You don't. Lots of people do. I've inadvertently sold lots of Powerbooks just by using mine in front of people. You'd be surprised what a sexy aluminum case with a light up apple on it and lots of eye candy in your OS will do.

Most purchasing decisions aren't based on what the neighbor of the CEO or head of IT is running.

You might want to read the documentation for a solution before you recommend its use. Just a thought.

Nobody notices a speed improvement when running Gentoo. Even throwing out GNOME and replacing it with Blackbox (which is cheating, by the way) doesn't make up for the fact that your CPU is pegged at 100% 24/7 compiling shit.

I've never used SUSE, but I'm pretty sure all you have to do to get the source for your kernel is install the readily available kernel source RPM.

Not installing this by default is, IMHO, a good thing since the kernel source is relatively hefty when unpacked.

Of course I could be wrong about this. If so, the kernel is GPL. If you paid for it and they won't give you the source then you should let the FSF know.

That said, I'm sure this isn't the case.

You're absolutely correct. My isolated case isn't at all an indicator of overall problems with Apple quality. Way to go, AC :).

That said, problems with Apple build quality seem to be fairly widespread.

I rather like my Powerbook, even though it's currently en route to an authorized Apple repair center (remember, buy AppleCare for god's sake). I'm honestly not trying to slam Apple (like I could get away with that on /.). I just needed a place to vent my frustration publically, and this was as good a place as any.

Apple makes such elegant machines, with such a nice OS. So much so that I'm happy to fork over another $1000+ compared to an equivalent x86 laptop. I just wish as much thought was put into their component selection and system reliability.
