Generally Chimpanzees are considered on par with the intellegence of a five year old child. Can you imagine having this discusion about the rights of a five year old child? Would anyone ever consider medical experiments reasonable on a five year old child? Yes they aren't human but genetically they are close. What if we do meet a more intellegent race? Is it okay to experiment on them and detain them simply because they aren't human? Certain rights should be expanded to include both less intellegent species as well as more intelllegent species. Whales, Dolphins and Great Apes should arguably have some basic rights as sentient beings.
Apparently most of the world wants to work here since large numbers apply for work and come here illegally. I've had a lot of friends who are English, Dutch, French, ETC. Most of them complain about the US and talk about how much better it is in their home country. Funny they still live and work here so it doesn't help their argument. It's hardly perfect but there must be some pluses since so many fight hard to get and stay here. I have an Australian friend that decided to go back. He stuck it out for 9 months and mostly stayed that long because it took him that long to earn the money to come back. He found he could earn nearly twice as much here for the same job and he had access to more things here. He still likes to boast of Australia but I haven't heard him talk about moving back since his trip back. It's not knocking other countries, I love Europe personally, it's like voting with your dollars in a sense. If it's so awful here why do you want to live here and a hell of a lot of people do want to live here.
Diebold takes the mystery out of elections. It might be a more efficent use of campaign funds to stop wasting the money on political ads and just use it to bribe Diebold.
Couldn't the system be reduced to a light comes on, human presses a key, human gets cookie? With enough lights and enough cookies you could get a human to do most any computer related task.
The reason is it's yet more proof it's a do nothing Congress. Even when they do something it has no positive effect. Business sees energy reform cutting into their short term bottom line and that's all most care about so don't expect Congress to get off their asses anytime soon. Alot of the changes will save money over time but it'll cut into their short term profits so they are seen as a bad thing. Any time you do anything some one isn't going to like it so Congress has taken the stance of simply doing nothing. They are big on committes and making statements but they rarely take proactive action on anything. We need leadership not smoke and mirrors. They would have accomplished far more by requiring a 5% or 10% increase in gas mileage. The car companies could easily meet those goals and it would save a huge amount of oil. Even that is seen as draconian in the Bush administration.
I think flash memory drives should have at least made the list. They really changed how a lot of people work. It's easy to transport files from office to home and back again. With such a large percentage of people working at least part time at home the drives make it much easier. I use them all the time to shift files from my desktop systems to my notebook. Also they credit Zip Drives but fail to list Syquest. That was really the landmark drive and they were more stable than Zip drives they just happen to be Mac based.
It seems to have more to do with people's attention spans than the quality of either film. Ask most young people what their favorite song is and they'll likely mention something current. Ask them again in five years and they may hate the same song, try to find a disco lover alive today. Serenity is fresh in people's minds and Star Wars is 30 years old. Both have devoted followings but it's hard to compare the two. Serenity made a small profit and Star Wars was one of the biggest films in history. If people were voting with their dollars there's no comparision. Ask people ten years from now and probably neither film would have the number one spot.
Neither one is much of a scifi film they are both fantasy films. It's not a value judgement I enjoyed both they just aren't really scifi films. 2001 and Bladerunner are scifi films. Neither of the films, Star Wars or Serenity, gave more than a passing thought to science. Star Wars had little to do with science and Joss Wedon seemed to keep confusing solar systems and galaxies. Both films were fantasy space operas. Really entertaining but in no way predicting a future that will or could ever happen. Star Trek has faired remarkably well as has 2001 but Star Wars is still fantasy. There's nothing wrong with space operas, they actually go back to the Buck Rodgers era, it's just they aren't science fiction. There's so little real science fiction people seem to be forgetting there's a difference.
Based on the need for macho mobiles maybe the better use for the money would be penis enlargement technology to take the pressure off cars. They desperately need an X Prize for penis enlargement! It could also help us end the war in Iraq. We just need a commercial of "our friend Bob" driving a tiny car with that stupid smile on his face and we could solve the energy problems and reduce global warming. The new status symbol could be tiny high efficency cars. Maybe it's as simple as using bumper stickers, "hybrid drivers are hung like horses". Or SUV stands for "Seriously Undersized shVatze".
"Ghettos" have been a fact of city life since preRoman days. In the US there used to be Irish Ghettos in New York. Most of London used to be a Ghetto. There's work and access to things in cities but for poorer people they aren't a healthy place to live. The real irony is apparently New York is the greenest city in the US when you look at the overall carbon footprint. Large buildings are more energy efficent and there are too many people to drive so they mostly use mass transit. It really puts into perspective how inefficent most of the world is. In the short term far more can be saved with increased efficency than replacing fossil fuels. The point is not to replace them but reduce the need then replace them. We can't produce enough biofuels to replace oil but if we cut the useage to a 1/4 of the current levels we can. Impossible? A hybrid with extra batteries gives better than a four fold increase. Some of the numbers I've heard are inexcess of 200 miles per gallon. The average person with normal driving could see a ten fold increase given that they would rarely visit a pump since they'd mostly be recharging at home. Yes that would increase electricity demands but adding even a modest number of solar cells to a roof would offset this. Every new house in the south west should have solar cells. The biggest savings are from compact florescents. If LED based bulbs could be made cheap enough it'd nearly eliminate the energy used by lighting. They use a few percent of the power of traditional light bulbs. How? They don't produce heat and that's where most of the energy goes not into creating light.
There are solutions. It just takes a little effort.
I take it they upped his medication since then. Either that or some one finally let him try upgrading an XP system to Vista, that could explain the buzz kill.
Actually that's the whole point. If it was an in demand upgrade the numbers would be higher. I have no plans to upgrade current machines and may pick up a copy or two of XP to avoid shifting to it as long as possible with newly built machines. OSX Leopard may show the difference. Personally I can't wait and plan to upgrade my Mac machine ASAP. A lot of Mac users will upgrade especially those with newer machines. I'm also waiting on that to do a dual boot with XP. Vista may be a next generation OS but it's hardly a hot upgrade. Given the massive development cost that has to be a serious disappointment. Mac upgrades are pretty seamless where as everyone other than Microsoft are not recommending upgrading XP they all recommend doing fresh installs. That's got to give everyone pause on upgrading XP machines. Love it or hate it Apple is doing it the right way.
We need to legalize the culling of lobbyist. If they can cull baby seals and alligators the culling of lobbyist is long overdue. Their explosive breeding is threatening the Washington political ecosystem. Tag and release is no longer a viable option. The overpopulation is similar to the Australian rabbit plagues only far more destructive.
I run pretty well on corn liquor so I'm sure cars will run fine. The hardest part is wasting it on the car. Might be a good way to get people to conserve. You got your choice drink it or run your car on it. Might force some people to ride bikes.
The really amazing thing is more people apparently are dying each year than are born. Do all the numbers and apparently humans will be extinct in three years. You'd think a story this big would at least make the tabloids?
It's impossible to compare the two. Out of the gate the screen size is nothing like the iPhone and the features and system don't compare. Smaller isn't always better. Remember the old calculators on pens? How many weeks did those last. It's another smart phone not an iPhone killer. Love it or hate it iPhone isn't like other phones on the market so they are tough to accurately compare. In another release or two the differences should get a lot more obvious.
