  1. No Frequency on Wireless "Pulse" Technology · · Score: 1

Everyone posting here should realize that if they talk about frequencies with regard to this broadcast technique, they are probably wrong.

The signal has *no* frequency. It's just a pulsed radio wave, and will interfere with any other radio signal.

The reason why this is so cool is because it is easier to understand. The closest analogy is Morse code. If you have an incredibly noisy channel that has so much static where you could never understand a voice, you might still be able to understand Morse code because it takes much more interference to obliterate that signal.

The major benefit of using this technique is that everyone will be able to broadcast on whatever frequency they choose. Currently, devices like cordless phones need to run at 27 MHz or 900 MHz. Broadcasting at any other frequency at any other power would interfere with radio, and is illegal. That's because your cordless phone transmits at a relatively high power itself.

Make the signal a pulsed signal, and instead of 100 milliwats of power, you only need maybe 1 milliwatt of power (just speculating). That power level will never interfere with a conventional radio signal, so you can just broadcast without worry. Everyone can run a home network, and it's secure, fast, and reliable.

A MAJOR benefit of this technology is the low power levels. Charge your cell phone, and don't worry about charging it again for the next 6 months. And that's with 8 hours usage a day. Just like frickin' LCD watches and calculators.

Hell, just last night I was completely unable to get my wife's fax modem working with some crappy piece of software. It kept giving me undefined error messages, and the help system was written for retards. When I'd print 9 pages to the FAX printer, the FAX software would always say it was sending 2 pages.

My wife got really pissed at me because I kept repeating over and over "Linux has only ONE fax program that I know of, and it just works."

I hope that Microsoft stays clueless. It might not happen. Remember when Bill Gates suddenly "got" the internet and MS turned on a dime and consumed the competition in a few months? Right now MS is acting cluelessly. That might not be true next month. Is MS even capable of ever understanding free software? I'll bet that MS is not, and that they never truly understand what's eating them up.

Linux (and Apache) are widely used for small sites, but if you check out the large sites like Sears, KMart, etc. you will see that Linux hasn't arrived yet. Seriously, I agree that the invention computer is an important event, but I think it has been hyped too much. The computer doesn't add anything that wasn't around 100 years ago, it just lets us do things faster.

On the other hand I don't think the significance of the open source philosophy has been hyped enough. Love him or hate him, RMS has enriched all our lives as much as any other great person in history. The same can be said of Linus, and probably several hundred others.

But, the BEST thing about this revolution is that we can all be generals. It's not a cult of personality phenomenon, but an egalitarian evolution. If you want to jump into the center of the storm, that jump is yours to take. The center of the open source storm is large enough for everyone to contribute to. Andy Warhal said that in the future everyone would be famous for 15 minutes. Well, the open source revolution has turned that into a parallel process. Everyone in the future will be famous for 15 minutes *all at the same time*. (The future is now).
