What's going to go in that 256 MB though? No modern OS can fit in there except a stripped down Linux or BSD, and if this is for mainstream use most people won't be running those. Using it as swap space or/tmp would degrade it quickly even with the newer, longer-lasting materials. So what can this be used for?
It's not that they made a product that appealing...it's that the one they made afterwards was such a pile of shit that people would rather stick with the previous one. It's the choice between being punched in the mouth and told to say "thank you," and being beaten up, stripsearched, raped, and *then* told to apologize for taking their time.
Even if the 6% figure were true, it's still three times more than a previous article's citation for the corporate adoption rate of Windows Vista =P So GPLv3 can't be that much of a turd.
Ballmer said that analysts should consider that rather than creating huge spurts of new growth "a new Windows release is primarily a chance to sustain the revenue we have".
Translation: "Oh fuck. Oh FUCK. Oh fuck oh fuck OH FUCK! We were riding on this being bigger than Jesus^H^H^H^H^H XP and no one's taking! Even our OEM monopoly isn't working! WE'RE GOING TO LOSE THE FUCKING HUGE PROFITS! OUR GOD-GIVEN RIGHT TO HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN PROFIT IS BEING ABRIDGED! *the sky darkens with a cascade of office chairs*
...I, for one, can't exactly say I feel sympathetic. And I hope Ballmer's spoiled, egotistical, megalomaniacal, borderline-psychopathic heart bursts in his chest during one of his little temper tantrums. What are you gonna do now Steve, "fucking kill" all the evil people who aren't buying this polished turd of a DRM-fest you have the balls to call an OS?
Is it because they don't understand the issue, or because they're being paid off? Neither bodes well. I'm trying not to assign to malice what can be explained by incompetence (*cringe*) but I wonder...
Long answer: They are scared to *death* of anything resembling an open standard because their entire business model is based on vendor lock-in and proprietary formats. They're not even trying to hide it anymore (though with 99+% of people being as uninformed as they are, MS doesn't really have to...).
Mod me flamebait or troll if you must, but the BSD license allows others to take code and use it as they see fit, provided that they include the original creators in the credits, doesn't it? All that's happening here is GPL devs doing what Microsoft, Sun, et. al, have done for years and years. You would have to be an idiot to think this would never happen.
The BSD license, to me, is a wonderful but tragically noble thing, because people will do this to it. Leaving aside questions of who has the moral high ground, the BSD license lets people do this sort of thing. If the BSD people don't like it, they need to change the license, or suck it up. It's probably not fair or right, but the license allows it.
Tear gas? You're very polite. I was thinking something more along the lines of napalm...or how about a flechette gun loaded with shards of broken DVDs? A tar pit would be fine too, and very appropriate...
In other words, they'll jam their fingers further into their skulls via their earholes and shout "La la la, I CAN'T HEAR YOUUUU, puh-RAAAAAZE beee to the Lawwwwwwd JAY-zuz Christ!"
I started using castille soap last year. It's available in most health food stores, and Dr. Bronner's brand even has the distinction of being Fair Trade (if you can handle the weirdness on the labels...). I was skeptical at first, but the stuff really works and I feel very clean. It works as shampoo too, and doesn't leave behind that oily, sticky film regular bar soap does when you try that.
...actually, you can use it as mouthwash after brushing too, though it tastes truly foul at the back of your throat.
...but if this is as big a disaster as I think it will be, hopefully it will be a case study of what *not* to do for the rest of the world. I feel very sorry for China, and this only makes it worse.
between "respect" and "like." I respect Microsoft like I respect a psychopathic killer with a lot of money who's made his way into public office (no, not Dick Cheney). In this case, the "respect" means "understand that they're here to stay, and that they're not completely hopeless. If for no other reason than that there's no patch for human idiocy, Microsoft's marketing and cash will ensure that it stays in the market for a long time."
Buy, buy, buy! I don't think DRM is in "critical condition" at all, but now is our chance to show these people that we *will* buy their product if they don't treat us all like criminals. We may be able to make a small but important piece of history here.
Would you let Microsoft in the OSS pool? I sure as hell wouldn't, for the same reason I wouldn't let someone in my swimming pool who has a history of malicious urination. Adult swim, creeps; out of the pool!

...does it run Lin...oh, never *mind*
Quit feeding her Laerma Nuts and that should stop happening. ...if you get that reference I love you.

I believe it was format C:
Might want to have a Linux LiveCD handy...you needed it before that command, but you'll *definitely* need it afterwards.

What makes you think anyone who could get their hands on one of these cares what the laws say?
> Huh? Since when are Republican legislators the Democrat's constituents?
You're a loon if you don't think the two major parties are basically the same under the surface...
"Hey, sorry our stuff didn't work! And that you can't get your money back! Here's virtual money to spend on more of our crap!"

I don't think ISPs are common carriers though...hasn't this been discussed a few times?

The same way evolution and the round earth did.

...that this is their version of "people-ready?"
Oh, that's right, only large corporate customers are people. Everyone else is a "consumer." Serves you all right if you ask me.

If they do this for GMail, are they going to call it BlackMail? Maybe just BMail for short? I have a bad feeling about that...
