority, Arsonists, mass murderers etc. They also deal with Organized Crime in the country. I'll give that the CIA was founded to prevent terrorism by Truman but the FBI was about 39 years before the CIA. They only recently, post 9/11, have a national security branch that has a primary directive of counter terrorism.

The game company has the potential to lose but Nintendo has nothing to lose by allowing mods. I still have to buy the console before I put the chip in to it. They shouldn't care what I do with it after I buy it from them, sure they can come up with a way to make it so I can't use a burned disc online to try to make sure I'm not pirating a game. It would end up like PC games, I can pirate the hell out of it and play by myself or on a lan but if I try to go online it says sorry no can do until I put in the real thing. Problem solved for 90% of the people.

Except that the main reason I would plug my MP3 player in to someone else's computer is to either play music on their sound system or to share music with them.

I'm thinking the sharing music with friends is the part that Apple would actually be deterring with this. If they made it a mandatory "feature".
I also use a Zen because having my MP3 player show up as a hard drive where I can just drag and drop files to and from it makes it a whole hell of a lot more useful and easier to back up.

I don't need a 3rd party program to let me put music on my mp3 player.

The second right is to stop paying if the service provided isn't good enough. You would really list that as a "right" in an article about cell phones? Right, last time I checked my early termination fee could cost me almost as much as keeping my cell service until the end of my contract. There's no such thing as not paying a cell company if you want to be able to buy anything major in the next 10 years of your life. Yay for credit being based on random criteria.

Microsoft doesn't follow the general rules of business. Every other product on the market drops in price as either a new version comes out, or it gets paid off through purchases, but M$ keeps charging full price and ends up making probably a minimum of 10x more than they would if there were (real,in the sense of widely used) competition and they had to lower the price eventually.
