I was just PC-shopping, and saw quite a few $600 PC's. While most under-$1000 PC's use on-board Intel graphics, there's a big 'gotcha' in the $600 range: No AGP or PCI-Express slot!

A lot of people buying in this range could get a nasty surprise if they find they have a need for a better graphics-controller.

I guess it depends on who created the USB driver that iTunes uses to talk to the ipod. I was assuming that it was Apple, but maybe I'm wrong.
I'm no fan of MS, but I do know that a bad driver can crash an OS.

My experience with my daughter's Ipod Mini has not been overwhelmingly positive:

On Windows XP, syncing to it in ITunes (via USB) causes Windows to reboot about half the time.

On Linux, syncing more than a few songs at a time (in gtkpod) causes a bunch of hardware errors, resulting in the partition being set to read-only. (So I guess Linux is a little more robust in dealing with hardware problems.)

Exactly. But the waiting time could be significant. I usually do my own minor plumbing repairs because waiting for a plumber to show up could take half a day, a lot more time than my own fix, say 2 hours, even though the plumber gets it done in 10 minutes.

If 50% are wrong, then 50% are right. So if I write a scientific paper, the chance of it being right is 1/2. And if I write the same paper, say, 8 times, the chance of it being right at least once is 255/256.

I think I'll write that paper on statistics.

It's somewhat telling that you were pleased that it ran just as fast as XP on the same system. On my Linux box, when I upgrade the kernel or even KDE, I generally expect better performance than before. I get the impression that OSX users expect the same.

A lot of highly-talented people have applied for dozens of jobs over many months without getting any replies; so a little bitterness in a Slashdot post may be justified.

One thing I've noticed: Practically every ad for game-programmers has the requirement, "Must have a passion for games."

This doesn't sound unreasonable, but it isn't something one sees in other industries. For example, I've worked in EDA for about 15 years, but nobody's ever asked me if I have "a passion for Verilog".
