Oh look, we're all getting modded down. I love how these moderators work. I replied with a clear subject to a certain reply (not the parent article) and get modded down for asking a question. Then someone tries to answer it, and they get modded down. To hell with my karma. I really like slashdot, I like discussing in the forums. I like reading what everyone has to say about "breaking news", and I love the "back and forths" that take place. This kind of moderation kills that. I know that I am repeating what a lot of posters have been saying for a long time, but screw you moderators. Rather than bitch like sig_11 i think im just going to accept the fact that my karma is going to be near zero. I'm starting to realize that if something is put up for mass review on some website, like those popular self-photo rating websites, the more people that rate the material the lower rating the material will get. Thats the new slashdot effect. Disgruntled geeks who think their shit dont stink. im done now
If Napster is no longer available for free (actually no acticles state their free service is ending), then you can forget about having a program you can use to find any song, anytime.
The beauty of napster is the sheer number of songs available. If there is a membership thing implemented, then a lot less people are going to be connected, sharing their files. The huge selections of songs is going to melt to a tiny fraction of what it once was.
I don't know you personally, so I don't know what kind of person you really are. But this is so Katz-esque. Like a suicide note, begging and begging for sympathy! Spare me!
If anyone knows where to get some good zelda (music!) please reply. I'm sure you all agree, Zelda (music) haunts us all, 15 some-odd years after it came out.
I never did figure out what was behind the last "book" included in The more than complete hitchhikers guide. It seems a young zaphod showed up in section zz9 plural z alpha and made everything secure. What in the world was going on there?
I think your box would be awesome if it had a CD rom drive included. The rom drive could read MP3's I recorded at home (you can fit like 250 mp3's on a 650MB CD) and also regular store bought (and copied!) audio CDs. This way your stereo would be very versatile. I don't know how beneficial it would be to include a hard drive in the thing or a place to stick a "memory stick" like device. Im convinced CDs are the best way to store and play mp3s.
Even though these types of cash sales for virtual items aren't widespread enough to effect the economy, I wonder what kind of impact it would have if it was amplified by a great factor.
This type of transaction is especially interesting because if you do buy a magical item, you're not really buying anything but a few modifications to your user identity. I guess it's kind of like buying software addons, but it's somewhat different.
What do you, my fellow dotters think? Please reply,/. is my primary source of entertainment.:)
No one ever thinks of any kind of ramafications other than economical. What's wrong with all of you people??
When deciding about the governent taking control of NASA, all anyone is thinking about is tax dollars and efficiency, money well spent, etc etc.
I do agree that the economical workings of NASA will have some effect on how the govt will fund them in the future, but..
If the government can't fund them, I don't think they should exist. All we need are a bunch of money hungry investors pumping lots and lots of cash into private programs, and eventually what you get is rampant commercialism out in space. Ever heard of the Internet? Even computers in general? Not to say that the economics leading up to today's internet and computer software were bad for the industry and the concepts as a whole, but look how commercial it all is, ads everywhere and a few elite owning most of the shares and influence.
If the space program is allowed to get as commercial as these industries, you can expect to see stunning, disgusting parallels between your space program the industries mentioned.
Saftey and use of large scale (high energy even a good term?) technologies and development of projects is another thing I wouldn't want a large corporation to handle.
I love space, I love space exploration, I dream just like the rest of the geeks out there, but I want this industry to develop as non commercially as possible. When technologies are prefected and situations normalize, then we can have private projects.
No more ranting, what I propose is altruism, that is large corporations donating money to NASA. The government may even be able to conpensate these investors with use of their technologies (software? whatever).
I don't think it would be a good idea to privatize NASA. There are some advantages as (you noted and as noted before); better funding, better salaries to entice better workers...
The disadvantages to a private NASA are few but are very important. I would think that this private agency would be one motivated by profit and less by pursuit of knowledge. This would probably affect certain decisions made by project managers. While NASA does work under tight budget constraints, its goal in conducting exploration missions is the collection of data for public distribution. I can forsee a private company claiming ownership of, lets say...rock samples collected by a lander.
