  1. Re:Suppose... on Canada's Copyright Cops Give Go-Ahead For iPod Tax · · Score: 1

Here is an idea for Canada tax any DVD player capable of playing a burned DVD/CD or the DivX, XviD, MP3 and WMA formats. What percentage of that is not piracy related. Lets tax DVD/CD burners, not just the media. Lets tax hard drives over some arbitrary size while we are at it. All this piracy would really be reduced a ton without the internet, lets put a piracy tax on that. Then tax the ISPs and backbone providers, router makers, ethernet cables, etc..

At one time the FTP protocol was used a lot for piracy, today it is not as common. People download virtually all their torrents, cracks and smaller things through HTTP. Newsgroups are just a vast piracy playground.. tax that? Are you already taxing blank cassette tapes & DAT tapes?

Lets tax any backbone provider that gives access to Sweden, Russia, China, etc and a few other countries. Lets make ISPs block access to known torrent sites, torrent programs, etc. Tax World of Warcraft for using P2P, not really..

It is all arbitrary and quite lame. Tax an iPod which runs the #3 (i believe and climbing) music seller in the world, something to that effect. I am no iPod fan, i wouldn't own one personally and I dont live in Canada, makes it easier to not understand the logic, besides money. Its all about the money!

I prefer my ISP not block anything period. I dont want my ISP determining what ports, what services, websites, etc that I can use. ISPs to me should simply provide me with internet that is all. If they are providing e-mail they can have whatever spam/anti-virus/etc stuff they want on it, since im not using it anyways. I'm not installing their 'software' if they have any. etc. All i want is a ethernet plug that through whatever magical means gets the 'internet to me'. I will take care of the rest.. but i know i am not their 'mainstream' customer.

Blocking port 53 and 80 is a temp measure which will just make them use another port, the next ports they use you wont be able to block. Just off the top of my head I would use a port between 1024 and 5000. I believe that is still the default random ports windows uses, you cant block those ports without stopping a ton of every day internet programs from working. im sure there is other ports, either way, solves nothing and the next versions will be using ports you can not block.

Botnets will just evolve. The ISP blocking things isn't the answer, very often. I would say anti-virus software, firewalls, and really eduction would be a much better mix to cut down on this. ISPs can help stop a major worm or something from spreading here and there depending on the circumstances, but usually they are too late in trying to stop that sort of thing.

Also ISPs can just cut peoples internet off till they fix their PC if it is causing that much of a problem, which they do, but usually only in the case of spam. Road Runner cut off a customer I know after about 6 months of having a 'spam bot' of some sort on his pc. I told the guy about it a few months ago, but his PC still worked so he didn't care till his internet was cut off, still took them long enough, they had reports of his IP several times going back at least 5 months.

I ran the most basic search once on a person i could, ended up with their SSN, last 5 addresses, current vehicles, the fact they had some medical license, all phone numbers, etc all in 3 pages printed out.. I know people here might not think much of that, but too many of every day people dont think twice about giving out their birthday or sending in some of the crap they do to companies who just sell the info.

But I have been to many EU countries and Canada. Medication sure is cheaper, on top of general universal health care. Downside from what I have seen is waiting lists depending on the country. In New Zealand I knew someone on a waiting list for a few years to get their tonsils removed, but if it would have ever became a serious issue they would have done it right then and just like in the US they could have just paid to have it done then. From what I saw New Zealand was struggling a bit economically. Canada seemed better, as well did Britain, I have never been to France, Germany, or the other EU countries.

The Medicare Part D plan here in the US seemed not help, possibly made things worse. My grandmother has to spend $500 to $1000 a month on medication, that is quite hard on most people of her age. One of my dads good friends went bankrupt paying his late wifes medical bills, then later committed suicide. Talk about 'if you can afford it' if you ever get diagnosed with something expensive enough to ruin most people.

I would recommend people switch to DSL IF they have problems down here and dont have another choice. The slightly higher packages on DSL here was the best internet I ever had at some points. However here we dont have the option to switch to cable company #2, and a T1 is only around 1.54mbit up/down, still a good service but quite expensive compared to dsl/cable.
