  1. Re:Syslog on DSS/HIPPA/SOX Unalterable Audit Logs? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Besides logging locally to disk, also add a line to /etc/syslog.conf to log to a remote machine.

If syslog can write to a remote machine, then a compromised syslog can overwrite a file on a remote machine. I suspect thats not even remotely close to enough read-only.

As others have suggested, print your logs on a line printer.

The copyright expiry should be calculated from the death of the artist, not the date of recording.

Oh yes, I couldn't agree with you more, ask any dead artist - the motivation to produce new works comes from the copyright powers they enjoy!

Purpose? Bacteria don't have a purpose they just do what they do. Besides, suppose a company finally succeded in creating a 3d printer capable of printing itself. Would that really make it suddenly unworthy of patent protection.

Replace purpose with "biological imperative" and your printer analogy breaks down.

That's why standard IP law shouldn't apply - who's the 'distributor' if something copies itself without human intervention?

Patenting / copyright / other methods to articifially control something being copied are STUPID when applied to an entity who's sole purpose is to make copies of itself.

Not to mention that assuming he's trying to argue against Windows, the argument blows up in his face when you count the number of CDs the average Linux distro ships on...

A linux distro with functional equivalence to Vista OOTB would have no Office Suite, no firewall tools, no web server, no CD/DVD burning/authoring software, no p2p clients, no sophisticated image editing programs, bugger all screensavers & games, minimal help documentation, etc, etc.

The typical linux distro is both an OS & a collection of Apps. What you say does not refute the OP in any way, shape or form.