If NASA was privatized but still retained some government control, I think it would be better off. I think the government still should regulate who has rights to building massive rockets carrying tons of highly explosive materials. The government should also claim public ownership of any scientific discoveries made by these exploration missions. Heck, I'd hate to finally make it to the red planet someday just to see flags with the microsoft logo on them planted in the dust.
To say all government is evil and detrimental is silly
Yeah, they found channels with their nifty billion dollar systems paid for by your tax dollars.
They may even be formed by water millions of years ago, look at your wonderful tax dollars at work!
While I don't discount the possibility of water ever existing on mars, I see this as all highly circumstantial evidence. The article was written only to show the successful projects nasa has created to collect information about mars. The article lacked any convincing evidence that the channels were formed by water. If no good scientific data was sighted, why should we beleive nasa may have proven the previous existince of water on mars?
What a timely press release of this data collected in 1997. A little late? Public begining to doubt the need for a space program?
Anyhow, tirade aside, I believe the space program is a great investment, mars is a great investment and we should continue to appropriate large amounts of funds for larger furture projects (terraforming 2099 baby!). But this article just seems to be a lot of sensationalism and numbers, abbreviations and dazzling technology specs to dupe joe public from brooklyn. Like my arch nemesis signal11 seemd to point out, those channels could have been created by magma.
It is pretty neat that we can look at caves under mars' surface though. I sure am proud.
That level of commercialism is disgusting... Don't look at it. Mr Adams is making his money, what's wrong with that? So what if he's using Dilbert to sell it? He (possibly) invented this burrito, he used his intellectual capital, now he wants to sell it. I don't see how or why you call this disgusting.
I'm not a big fan of Katz, nor do I loathe him. Here are a couple of reasons why Katz shouldn't be writing for slashdot.
I'm not going to attack Mr Katz or anything. But something must be said for his writing and Slashdot's tenacious cling to his name. I haven't read all that much Katz but I've seriously read enough to notice he makes sweeping generalization after sweeping, ignorant generalization. His articles are too long and way too full of fluff to be considered useful.
We all know why generalizations are bad, and probably all of the Slashdot community knows how it produces bad writing. The community knows the lives of it's members, it knows that while we all like to spend time using our computers, our time is very limited and long, dramatic articles with very little factual value are useless and contribute to the amount of noise (yes, i do realize that I am doing just that now, but I am not a feature writier, I am keeping my opinion where it belongs, in a slashdot reply).
I'm not going to sit here on my lazy, biligerent troll butt telling you why I think John Katz is a terrible writer, but I am going to tell you that his style of writing and the content with which he fills his articles doesn't belong here at slashdot. I'm going to speak for the community at large here, we don't need his types of opinions, opinions that we all already form as first reactions, or opinions that we all dismiss in the first ten or 15 seconds after reading a bit of news.
Slashdot should stick to producing articles that are short and contain well, i'd say %85 fact. Let all the opinions breed and mutate in the replies. Users who wish to filter out noise never find themselves in the replies section browsing opinions, they form their own from the articles themselves. I'm not saying opinions are useless (they can be more useful than the actual facts they're based on) but they certainly should be segregated as much as possible from fact in a publication such as this.
A good example is voices from the hellmouth. While I think that Katz really has his finger on the pulse of each and every one of us geek readers here in his articles, I strongly believe that hellmouth has no business here on slashdot (as is the case with many other katz articles). His writings belong in magazines like rolling stone, like playboy, his appearances belong on TV shows like good morning america, like oprah. He is so obvious and non informative to geeks that his articles and opinions tend to be extremely redundant. They are still very valuable, but should target an audience that needs "dumbing down" when it comes to explaniations of geek lifestyle and mindset.
Above all else, above my utterly insignificant and meaningless opinion, there is the opinion of the slashdot community at large. This opinion, bottom line, states that slashdot readers do not want to read any more Katz. While this magazine is the property of all our well known, furry slashdot editors, I think they have an obligation to their readers. They too were once voiceless geeks, that's probably why they created slashdot in the first place.
I tried to keep this as rant free and focused as possible, but if I digressed, I want you to know my main point was to show how Katz's articles really don't belong here and how slashdot's editors really need to start reading the replies at the end of his article posts.
