If I was concerned about privacy, I wouldn't be on the internet at all (I have little doubt that government agencies are capable of monitoring all internet traffic and are archiving it somewhere). I wouldn't even go outside (cos of CCTV), in fact my life would be pretty dull and boring.
If the government want my data, then they are going to find a way to get it no matter what lengths I go to to hide it. I might as well make it easier, so they can spend all the tax they get out of me on something more useful, like a decent health service. Anyway they are probably going to be more suspicious of me if I do go to lengths to hide data, than if I just happily follow the sheep.
I think you'll find if you're sitting in a rear seat, and the car stops suddenly, the poor soul in the front seat can get seriously injured when your body is thrown into the back of them.
A road safety advertising campaign in the UK showed this all too graphically.
There was almost a 3 hour gap between the latest two stories being published... what was ScuttleMonkey doing in that time? Surely he could have found a few minutes, perhaps whilst drinking his coffee, to actually read the front page of the website he's supposedly editing?!
I did actually try entering 'server' on the Ubuntu CD, but it ended up just booting Win98 from the hard-disk... obviously not an option on the LiveCD I was delivered. Either that or I misunderstood where and how I was meant to type 'server'.
To be fair, I did manage to end up installing DSL Linux, by re-partitioning, copying the contents of the CD image to the DOS partition and using loadlin. Something that should have taken an hour or two took the whole weekend, what with all the googling I had to do to find solutions. (Yes, there may have been quicker ways to do it, but unfortunately I didn't know them and had to rely on the first few pages of search engine results)
I wouldn't expect my parents to go through all that, no matter how security conscious they are. They are just going to continue using an unsupported Windows 98 on their 7 year old machine.
And how do you do that? I have a Win98 box with a CD drive that doesn't read CD-R/RW cd's. So I ordered the Ubuntu 6.06 live CD. Stuck it in. The next morning, 8 hours later, it was still trying to load Gnome. (I gave up)
It gave no option for a 'lite' install... in fact it gave no option for an install at all.
I looked in the Ubuntu forums but the only option was to download the server/alternate additions. Not very helpful when the destination PC can't read the CD you want to install it on! (The same applies to DamnSmallLinux... the PC doesn't boot from USB either).
Looks like I'm going to stick with an insecure and unsupported Win98 until Ubuntu find the sense to put a boot option on their live CD which those of us with old PC's can use!
Since I've spent the last couple of weeks failing to upload a 1.5mb pdf to my GooglePages account (despite the faq saying I should be able to upload anything up to 10mb, and having managed to upload 200k pictures without problems) I wouldn't consider it useful for personal file transfer. I'd stick to your gmail account for that.

From my experience, many ISP's embed your username somewhere in the URL to their free webspace offerings. Is this any different?
According to this page, spammers hadn't caught on to this the last time the page was updated.
I'm a little confused. I signed up to GooglePages in February when Slashdot first reported this story, and I've been happily been able to log in and edit my site ever since... I take it from this article that this hasn't been the case for everyone?
"Another important objective is a more competitive one - to help Microsoft build better products by deeply understanding Linux and open source."
Or to put it another way: Our business is built on stealing the best ideas from competitors and incorporating it into our software. Linux is full of good ideas, so makes it a good target!</cynical>
IMHO anyone relying on a Home Computer to make 911 calls is asking for trouble! You need guaranteed network connectivity, hope that your overnight virus software update didn't give you definition files that delete your skype software, that other application software on the machine isn't hogging the CPU for some unexpected reason.
Indeed, Windows Update may have decided that now was that opportune moment to reboot your machine!
Anyway, I don't think I'll say any more on the topic, my tinfoil hat may not be up to it!
I suspect it's more likely the employee who put the Cure CD in the computer in the first place to get into trouble! I would hope, especially following the Sony affair, that businesses with mission critical hardware would have policy's in place preventing employees from inserting music CD's in the computers, in the same way they shouldn't insert a floppy disk they've brought in from home or download dodgy software from the internet!
It's only fair that those with lots of free beer share it with those who have given away all their free beer. Keeping it to yourself just gives you a hangover, whilst sharing it makes for a great night out...
The number one feature I need for a calendar program is some form of telepathic link. I never have my on me when I need to make an appointment.
If the Lightning developers include this feature then I'll be a convert for sure!
Ack, I'd better give my contact in Nigeria a different email address. Wouldn't want the tax man to find out about all the money I'm about to receive for helping out the poor chap with his financial problems!
Well the article does say "Democrats support... health care for all American within five years". OK the word affordable is missed out. But then if you have Broadband access, those Nigerians with all that money will be able to get in touch and offer to help you with your bills!

Just a word of warning, don't look at the graphs. You'll not like them.

You can see how much we've moved on, just compare the original Duke Nukem with Duke Nukem Forever!
Oh wait...

Erm, not only do I forget to carry my organiser around, I forget to include it in my slashdot comments too.

If this is what they used to create 'loading...'^H^H^H^H live.com, then I might be giving it a miss... at least for now!

Do you think they'd encounter the wrong sort of snow in space?
