    Security is a circle. If you make it too hard, the person will just write out all the steps (including the passwords) on a legal pad and keep it in their briefcase.

    Good luck getting any serial port app to work correctly in Windows 7. We've never been able to.

    I bought a 286 in 1990. By 1992, 8088s were ancient.

  5. I worked at a company where they were 8 years into a 2-year mainframe migration. And they had halted all mainframe development for over 5 years. I hear they are just about done, 3 more years later.

    Back when Fortran came out, keyboards weren't standardized yet. Also, some systems used variations of 7-bit or even non-ASCII encodings like EBCDIC. The > symbol wasn't guaranteed to be present on a given keyboard or even in the codepage. Using GT was out of necessity, no other reason, because letters were guaranteed to be on every keyboard and in every codepage.

    Later languages (such as C and BASIC) were criticized for their lack of portability, but eventually because of them, ASCII became a standard.

    The part where our Constitution applies to our citizens.

    If THEY wanted to share their own speech as American citizens on this issue, then that would be different. If they are just replaying foreigners' comments, then that's not their speech.

    Because professional businesses take everyone's contributions without tearing people down, but instead they build them up. This results in the best, most skilled workforce.

    But Linus has only volunteers and the only way to keep the inmates from overrunning the asylum is to act this way.

    Given Linus' experience, which I can assume none of us share, what if the nice way gets you 200 bad submissions a week but Linus' way gets you 2. You'd start doing it yourself to cut down all the nonsense check-ins.

  21. I think it's great. We had a really bad day on TWC once (service was up and down all day) and they didn't do anything except tell us they were aware and trying to fix it.

    My wife is also a mystery shopper that has cost many people their jobs at high-end restaurants, amusement parks, electronics stores, coffee shops, etc. The most common reason for being fired? Lying to the customer about stock availability (because they are too lazy and think that nobody will check) or about other policies or procedures they don't want to follow (returns, allergy situations at the restaurants, etc.).

    I got an HP Stream 7 for the same price (same specs) and it has a screen. It's nice to carry a portable 7" Windows 10 full desktop OS around with you sometimes.
