  1. Re:I know I know! on How Can Nerds Make a Difference In November? · · Score: 5, Informative

Okay. Please don't even joke about that. There was a really extreme campaign in Florida where Republicans discouraged blacks, Hispanics, and other traditionally Democratic voters from going to the polls by saying things like, "If you have any outstanding traffic tickets, pay them before voting," and, "bring proof of citizenship," (and this discouraged people who WERE legitimately citizens, because they didn't really understand and they were afraid of losing what they had worked so hard to gain), and, of course, "election day changed to Wedsnesday." Many people think that this was a big part of why the Democrats lost Florida. It's not funny, regardless of which side loses. More examples: http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A99749-2001May30?language=printer http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D05E5D6123FF935A2575BC0A9629C8B63 Not funny, not appropriate.

Muslims are not the enemy. It's unthinking people like yourselves who pose the greatest threat to the United States(whether they be Al-Qaeda or American citizens). Sorry about the OT post.

Because that's not the issue. You'll always have uncertainty in systems. The study argues that the public perceives these systems as infallible, and therefore believe that technology can provide a final, absolute arbitration. The study is commenting on this tendency in lay people (i.e., people without specialized knowledge of the system), and warns against the corollaries that stem from such assumptions. Also, the title is bad: they are merely looking at the issue through the lens of Hawk-Eye, they're not looking at Hawk-Eye specifically. You may note that there is no analysis of the hawk eye system beyond a basic discussion of its function.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't they making a huge pile of cash off of XBox Live? I thought the idea was to sell the console below cost, and make money off of games and services. So whether or not the hardware is making money isn't really news?

My high school had an annual budget $17 million, and they don't offer tech classes either. I asked why, and the explanation was as follows: It was a college prep school, and colleges prefer that students DO NOT take compsci classes because often times the information can be out dated. I took matters into my own hands. You get alot more out of learning by doing, and you often learn faster, and with greater depth and more knowledge of what is important. How do you learn Linux? Install it on your main computer and use it. How do you learn XYZ programming language? Come up with a project and do it (this leads to more projects, which leads to more understanding, which leads to more projects, etc.) Any question of the above sort? Do it.
