The beautiful part about the OS community is that if MySQL was overtaken, or if the developers were, that the next group of coding gurus would come along and create something better.
Right now the motivation is not there because MySQL works so well.
That being said there is a few things to note here that are long term going to be.... "odd"
"an effort to sample feedback from customers who combine Microsoft and open-source software."
They just described a large chunk of OSDN (a LNUX asset), who are, however, rabidly loyal to OSDN and often very anti-MS, even the ones who use windows. If MS wants to avoid drawing a perpetual line in the sand, and quite frankly, having its open source ass kicked by a bunch of weekend OSDN hackers and geeks, then it will need to improve relations.
Now, improving relations can be as easy as letting off some pressure from the OS community, or just trying to make a full scale bridge alliance.
Trust me, right now if MS goes headstrong solo and stays that way you will end up with nothing but an MS network of broken ass open source.Net and asp projects that no one uses. Whereas the projects on OSDN already drive the web, literally.
"The software giant--and fierce Linux foe--runs a 300-server Linux installation at its Redmond, Wash., headquarters to do competitive analysis and test how open-source products, including Linux, work with Microsoft software."
Now this brings me to expansions for Windows Vista. To increase Linux usability years ago Wine was created, as was Windows. Could this be a clue that MS is doing the same reverse engineering to allow Linux aps and code to run on future microsoft operating systems?
Would mean, once again, OSDN (LNUX) growth and profit.
"However, the company has made efforts to make its software work better with open source. Hilf said Microsoft's product groups use the Linux labs to test how well upcoming Microsoft software, such as Windows Vista, will work with Linux and other open-source wares."
That just backed up that theory.
MS is still very against linux, and has been trying other things, such as the godaddy domain parking switch, to look better. However, this is showing a lack of momentum in the offensive fight and more of a mutually benificial move to a truce, which would increase the abilities of windows users to obtain OS solutions, and would increase the exposure of OS solutions to windows only users.
Remember geeks OSDN = LNUX != LINUX
Hope I turn out to be long term right about this one. I just wish I had a real job and could afford more.
Numerous US intelligence agencies have show their support for Freenet, stating that "Although we will not able able to track who does what, we admire this as a monument to free speech and freedom. Trust us, we have no back door way developed to monitor you, so just freely post your subversive plans, and feel safe doing so. Trust us."
Then again I used to work for the government, I know that they could program something like this, but it would be clunky, crash constantly, no one would use it, and only work running under ASAS-L or CHIMS, which is always the first thing to get deleted off the system by the local techs. (always loved that we would delete over half the cost of these overpriced computers the first day we got them).
Am I the only one who thinks these Web 2.0 guys are a bunch of whiney Emo like diet geeks?
When I started doing this geeks tended to be more subversive, have a cooler edge, and really innovate. These days it seems like these guys throw some crap out there, want a look over functional, honest to god function, love, and then whine saying the world is stupid and doesn't understand when no one picks up their project and loves them for it.
Some of my favorite programs were like my favorite car, clunky, held together with coat hangers and duct tape, but they wouldn't crash on you when you needed them, and if they did you could pop the hood yourself and using just a few tools take the entire thing apart and rebuild it.
Making things too complex for their own good is the same problem that both the automobile industry and the computer industry are going through. Patching layers and layers of "innovation" onto something eventually making it into a franken-beast, and one that trips over its own set of extra feet at that.
Small companies and partnerships will often work like this
1. A and B each own 50% of the company.
2. A and B each write up a contract that in the event of their death the other is authorized to buy out his 50% of the company at X rate with the proceeds going to the family
3. A and B each take out life insurance policies on eachother at X rate for that specific purpose
Then, if one partner dies the other files the insurance, buys the guys stake in the company, and the family gets the proceeds from the sale. Pretty standard in any small business where ownership is only divided a few ways.
Although the only thing that comes to mind is them trying a geek themed "Male Sex Appeal" theme to the site in order to attract females.
The very best it would do is attract good women who like geeks. In which case the slashdot users having sex stats will go up, and the content will subsequently go down.
This will then lead to the "Slashdot OMFG FREE DATING FOR U!!!11!!11!!" theme in order to bring in geeks who are not having constant hot sexual encounters.
..... wait a minute.... then we just get the original Slashdot crowd.... full circle.
Wasn't there a note about the new google crawler being able to possibly do this? Also, I hate the flash ads as much as the next guy, but I have also enjoyed countless hours at NewGrounds for years.
In 2000 they were around $250 per share..... and today

Until the test server is covered in l33t speak?
and the long delay is brought to you by /. flood control
Still stuck in 640 x 480 when I actually have to plug around on it directly.
You mean if quality and reliability continue to improve that you appeal will continue to grow???
Why didn't someone let me in on this secret a long time ago!

My post to the Yahoo Finance boards
.Net and asp projects that no one uses. Whereas the projects on OSDN already drive the web, literally.

Looking at this from an economical standpoint.
Yes.... it is probably a trap.
Okay guys, before you freak out learn what the difference between LNUX, and Linux is.
