If your account really did get drained, it is at the very least partially your fault for not using unique, strong passwords. How is ebay responsible for your lack of security planning??

Ever heard of PR? Slashdot is basically inexpensive negative PR, that does not even come close to doing damage to Microsoft. Basically created to make others feel bad about Microsoft. In order for this to work, of course the foundation has to do any genuine work. But what counts is the overall picture, which looks quite bad for Microsoft, if you believe everything you read on the internet.

SciFi to me usually means commentary on religious, political, or just plain social aspects. SciFi has always been a good way for authors to express dissent without having to address the actual subject literally, and avoid trouble with the authorities. Stories about "stuff that can't happen" I would consider in the Fantasy genre. And exercising your mind and imagination is hardly a "passive" activity. It is what will keep your brain from turning into mush as you grow older.

You must be mistaking Fox news for NPR. NPR is pretty liberal, and would never report that Iraq had WMD. NPR doesn't have commercials, so they don't need to worry about "offending" their main source of income, like many other commercial news sites do. Your point about the news causing mass hysteria may be valid, but NPR is hardly guilty of being "pro-war".

Whether or not it is prosecuted does NOT determine whether or not a crime took place. Same goes for copyright violations. Just because they don't come after you doesn't mean you didn't violate the copyright. But personally, I wouldn't be too worried if I violated and knew that nobody cared enough to come after me.

Would love to but Verizon has no plans for FIOS in my area in the near future. It's either Comcast, or a less than 5MB DSL connection for the same price. Some choice. At least my city is about to go WiFi city wide, and it looks like a 6MB connection will be about $15-20 a month cheaper than Comcast. I can't wait to get rid of Comcast entirely. I am read to give up my cable TV just to drop them from the equation. Lose a $110 a month bill and gain a $35 a month bill.
