Isn't this mostly just swapping one form of addiction with another? Like the many people at AA who have started smoking/smoke more after trying to quit drinking.

Also, if you spend any amount of time on public chat channels in the average MMO, you will be well aware that one can easily combine addictions.

I can attest to that first hand: When I started my engineering program [only 1.5 semesters to go :)], I had never heard of imaginary numbers before. Granted, I was able to grasp the concept rather readily, but even am I shocked at the inability of some of my peers to perform basic algebra. I spent most of my first semester trying to explain, repeatedly, the distributive property to one fellow (who is still enrolled, and who still fails to grasp the concept).
Part of the problem, as seen from my view, is the complete and utter dependance on calculators, especially those fancy, programmable Texas Instruments ones, that can practically do the work for you. I have one (it was considered 'required course materials') that I have used maybe a handful of times, preferring my old two-line Casio scientific calculator, particularly now that I know what the little cursive 'i' does. :)

But since the official language in Quebec is french, there is no guarantee that you will find an english-speaker. When I was in Quebec earlier this year, I noticed that outside of Montreal, it was fairly difficult to find english speaking people working in any commercial or professional space. When I had to go to the hospital, the only one who spoke any english (or at least tried) was the nurse running the triage in Emergency. Fortunately, my stilted french was enough that I was able to understand what was being asked or told to me despite not being able to respond in kind.

Actually, that was my biggest suprise when I first started playing with linux about 9-10 years ago. The Win98 box I was tooling with needed to be restarted for some strange reason everytime I poked at the cat5. It just wouldn't renew an IP after being disconnected (at the time, there were two computers and no routers/switches). So I was extremly delighted to save myself that time and inconvenience everytime I wanted to play around.

Wikipedia, like any other encyclopedia is NOT a source in the 'write a paper' sense, it is a way to get a quick hint about any given topic before choosing how to best delve into the real research that is required. I always take five minutes to peruse a wikipedia article on a subject (if one exists) before starting research for a paper. It can give me an idea for an approach I hadn't considered or can help me rule out things that I might have wasted my time on otherwise. It can be a valueable tool when used properly, but it is not a referenceable source.

I wonder if it is possible to make some manner of three layer LED that could conduct in both directions and whether it would exhibit a noticable flickering. I wouldn't think it would be terribly difficult, since most LEDs are made by applying a thin p layer to an n substrate. Perhaps just flipping the substrate over and running it through the machine again, but then again, IANA electrical engineer (yet).

If you have an X server running, check it out with: xterm -bg blue4 -fg white&. I always have it aliased by default. I especially like this scheme when I have to look at code for hours at a time. My preference is 0xa5a5ff on an 0x4242e7 background for terminals (Ã la the c64) though the grey on blue scheme made famous by WP5.1 is good too. Both schemes provide adequate contrast without too much eyestrain and let you use many colours for highlights that are still easily readable on the blue background.

When forced to use green or amber monochromatic monitors, I find eyestrain is greatly reduced by keeping the brightness knob turned about halfway.
